    No full text
The seventh edition of The Evolution of Economic Thought presents the history of economics and the philosophies that drive the economic way of thinking. It stresses the importance of understanding contemporary economics by grasping new ideas, evidence, problems and values that call for reconsideration of basic disputes and major contributions of the past. The textbook explains the ideas of the great economic thinkers and their logical connections to the world of today and tomorrow. Updated pedagogical features provide clear insight into issues like antitrust perspectives and game theory. Introducing ideas like Robert Solow\u27s pioneering model to discuss recent renewed emphasis on growth theory and technological change, the author sheds historical light on modern debates and thoughts. Stanley Brue and Randy Grant carry on the legacy of Jacob Oser, the book\u27s creator, by offering a scholarly and timely presentation of the history of economic thought.https://digitalcommons.linfield.edu/linfauth/1020/thumbnail.jp

Influence of radiographic techniques on the measurement of femoral anteversion angles and a conformation score of pelvic limbs in L abrador retrievers

    No full text
Objective To determine repeatability of and correlation between 2 radiographic measurements of femoral anteversion angles (FAA) and to determine their influence on a score derived from tibial plateau angle (TPA) and FAA to predict the risk of cranial cruciate ligament disease (CCLD). Study Design Prospective clinical study. Animals Forty-eight Labrador retrievers with or without CCLD. Methods FAA and CCLD scores were calculated for each limb from extended pelvic radiographs (t-FAA) or angled (a-FAA) projections of the femur by 3 investigators. One investigator repeated measurements twice. Data were analyzed for repeatability, correlation between t-FAA and a-FAA, and their influence on CCLD scores. Results FAA correlated most strongly with the distance between the femoral head and the femoral axis on mediolateral radiographs, a measurement with excellent repeatability. t-FAA and a-FAA correlated with each other (r > 0.79, P < .0001), although t-FAA were about 1° greater than a-FAA (P = .01). Intrainvestigator and interinvestigator repeatability of the CCLD score was fair when derived from t-FAA and good to excellent when derived from a-FAA. CCLD scores differed between radiographic techniques but led to different predictions in only 9 (10%) limbs, all with lower TPA and CCLD scores than the rest of the population. Conclusion a-FAA correlated strongly with t-FAA and improved the repeatability of CCLD scores within and between investigators. Clinical significance A craniocaudal angled beam projection of the femur is a suitable alternative to a ventrodorsal pelvic radiograph when measuring FAA and may improve the repeatability and positive predictive value of CCLD scores

The invisible artist: Arrangers in popular music (1950-2000): Their contribution and techniques

    No full text
This thesis was submitted for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy and was awarded by Brunel University. This thesis is based on the research conducted by the author for the series, Richard Niles' History of Pop Arranging, seven thirty-minute documentary programmes for BBC Radio 2, researched, written and presented by the author and broadcast in 2003. It also draws on interviews conducted by the author (and other research) between 2002 and 2007 both for the radio series and for this thesis and on the author's experience as a professional arranger in popular music working with many of the genre's significant recording artists including Paul McCartney, Ray Charles, Cher, Tina Turner, Westlife, Tears For Fears, Dusty Springfield, James Brown, Pet Shop Boys, Kylie Minogue and producers including Trevor Hom, Steve Lipson, Steve Mac and Steve Anderson. It will be argued that the role of the arranger in popular music has often been undervalued and that during a critical period of popular music history (1950-2000) arrangers played a significant part in the evolution of musical content. This thesis is, to the best of the author's knowledge, the first time (apart from the above mentioned documentary) the subject has ever been examined. The arranger is "invisible" because musical arrangers are often un-credited on record liner notes or in books or articles concerning popular music. A considerable amount of research has been necessary to determine who wrote many of the arrangements considered herein. Motown's Berry Gordy purposely kept the names of musicians and arrangers off the records because he feared others might 'poach' the trademark 'Motown Sound'. Other record labels considered the job of the arranger to be reminiscent of an earlier era, diluting the Rock 'n' Roll image of emotion and spontanaeity they wished to promote. Some producers and recording artists disliked sharing credit for their work. Motown arranger David Van dePitte told the author that arranging was "thankless and anonymous - a very service-oriented profession where others often take credit for what you've done." Arranging has therefore remained an intrinsically unseen art created by 'invisible' artists. By analyzing many recordings, revealing the techniques and concepts they have used in their work to create popular records, arrangers and their art will be made more 'visible'

Journal Articles Authored by Forensic Pathologists Board Certified during the Years 1985-2010

    No full text
Using a list provided by the American Board of Pathology, the names of all board certified forensic pathologists (BCFPs) were entered into an electronic database, along with the year in which each was certified. The names of BCFPs were searched in PubMed/Medline against authors of journal articles. We limited study to 836 BCFPs who were certified in the years 1985 through 2010. We documented that at least 33% of BCFPs had been published authors, and that up to 66% could have been published authors. The total number of articles found and verified by authors was 2128. The average number of articles was 7.7 per published BCFP. Eleven journals accounted for 52% of the articles, and the remaining 48% of articles were published in 415 other journals of diverse subject scope. BCFPs were the lead author or solo author on 986 (45%) of the articles. The majority of articles were case reports. Two hundred and sixty-one articles (12%) included a categorization of “Research Support” which means that at least one author was supported with funds from the National Institutes of Health (NIH) or other government sources such as the Public Health Service. For this group of 261 articles with research support, a BCFP was the lead author, last author, or solo author on 80 (31%) of them. Using extrapolations based on our data, we estimate that BCFPs since 1959 have collectively published as many as 164 journal articles per year and possibly more than 8000 articles over the past 50 years. </jats:p
