Architecturally, axis is a reasoned attempt to connect spaces of monumental value, including memorials, political offices and religious buildings. Through my theoretical research based on various literature and case studies, including that of Baroque Rome and Paris, it is evident that axes bear certain characteristics and influences especially in shaping perspective and facilitating movement. It appears that pertaining to visual perspective, axes bear influence in one or more of the following ways: 1) Centrifugal perspective, 2) Contained perspective, and 3) Centripetal perspective. Importantly, it shapes the ways a city is viewed and symbolically perceived, and is an important architectural tool for the planning of a city. Upon closer inspection of the topic, the study of the perspective in the axis presents and interface with the field of scenography. The research into the theory, phenomenon, and historical understanding of the perspective will bring about new information in the project. In the city of Tashkent, Uzbekistan, the invasion of the Tsarist government resulted in the intrusion of Western ideologies into a predominantly Asian city. One of the prominent interventions was the presence of clear axis. However, through fieldwork and in observing the urban fabric of Tashkent, it appears that the axes largely deviate from how axes commonly are like in previous case studies. While other case studies reflect the ways axis shape perspective as mentioned above, many axes in Tashkent do not bear such characteristics. As such, this graduation project draws on the observations and study of such deviations to derive learning opportunities and apply it to a new architecture. The intended outcome is a design of a monumental architecture that has a regional impact for Tashkent and its position on the New Silk Road.Architecture, Urbanism and Building Science

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Is sentence processing really automatic?
There are abundant journal articles written on Stroop effect for words. This study aims to find out 1) whether similar effects can be replicated in sentences and 2) if sentence processing has occurred during Stroop task. Thirty participants took part in two Stroop paradigm experiments. In Experiment 1, sentences were split into 3 conditions – CONTROL, CONGRUENT and INCONGRUENT. Out of these 3 conditions, only the CONTROL condition did not consist of any colour word, CONGRUENT trials were coloured in the colour word that appears in the sentence and INCONGRUENT trials were coloured differently from the colour word in the sentence. Results suggest that such effect can also be observed in sentences. For Experiment 2, only congruent trials were used. Two conditions – COLOUR CONTEXT and NON-COLOUR CONTEXT – were set up for Experiment 2. In the COLOUR CONTEXT condition, the colour word in the sentence refers to the concept of colour (eg. a blue ball). In the NON-COLOUR CONTEXT condition, the colour word in the sentence does not refer to the concept of colour (eg. out of the blue). There was no conclusive evidence suggesting that sentence processing has indeed occurred as the results were not significant. However, results were very close to significance. This may be indicative that the sentence processing did occur.Bachelor of Art
On language attrition : lexical access in Singaporean English-Chinese bilinguals
Language attrition has been shown to affect language processing skills of migrants,
particularly lexical access. However, there has yet been a consensus as to whether lexical access during reception and production are affected to the same extent. Further, past studies primarily involved migrants who simultaneously experience the loss of their native language and acquisition of a new language, which presents difficulty in disentangling the effects of language attrition and language acquisition on the decline of language skills. This study investigated lexical access of early English-Chinese bilinguals during reception and production of Chinese words through a lexical decision task (LDT) and picture naming task (PNT). Quantitative results showed that speed of lexical access during Chinese word reading
in the LDT is affected by language disuse, while qualitative analysis of erroneous responses made in the PNT suggested difficulties in lexical access during production. This indicates that lexical access during reception and, less definitively, production is affected by language attrition. The results also established grounds for attributing at least part of the language processing difficulties in migrants to language attrition, since lexical access difficulties were found in the early bilinguals whose language disuse did not coincide with the acquisition of a new language.Bachelor of Art
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
