The article deals with the poetic reception of six woodcuts made by Hans Brosamer for Petrarch’s Triumphs which were at the disposal of the printer Maciej Wirzbięta. Mikołaj Rej wrote a cycle of epigrams devoted to them that was included in the second edition of Źwierzyniec of 1574. In his epigrams, he made use of the scenes depicted in the woodcuts to formulate general moral advice. One of the engravings of the series, displaying the Triumph of Fame, was the subject of epigrams also by Maciej Stryjkowski (1574) and Stanisław Witkowski (1609). Both authors presented a successful interpretation of the engraving and its individual elements. The same graphic inspiration makes it possible for us to compare the sensitivity and technique of three Old-Polish poets. Obaj autorzy przedstawili udaną interpretację ryciny i jej poszczególnych elementów. Wspólna graficzna inspiracja pozwala porównać wrażliwość i warsztat trzech staropolskich poetów

Uterine glands agenesia in the mare

All mammalian uteri contain endometrial glands that synthesize and secrete a substance termed histotroph, which is essential for early pregnancy nutrition. Because of that function, endometrial glands play a crucial role as regulators of survival and development of conceptus. In all mammalian females as well as in woman, endometrial glands undergo extensive hyperplasia and hypertrophy during pregnancy as a response to increasing demands of the developing conceptus for uterine histotroph. The process of endometrial glands development is called adenogenesis. Inhibition of the development of these glands through gene mutation or epigenetic strategies results in infertility. Two cases of total intrauterine glands developmental agenesis are presented, which were diagnosed on the base of histopathological examination of endometrial biopsy specimens. Despite the fact that endometrial glands agenesis in mare is a rare condition, it is worth while to emphasize that the endometrial biopsy is currently the best diagnostic tool to recognize the above developmental disturbance. Clinicians should be aware, that the mare with normal reproductive organs during macroscopic clinical investigation, can present with uterine glands agenesis

Before You Bring a Pogrom: Between the Experience of Ethnographic Fieldwork in Roma Communities and Anthropological Scientific Text

This article is based on the long-term ethnographic field research (2011-2016) among Bergitka Roma in Carpathian Villages, an engaged ethnography in a non-profit organization offering Roma integration services and in-depth interviews with main political actors responsible for the adaptation of Polish strategy of Roma integration. The difficulties of introducing Roma integration are essential for understanding the state of the current policy supporting Roma communities. A considerable number of scientific publications in recent years focus on the “pragmatic” dilemmas of new ways of developing cultural “democratic” change within the Roma communities and improving the quality of Roma/ non-Roma ties. The meaning of the activities referred to here, as “Roma’s integration” is different for particular actors, possessing diverse intentions, experience, interests and ideas about the rationality of this type of activity. The author argue that the anthropologists should be ready to challenge the general sense of practices of helping as a product of concrete social epistemology. However, in ethnographic practices it sometimes may seems difficult from the moral point of view. In the following he uses the distinction between the concepts of “thick” and “thin” moral convictions which was proposed by Kwame A. Appiah in his conception of “cosmopolitan ethics”

Lucent Cracks of Heavens: Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski, Stars and an “Etrurian Poet” The paper tries to display the links between a catalogue of metaphors contained in Maciej Kazimierz Sarbiewski’s handbook entitled Characteres lyrici, seu Horatius et Pindarus and Giambattista Marino’s Canzone delle stelle. Based upon his college lectures (Połock 1626/1627), Sarbiewski’s work offers practical rules for the composition of lyrical poetry and some theoretical considerations. Among many “ornaments related to the lyrical invention”, a very important stylistic device mentioned by the Jesuit poet and theorist is a “definition by accumulation”(definitio conglobata), that is, a series of extended metaphors or other figurative expressions, for example periphrasis, metonymy or allegory. This rhetorical strategy serves as a useful instrument in reintegrating the art of invention with amplification aimed particularly at the accumulation of different words or figures. As the “ornament of the lyric invention”, the definition described by the author appears no to be restricted only to effective searching for ideas and concepts; it is also a valuable tool for achieving unusual power of expression and for exercising composition and style. Sarbiewski quotes an example concerning the stars, taken, as he says, from „a contemporary Etrurian poet”. In his commentary to the edition of Characteres lyrici, Stanisław Skimina identified this poet as Dante, which was subsequently taken for granted by many scholars. Recently, the poet in question has been proved to be Giambattista Marino, famous for his style characterized by many extravagant conceits, excessive figures, and other complicated rhetorical patterns. The authors analyze Sarbiewski’s catalogue in the context of Canzone delle stelle, dealing with the way the Polish poet understands and changes the original. While translating Marino’s poem into Latin and listing metaphorical “definitions”of stars, he retained freedom of creative interpretation. For this reason, in his catalogue one may find far-reaching textual changes, for example misreading of words, omission of some figures or simplification of meanings.</jats:p

Author of "Truth of analytic statements in a radically empiricist theory of meaning" answers to a critical essay written by Maciej Witek. He clarifies the metaphysical assumptions and implications of proposed conception, dealing with such issues as: sense/reference distinction; methodological versus realistic approach to theory of meaning; inferential/causal relations among meaningful items; mental aspect of meanings. Next, he makes explicit a view on the concept of truth to which this theory is committed. In addition, he formulates ways of sociolinguistic operationalization of concepts of 'platitude' and 'meaning'
