    No full text
This study focuses on the effect of shopping center layout design on shoppers' behaviour. The objectives of this project is to study on the detailed layout of shopping center, interiorly and exteriorly, to identify general information concerning shoppers behaviour whereby it can be interrelated to how do the layout affecting shoppers behaviour, and finally to observe and study about the shopping center layout design and to make sure how does it affect on local shoppers behaviour. Sources of the data and information are gathered by the author from literature review of previous researches, published articles and books, and supported by the opinions of shoppers through structured questionnaires. From the survey, analysis and findings, the author noted that majority shoppers are satisfied on both interior and exterior layout of the case study. Attractive shopping environment, appealing exterior features, effortless in finding the entrance, sufficient car parks, these are some of the reason that make shoppers happy with the shopping complex. It is hoped that this project could clearly explain the interior and exterior layout of a shopping complex that affect the shoppers' behaviour and given better understanding to other readers about detailed shopping center layout design

Cultural Imagination of the Other: Chinese American Women in Hollywood Cinema

    No full text
This PhD thesis examines the representation and inclusion of Chinese American women in Hollywood cinema and beyond, focusing on the lives and careers of Anna May Wong, Nancy Kwan, and Lucy Liu. These stars symbolize significant transitional periods in American history, each confronting dominant discourses that both regulated their presence and provided space for resistance, allowing them to claim their agency and assert their subjectivity. Anna May Wong (1905-1961) achieved stardom in the early twentieth century, a time overshadowed by the Yellow Peril discourse. Nancy Kwan (1939- ) became a key figure in the mid-twentieth century, embodying the Model Minority stereotype. Meanwhile, Lucy Liu (1968- ) represents the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries, marked by Post-racial and Post-feminist ideologies. By adopting an intersectional approach, this thesis explores how the on-screen portrayals and off-screen identities of these stars were shaped and negotiated within their respective eras. It reveals that, while Wong, Kwan, and Liu achieved significant success, their Americanness was often scrutinized due to their racial and ethnic backgrounds. Through reflection on three transitional periods and a textual analysis of films and interviews, the research examines how these women engaged with their on-screen portrayals, their star images, and their own identities. It traces their journey from being passive figures subjected to systemic biases to becoming subjects-in-awakening who actively exercised their agency within the constraints of the system. By providing an in-depth exploration of the personal challenges and cinematic portrayals of these stars, the thesis depicts the broader narrative and struggles of Chinese American women in American cinema and society. These portrayals not only speak to the star images of Wong, Kwan, and Liu but also reflect how Chinese Americans, especially Chinese American women, have been perceived throughout American history. Furthermore, these stars, as individuals, represent how Chinese American women faced both opportunities and constraints in their respective eras

    Some of Their Parts

    No full text
SOME OF THEIR PARTS is a YA coming-of-age / supernatural investigation novel about competitive academics and the stress of the American college application system. The full text will be about 60,000 words. For as long as she can remember, Vivi has been preparing for college. She studies. She volunteers. She finds tasteful extracurriculars. She knows what’s expected of her, but she’s never really felt it—until, in her junior year, her mother’s new professorship means Vivi gets sent off to a boarding school in southern Vermont. A school that mixes its human students with amalgams. Amalgams are people, same as Vivi—only instead of being born, they’ve been sewn together from carefully-chosen corpses and copper thread: children hand-crafted by their parents. When Vivi stumbles across a group of them practicing for an academic competition called scholars’ bowl, she finds herself tumbling into a world of deep rivalries, unsettling teenage swagger, and (perhaps, begrudgingly) the best friends she’s ever had. But Southridge Academy’s sco-bo team has seen better days. Their star player has vanished, and his disappearance has scattered the team’s veterans to the wind. One of the few who’s left seems to be haunting Vivi’s footsteps—delivering cryptic warnings before her practices and skulking about the campus at night. And someone in her dormitory seems to want Vivi gone, too, if the overtuned heater and constant rearrangements of her fridge magnets are any indication. If Vivi wants to get to the bottom of this, she needs time—and support. But the pressure is on for her to perform, she’s growing increasingly concerned that the one teammate she’s actually friends with is nursing an unwanted crush, and—most worryingly—every hour she’s thinking about ghosts and missing persons is an hour she isn’t preparing her college applications. SOME OF THEIR PARTS is a story about friendship, competition, and the stifled anguish of being a seventeen-year-old who wants to change the world. It may appeal to readers who enjoyed the investigative team dynamics of Trenton Lee Stewart’s The Mysterious Benedict Society or the quiet desperation of aspirational otherness in Charles Yu’s Interior Chinatown

Effects of Immigration on Chinese Canadian Identity and Mental Health

    No full text
The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between immigration, the ethnic identities of Chinese immigrants to Canada and the development of ethnic identity and mental health. The participant sample consisted of 87 participants, 39 males and 48 females. Participants were asked to complete the Multigroup-Ethnic Identity Measure and the Rosenberg self-esteem measure examining the participant‘s ethnic identity and self-esteem. The results found that there was no statistically significant relationship between participant‘s reported feelings of connection to their ethnicity and levels of self-esteem. These results suggest that although past research has indicated that many studies believe a relationship exists between ethnic identity and self-esteem, individual mental wellness is multi-dimensional and ethnic identity may not be the most influential factor. The findings may be used to create a better understanding of how Chinese Canadians mental health is influenced by immigration in order to create a better supportive environment for future immigrants in Canada

Analysis of the uses of 3D printing in NDT procedures

    No full text
In the manufacturing world, non-destructive testing (NDT) play a crucial role in ensuring quality and the integrity of the products. However, a great deal of money, effort and time is put into the manufacture and research of NDT tools. Precision machining and time-consuming production methods result in costly production of these tools. New methods of production are constantly developed, seeking to reduce the required cost and time. A possible alternative may come in the form of additive manufacturing (AM). Various industries are already incorporating these methods for production. High precision, low wastage of material and rapid production are only few of the benefits that AM provides. Therefore, in this study, we explore the possibilities with using additive manufacturing methods to reproduce fundamental inspection probes and defected specimens commonly used for NDT purposes.Bachelor of Engineering (Mechanical Engineering
