Gold coated carbon nanotube surfaces as low force electrical contacts for MEMS devices: part 1
An experimental investigation of a gold coated vertically aligned carbon nanotube surfaces is undertaken to determine the limits of the electrical contact performance over a large number of switching cycles under low force conditions and with current loading (1mA-50mA at 4V). The multi-walled CNT’s (MWCNT’s) are synthesized on a silicon planar and sputter coated with a gold film. The planar surfaces are mounted on the tip of a PZT actuator and mated with a coated Au hemispherical probe. The electrical load is selected to reflect typical MEMs relay loads with a 4V supply, 1 and 10mA current load with an applied force of 1mN. The surfaces tested maintain a stable contact resistance over 106 switching cycles. To determine the limits, the contact force is increased to 3mN under dry circuit conditions and the current increased at the 1mN load to 20mA-50mA. The surfaces are compared with a reference Au-Au contact under the same experimental conditions. For the surfaces investigated the current loading limit was determined to be 20mA where the contacts failed after 50x106 cycles

Direct numerical simulation of the flow around a wing section at moderate Reynolds numbers
A three dimensional direct numerical simulation has been performed to study the flow around the asymmetric NACA-4412 wing at a moderate chord Reynolds number (Rec = 400, 000) with an angle of attack of 5◦ . The flow case under investigation poses numerous challenges for a numerical method due to the wide range of scales and complicated flow physics induced by the geometry. The mesh is optimized and well resolved to account for such varying scales in the flow. An unsteady volume force is used to trip the flow to turbulence on both sides of the wing at 10% chord. Full turbulent statistics are computed on the fly to further investigate the complicated flow features around the wing. The present simulation shows the potential of high-order methods in simulating complex external flows at moderately high Reynolds numbers
Universal adaptive control of satellite formation flying
In this paper, a new universal adaptive control scheme for satellite formation flying is developed. The underline idea of our design is to combine the domination design and the monotone adaptive gain. This scheme is guaranteed to have the properties of position tracking and full adaptivity against all parameters. Simulation studies are given which establish that implementation of this scheme would not require unachievable actuator signals
