Boyce is newly described, and S. muluensis
M. Hotta is resurrected from within S.
calyptrata (Roxb.) Zoll. & Moritzi. Current
evidence does not support the presence of
Schismatoglottis calyptrata sens. strict. in Sarawak,
while occurrence on Borneo as a whole is questionable. A modified description of S. calyptrata, excluding characteristics of Bornean taxa hitherto included in synonymy is provided. An identification key to the
accepted species for Sarawak is provided,
and most are illustrated from living plants

Touching Wong Kar-wai's In the Mood for Love: Embodied Form, Haptic Visuality, and History-as-Surface
本文擬由觸感視覺的角度出發探討王家衛電影《花樣年華》特殊的表面美學和歷史觀,試圖開發出一種有別於後現代主義拼貼的表面閱讀。論文的第一部份「捕捉『表面形式』:電影影像、商品拜物、以及去體感化」試圖處理影像在商品化過程中成為一種「去體感化形式」(disembodied form)的弔詭,而分析的重點在於翻轉「去體感化」與「形式」之間必然相連的論理基礎。第二部份「觸視《花樣年華》:介面觸感視覺與表面歷史」則試圖以電影表面為介面,進一步思索在觸感視覺帶動下的《花樣年華》是如何中介了傳統敘事所無法企及的氣韻生動及歷史感。This article analyzes Hong Kong director Wong Kar-wai's film In the Mood for Love from the perspective of haptic visuality as a way to respond to critical readings of the film as a paradigm of postmodern pastiche. The first part of the article seeks to problematize the concept of filmic image as “disembodied form” by theorizing the possibility of filmic image as “embodied form.” The second part of the article discusses how the film successfully captures the sensibility of embodiment by means of an aesthetics of surface that escapes a notion of history that necessarily grounds itself on historical narratives
Thermal desorption of water ice in the interstellar medium
Water (H2O) ice is an important solid constituent of many astrophysical environments. To comprehend the role of such ices in the chemistry and evolution of dense molecular clouds and comets, it is necessary to understand the freeze-out, potential surface reactivity, and desorption mechanisms of such molecular systems. Consequently, there is a real need from within the astronomical modelling community for accurate empirical molecular data pertaining to these processes. Here we give the first results of a laboratory programme to provide such data. Measurements of the thermal desorption of H2O ice, under interstellar conditions, are presented. For ice deposited under condi- tions that realistically mimic those in a dense molecular cloud, the thermal desorption of thin films (50 molecular layers) is found to occur with zero order kinetics charac- terised by a surface binding energy, Edes, of 5773 ±60 K, and a pre-exponential factor, A, of 1030±2 molecules cm−2 s−1. These results imply that, in the dense interstellar medium, thermal desorption of H2O ice will occur at significantly higher temperatures than has previously been assumed
Steel structure in an open car park - The influence of trapped smoke on the fire resistance of steel beams
A car in an open car park is on fire. The fire and the smoke unleash a heat that causes the temperature to rise. The open car park is made out of a steel frame and to be designed for a fire resistance of 60 minutes. This car fire is a local fire whereas flashover doesn’t occur. The crucial point of the fire is when the steel frame reaches the critical temperature. If this occurs, the steel will fail and might lead to the collapse of the building. Because it is an open car park, it is assumed the natural ventilation will lead the smoke out of the building very fast. But the smoke can be trapped between the beams, which are present below the ceiling as a support structure for the floor system. The aim is to study whether the influence of trapped smoke between beams in an open car park is significant or not. And is it necessary to take the smoke into account during the design of an open car park when making use of the Bouwen met Staal guideline (BmS- guide), a guideline for the design of the fire safety of an open car park? In this study the influence of the smoke on the steel structure of the open car park was investigated by making use of a spreadsheet Car Park Fire (CaPaFi) and the software, Fire Dynamic Simulator (FDS). CaPaFi is a spreadsheet which calculates the steel temperatures without taking smoke into account. It is based on real car fire tests and the Eurocode. FDS is a program that uses computational fluid dynamic calculations to run a simulation (model) of a car fire in an open car park. It calculates the steel temperature of the steel beams taking the effect of smoke into account. All the information for FDS is written in a script beforehand and run afterwards. A single car fire and a 3 car fire were modeled and studied. To verify the calculations in FDS with CaPaFi, a single car fire model was put up. Because there were still