John T. Witte Interview
John (Jack) Turner Witte was born on April 1, 1924, in Toledo, Ohio. He was a graduate of Scott High School. His attendance at Dartmouth College was interrupted by his enrollment in Naval officer training; he served during World War ll in the Pacific, and also the Korean War. His grandfather began the Moreton Storage Company in 1878, and Jack eventually bought the business. His interview includes a brief family history. He was preceded in death by his wife Ann, and died in Toledo on February 14, 2014

Electron-hole plasma expansion in GaAs: Submicron optical time of flight investigations
Pump and probe differential reflection (Delta R) and transmission (Delta T) measurement of subpicosecond light pulses for either co- and counterpropagating pump and probe geometries are performed on thin GaAs samples. With this time of flight (TOF) method we study density dependent electron-hole plasma (EHP) expansion in GaAs perpendicular to the sample surface in the temperature range of 300 K greater than or equal to T-L greater than or equal to 4 K. At a fluence of F = 800 mu Jcm(-2) the expansion velocities increase with decreasing lattice temperature T-L. The expansion velocities v at T-L = 300 K and 4 K show a dependence on the delay time tau like v proportional to tau(-2/3). At low lattice temperatures we find a much stronger dependence of the expansion velocities on the fluence of the pump pulses
Stata do-file for the paper informal legacy and exporting among Sub-Saharan African firms
Stata do-file for the paper informal legacy and exporting among Sub-Saharan African firms. Published in Organization Science (2022).
Abstract paper
Around the world and especially in areas of widespread poverty, firms start their operations without registering with relevant authorities (i.e., in the informal economy). We explore whether firms that initiated their operations in the informal economy but later register have a higher propensity to export than firms that register at the time of their foundation. We reason that the experience of having operated informally provides formally registered firms with the advantage of low-cost and flexible exploration but also a domestic legitimacy liability. We suggest that these factors likely contribute to making foreign export markets more attractive after registration. Based on a comprehensive sample of Sub-Saharan African firms, we find that conditional on registration, firms with an informal legacy have a higher propensity to initiate exporting than firms that started their operations formally. We contribute with theoretical and policy-oriented insights on the dynamics of informality and exporting.
This stata do-file lists all commands that have been executed in the data management and analysis process. The main data source is the World Bank Enterprise Survey. World Bank Enterprise Survey Data is available through the World Bank for researchers after registration.

Distinct roles of T-cell lymphopenia and the microbial flora for gastrointestinal and CNS autoimmunity
T-cell lymphopenia is a major risk factor for autoimmunity. Here we describe congenic Lewis (LEW) rats with a loss-of-function mutation in the Gimap5 gene, leading to a 92% reduction in peripheral T-cell numbers. Gimap5-deficient LEW rats developed eosinophilic autoimmune gastroenteritis accompanied by a 40-fold increase in IgE serum levels. This phenotype was ameliorated by antibiotic treatment, indicating a critical role of the microbial flora in the development of inflammatory bowel disease. Interestingly, Gimap5-deficient LEW rats showed strongly aggravated experimental autoimmune encephalomyelitis (EAE) after immunization with guinea pig myelin basic protein. This phenotype, however, persisted after antibiosis, confirming that the enhanced CNS autoimmune response in T-cell lymphopenic Gimap5-deficient LEW rats was unrelated to the composition of the microbial flora. Rather, it seems that it was caused by the 7-fold increase in the percentage of activated T cells producing IL-17 and IFN-gamma, and the skewed T-cell receptor (TCR) repertoire, both of which were the result of T-cell lymphopenia and not affected by antibiosis. This notion was supported by the observation that adoptive T-cell transfer corrected the TCR repertoire and improved EAE. Collectively, our findings confirm a critical albeit differential role of T-cell lymphopenia in the susceptibility to organ-specific autoimmune responses.-Fischer, H.J., Witte, A.-K., Walter, L., Grone, H.-J., van den Brandt, J., Reichardt, H.M. Themaboek witte klaver in grasland
