    Two-variable Logic with Counting and a Linear Order

    We study the finite satisfiability problem for the two-variable fragment of the first-order logic extended with counting quantifiers (C2) and interpreted over linearly ordered structures. We show that the problem is undecidable in the case of two linear orders (in presence of two other binary symbols). In the case of one linear order it is NEXPTIME-complete, even in presence of the successor relation. Surprisingly, the complexity of the problem explodes when we add one binary symbol more: C2 with one linear order and its successor, in presence of other binary predicate symbols, is decidable, but it is as expressive (and as complex) as Vector Addition Systems

    Modulo Counting on Words and Trees

    We consider the satisfiability problem for the two-variable fragment of the first-order logic extended with modulo counting quantifiers and interpreted over finite words or trees. We prove a small-model property of this logic, which gives a technique for deciding the satisfiability problem. In the case of words this gives a new proof of EXPSPACE upper bound, and in the case of trees it gives a 2EXPTIME algorithm. This algorithm is optimal: we prove a matching lower bound by a generic reduction from alternating Turing machines working in exponential space; the reduction involves a development of a new version of tiling games

    Deriving an Abstract Machine for Strong Call by Need

    Strong call by need is a reduction strategy for computing strong normal forms in the lambda calculus, where terms are fully normalized inside the bodies of lambda abstractions and open terms are allowed. As typical for a call-by-need strategy, the arguments of a function call are evaluated at most once, only when they are needed. This strategy has been introduced recently by Balabonski et al., who proved it complete with respect to full beta-reduction and conservative over weak call by need. We show a novel reduction semantics and the first abstract machine for the strong call-by-need strategy. The reduction semantics incorporates syntactic distinction between strict and non-strict let constructs and is geared towards an efficient implementation. It has been defined within the framework of generalized refocusing, i.e., a generic method that allows to go from a reduction semantics instrumented with context kinds to the corresponding abstract machine; the machine is thus correct by construction. The format of the semantics that we use makes it explicit that strong call by need is an example of a hybrid strategy with an infinite number of substrategies

    Set constraints are relations between sets of ground terms over a given alphabet. They give a natural formalism for many problems in program analysis, type inference, order-sorted unification, constraint logic programming. In this paper we start studies of set constraints in the environment given by equational specifications. We show that in case of associativity (i.e., in free monoids) as well as in case of associativity and commutativity (i.e., in commutative monoids) the problem of consistency of systems of set constraints is undecidable; in linear nonerasing shallow theories the consistency of systems of positive set constraints is NEXPTIME-complete and in linear shallow theories the problem for positive and negative set constraints is decidable

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Generalized Refocusing: From Hybrid Strategies to Abstract Machines

    We present a generalization of the refocusing procedure that provides a generic method for deriving an abstract machine from a specification of a reduction semantics satisfying simple initial conditions. The proposed generalization is applicable to a class of reduction semantics encoding hybrid strategies as well as uniform strategies handled by the original refocusing method. The resulting machine is proved to correctly trace (i.e., bisimulate in smaller steps) the input reduction semantics. The procedure and the correctness proofs have been formalized in the Coq proof assistant

    “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