some differences in the results, 4 more models were set up with small adjustments in the first one to fine tune the model (model 2 to 5). According to the study 95% of the car fires are limited to maximum 3 (fully) burnt cars. So, 3 car fires were also taken into account and the smoke. There were two cases with 3 car fires: one with beam sticking out (model 6 with obstacles) and one with beams hidden in the ceiling (model 7 without obstacles). Based on the results of this study, it is found that the smoke which is trapped between the beams can be neglected when making use of the BmS-guide to design the fire safety of an open car park for the steel beams with a height smaller than 500mm. Also a reasonable explanation could not be found of why the temperatures of the steel beams of FDS are lower than the ones calculated by CaPaFi. And in a 3 car fire model points that are further away from the car fire can be disregarded because their steel temperature calculated by FDS, even though higher than CaPaFi, will never reach the critical temperature. At last, it is still unclear why the increased number of soot doesn’t have any effect on the temperature of the steel beams in the single car fire model.Steel and Timber StructuresStructural EngineerCivil Engineering and Geoscience
Contributions of Clarence Y.C. Wong and Current Updates on the Flora of Romonum Island, Chuuk Lagoon, Federated States of Micronesia
Recent field work on Romonum (Ulalu) Island, a small volcanic island in Chuuk Lagoon, Federated States of Micronesia, found 45 new accounts of vascular plants. Fosberg, Sachet and Oliver’s (1979, 1982, 1987) geographical checklists listed only 30 species for the island, although in 1965, Stone (1967) found 124 species of vascular plants there. This study acknowledges the work of Clarence Y. C. Wong, who in 1947 collected 142 species of vascular plants and discusses the botanic history of Romonum Island. For unexplained reasons, his work has been largely ignored. Much remains to be discovered in defining the biotic diversity of the Pacific Islands. Finally, this study suggests that digital images may be a very appropriate tool for documenting the diversity of the islands
Convolutional neural network for object detection system for blind people
Blind or visually impaired people are usually unaware of the danger that they are facing in their daily life. They may face many challenges when performing their daily activity even in familiar environments. This work proposed a smart object detection system based on Convolutional Neural Network (CNN) to provide a smart and safe living for visually impaired people. To reduce the complexity load, region proposals from the edge maps of each image were produced using edge box algorithm. Then, the proposals passed through a fine-tuned CaffeNet model. The object scene was captured by the webcam in real time and the feature of the image was extracted. After that, audio-based detector was generated on the detected object to notify the visually impaired people about the identified object. The result was evaluated by using mean average precision (mAP) and frame-per-second and it was found that the Single Shot MultiBox Detector (SSD) reduces the complexity and achieves higher accuracy as well as faster speed in object detection compared to Fast R-CNN
Dickson charge pump rectifier using ultra-low power (ULP) diode for BAN applications
High power consumption and small battery size
severely limit the operating time of devices in Body Area
Network (BAN). Radio Frequency (RF) harvesting system can be
one of the ways to solve this constraint. Rectifier converts
ambient RF into direct current (DC). In a conventional rectifier
circuit, Schottky diodes have been considered as an attractive
candidate due to their low forward voltage drop and fast
switching speed. However, Schottky diodes are not properly
modelled in Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor
(CMOS) technologies which restrict their usefulness in low-cost
applications, where high integration levels are desired. Thus, an
efficient model of Schottky diode in an integrated circuit (IC)
domain is needed. For this reason, Ultra-Low Power (ULP) diode
has been proposed in the IC rectifier designs. The performance of
ULP diode was compared with diode-connected MOSFET based
on Dickson topology and Villard voltage multiplier in 130nm
Silterra process technology. The correlation of the design
parameters to the performance of voltage rectifier was analysed.
The results show that the efficiency of the voltage multiplier has
successfully increased more than double based on the
optimisation of the design parameters
