A flap that has a philosophy and requires courage to do: Abbe flap
The Abbe flap is a valuable reconstructive option for secondary deformities of the upper lip following cleft lip repair. In this report, the author present four cases successfully treated with the Abbe flap, demonstrating its reliability and aesthetic outcomes. Each procedure was performed under local anesthesia, utilizing a flap based on the left labial artery. The technique proved effective in addressing whistling deformity, philtrum loss, and upper lip retraction. Even surgeons without prior experience in this flap can achieve functional and cosmetic success when the indication is correct. Despite the limited number of cases, our experience supports the use of the Abbe flap in selected patients, reinforcing its value in modern reconstructive surgery

Oriental enlightenment: the problematic military experiences and cultural claims of Count Maurice Auguste comte de Benyowsky in Formosa during 1771
Maurice Benyowsky's colourful version of his global adventures during the heady, expansive days of the late-Enlightenment remains still as an historical account, and is perhaps destined for reification at a time of romantic, postmodernist cultural affirmation. Yet this paper argues that within it there lies a virile and possibly dangerous Orientalism, one at least partially based upon a lurid, opportunistic and self-seeking fabrication of his visit to Taiwan (Formosa) in the year 1771. This paper examines the veracity, provenance and historiography of the Benyowsky account of late-eighteenth century Formosa, both as an exercise in one facet of Taiwanese history and as some exploration of the origin and maintenance of European views of the "other" and of the "orient" as they were transforming during the late-Enlightenment period. Furthermore a principal task is to provide an historiographical analysis that illustrates both the initial reasons for the acceptance of Benyowsky's lurid account as well as the wider contexts of its long life as a seemingly reliable and authentic tale. Questions remain as to the cultural contexts of any general acceptance of otherwise doubtful stories, experiments, claims and "adventures". Here there is little doubt that the original Memoirs were given greater credence by Benyowsky's talent in self-fashioning his character and status as those of a reliable gentleman
Heat recovery and thermal storage : a study of the Massachusetts State Transportation Building
Thesis (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Architecture; and, (M.S.)--Massachusetts Institute of Technology, Dept. of Mechanical Engineering, 1986.Typescript (photocopy).Includes bibliographical references (v. 2, leaves 288-292)A study of the energy system at the Massachusetts State Transportation Building was conducted. This innovative energy system utilizes internal-source heat pumps and a water thermal storage system to provide building heating and cooling. The potential benefits of this type of system include both energy savings and operating and equipment cost savings when compared to more conventional building heating and cooling systems. The study involved monitoring of equipment performance, computer simulation of the building energy system dynamics, and analysis of actual and modelled system efficiency. It was found that the building is presently operating as a 'low energy' building, despite a number of factors which have limited the heat pump system's capability to entirely meet winter heating requirements. Significant additional operation efficiency and cost savings are potentially available if a variety of measures are undertaken, including: stratification of the thermal storage system, utilization of demand management controls, and increased lighting system efficiency.by Abbe Ellen Bjorklund.M.S

How Designers Are Transforming Healthcare
This is an open access book. How Designers are Transforming Healthcare is a bold manifesto for change, demonstrating the value of a strategic design-led approach. Drawing on a rich array of real-world projects, this book illustrates how designers, in collaboration with clinicians and consumers, are co-creating transformative change across healthcare environments, products, services, and systems. In a fascinating multi-voice conversation, this book outlines how design methods and mindsets, including co-design, prototyping, design and futures thinking, facilitates creative problem-solving. The ideas, tools, and challenges in How Designers are Transforming Healthcare make it a vital text - a doer’s guide - for designers, clinicians, academics, consumers, and policymakers seeking innovative strategies for engagement, innovation and improvement in healthcare
A new foundation: physical Integrity, disabled dance and cultural heritage
This is the author accepted manuscript.Introduction
Leading dance commentators have argued that ‘disability remains a marginalised and under-theorised area in dance studies’, notwithstanding advances in the growth of mixed ability dance companies, and the expansion of critical scholarship around dance and disability (Albright Copper and Brandstetter 2015:3, 5). We agree that ‘disabled dance’ is under-theorised; in the light of this we have chosen to continue to use the term ‘disabled dance’, but we stress that we do not claim that disabled dance should be seen as a distinct art-form, and certainly not a distinct genre, but as a unique and important integrated element of the dance community that deserves its place alongside any other sector within that community. Further, for as long as this is so and disabled dance lacks a philosophy to deepen understanding and knowledge of the dance and its philosophy, disabled dance will continue to evolve in fits and starts, and to be persistently at the margins of dance. Supporting increased diversity among candidates
Historically, doctoral candidates were few in number, studied in their countries of origin, and were drawn from dominant societal strata. However, over the present century, there has been a massive expansion globally in the number of doctoral candidates which has led to the incorporation of hitherto un- or under-represented groups and transformed the composition of the population. The implications for supervision of two major aspects of that transformation, namely the growth in international candidates and the increase in candidates from indigenous populations respectively, are discussed in Chapters 7 and 8 of the first volume of ‘Confident Supervisors’.The present chapter focuses upon the implications for supervisors of other aspects of the diversification of the domestic candidate population. In particular, it seeks toOutline the key changes in the candidate populationReview the benefits of wider participationIdentify the key challenges which non-traditional candidates may faceLook at what supervisors can do to support themEnsure that the notion of diversity is inclusive in that it addresses issues for all research learners
