    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

    Le niveau de Landau zéro dans le graphène à haute mobilité, avec un état fondamental polarisé en spin, abrite une phase d'isolant topologique quantique Hall au point de neutralité de charge (CNP). Cette phase se caractérise par un volume isolant et des états de bord hélicoïdaux contre-propagants polarisés en spin. Coupler cette phase hélicoïdale à un supraconducteur de type s-wave constitue une voie prometteuse pour réaliser la supraconductivité topologique et étudier la physique des fermions de Majorana. Cependant, expérimentalement, le faible facteur g dans le graphène et les interactions coulombiennes omniprésentes ont représenté un obstacle, favorisant un état fondamental trivial isolant polarisé en vallée à faibles champs, nécessaire pour maintenir la supraconductivité. Des expériences récentes ont ajusté l’état fondamental du zLL vers la phase hélicoïdale à faibles champs en écrantant la partie à longue portée des interactions coulombiennes à l'aide d'un substrat à constante diélectrique élevée, SrTiO3. Cependant, la constante diélectrique non linéaire et hystérétique du SrTiO3, ainsi que les parois de domaines ferroélectriques, en font un matériau moins qu'idéal pour des dispositifs à haute mobilité stables et reproductibles, essentiels pour les applications futures.Dans cette thèse, nous présentons une plateforme matérielle plus stable pour écranter les interactions coulombiennes dans les hétérostructures de graphène encapsulé par du nitrure de bore hexagonal (hBN-Gr-hBN). Nous utilisons une électrode métallique 2D en Bi2Se3 à la fois comme substrat d’écrantage et comme électrode de grille, séparée du plan de graphène encapsulé par une fine couche de hBN. Dans les hétérostructures ainsi obtenues, nous mesurons systématiquement une mobilité Hall ultra-élevée, nous permettant d'observer l'effet Hall quantique et le transport de bord hélicoïdal au CNP pour des champs aussi faibles que 200 mT. Nous examinons d'abord le rôle significatif joué par le dopage et la taille des contacts sur la quantification de la résistance de bord hélicoïdal. Nous observons une non-additivité de la résistance à 2 bornes dans les dispositifs avec des contacts étroits, que nous attribuons à une équilibration imparfaite dans les contacts. Nous effectuons des simulations numériques de l'effet du dopage et du désordre dépendant de la largeur des contacts sur l'équilibration, et montrons que dans les dispositifs avec des contacts plus larges, la résistance atteint la valeur quantifiée malgré le dopage des contacts. Dans les dispositifs fabriqués par la suite avec des contacts plus larges, nous mesurons systématiquement une quantification quasi-idéale à 4K et 80mK. Nous caractérisons également le transport de bord hélicoïdal dans ces dispositifs en transmettant ou rétrodiffusant sélectivement les états de bord hélicoïdaux à travers une électrode supérieure servant de barrière Hall quantique. Nous présentons un modèle basé sur le formalisme de Landauer-Büttiker pour les états de bord hélicoïdaux qui s'aligne bien avec les résultats expérimentaux. Cet ensemble de données complet, provenant de plusieurs échantillons, fournit des preuves convaincantes d'une phase hélicoïdale reproductible dans le graphène à neutralité de charge sur Bi2Se3 et encourage de futurs efforts pour intégrer la supraconductivité afin de rechercher une supraconductivité topologique.The zeroth Landau level in high-mobility graphene, with a spin-polarized ground state, hosts a quantum Hall topological insulator phase at the charge neutrality point (CNP). This phase is characterized by an insulating bulk and spin-polarized, counterpropagating helical edge states. Coupling this helical phase to an s-wave superconductor is a promising route toward realizing topological superconductivity and studying Majorana physics. Experimentally, however, the small g-factor in graphene and prevalent Coulomb interactions have proven to be a roadblock, favoring a trivial insulating valley-polarized ground state at low fields, which is required to sustain superconductivity. Recent experiments tuned the ground state in the zLL to the helical phase at low fields by screening the long-range part of the Coulomb interactions using a high dielectric constant substrate, SrTiO3. However, the non-linear and hysteretic dielectric constant of SrTiO3, along with ferroelectric domain walls, makes it less than ideal for stable and reproducible high-mobility devices, crucial for future applications.In this thesis, we present a more stable material platform for screening Coulomb interactions in hexagonal boron nitride encapsulated graphene (hBN-Gr-hBN) heterostructures. We utilize a 2D metallic Bi2Se3 electrode as both the screening substrate and gate electrode, separated from the encapsulated graphene plane by an ultrathin hBN layer. In the resulting heterostructures, we consistently measure ultra-high Hall mobility, allowing us to observe the quantum Hall effect and helical edge transport at CNP at fields as low as 200 mT. We first examine the significant role played by contact doping and size on the quantization of helical edge resistance. We observe non-additivity of 2-terminal resistance in devices with narrow contacts, which we attribute to imperfect equilibration in the contacts. We perform numerical simulations of the effect of doping and contact width-dependent disorder on equilibration and show that in devices with wider contacts, the resistance reaches the quantized value despite contact doping. In the subsequently fabricated devices with wider contacts, we systematically measure near-ideal quantization at 4K and 80mK. We further characterize the helical edge transport in these devices by selectively transmitting/backscattering helical edge states through a topgate electrode serving as a quantum Hall barrier. We present a model based on the Landauer-Büttiker formalism for helical edge states that aligns well with experimental results. This comprehensive set of data from several samples provides convincing evidence for a reproducible quantum spin Hall phase in charge-neutral graphene on Bi2Se3 and prompts further efforts to incorporate superconductivity to look for topological superconductivity
