A highly-efficient technique for evaluating bond-orientational order parameters

    No full text
We propose a novel, highly-efficient approach for the evaluation of bond-orientational order parameters (BOPs). Our approach exploits the properties of spherical harmonics and Wigner 3jj-symbols to reduce the number of terms in the expressions for BOPs, and employs simultaneous interpolation of normalised associated Legendre polynomials and trigonometric functions to dramatically reduce the total number of arithmetic operations. Using realistic test cases, we show how the above, combined with a CPU-cache-friendly data structure, leads to a 10 to 50-fold performance increase over approaches currently in use, depending on the size of the interpolation grids and the machine used. As the proposed approach is an approximation, we demonstrate that the errors it introduces are well-behaved, controllable and essentially negligible for practical grid sizes. We benchmark our approach against other structure identification methods (centro-symmetry parameter (CSP), common neighbour analysis (CNA), common neighbourhood parameter (CNP) and Voronoi analysis), generally regarded as much faster than BOPs, and demonstrate that our formulation is able to outperform them for all studied systems

Structure and properties of liquid Al–Cu alloys: empirical potentials compared

    No full text
We report on the structure and mass transport properties of liquid Al–Cu alloys predicted by two recently-developed empirical many-body potentials: MEAM (Jelinek et al., 2012) and EAM-ADP (Apostol and Mishin, 2011), and by the well-known Gupta potential. Total and partial pair correlation functions, angular distribution functions, densities, coordination numbers and self-diffusion coefficients are compared with published experimental and ab initio results for a number of temperatures above the liquidus. Prevalent local orderings are characterized by means of Voronoi analysis. Densities and the temperature coefficient of density are compared with experiment for different compositions of the alloy. All three studied potentials, and EAM-ADP and MEAM in particular, display marked difficulty in describing mixed (Al–Cu) interactions. EAM-ADP mispredicts Cu-rich alloys to re-solidify at all temperatures studied, while MEAM’s predictions for the density and its temperature dependence are poor for Al-rich compositions. Overall, the best description of liquid Al–Cu is offered by the Gupta potential, which is found to give a reasonable picture of short-range order and predicts mass transport coefficients and densities in moderately good agreement with experiment

In-depth characterization of icosahedral ordering in liquid copper

The presence of icosahedral ordering in liquid copper at temperatures close to the melting point is now wellestablished both experimentally and through computer simulation. However, a more elaborate analysis of local icosahedral and icosahedron-like structures, together with a system for classifying such structures based on some measure of “icosahedrity”, has so far been conspicuously absent in the literature. Similarly, the dynamics of these structures has not yet received the attention it merits. We present a new method for structural analysis, which combines Voronoi analysis with bond-orientationalorder parameters, and apply it to liquid Cu configurations obtained from tight-binding molecular dynamics at arange of temperatures near the melting point. We introduce a clear system for classifying local structures according to their degree of similarity to the perfect icosahedron, and show how their energies of formation correlate with our structural descriptor. We examine the frequencies of occurrence for the classes of Voronoi polyhedra we distinguish, calculate their lifetimes, and establish the temperature dependence of these properties. We explore the dynamics of icosahedron-like structures by examining how individual classes transform between one another. Finally, we perform structural correlation analysis, demonstrating, among other things, that icosahedra and icosahedron-like structures preferentially connect and show a tendency towards clustering. We believe our approach can be readily applied in studies of icosahedral ordering in liquid metals or metallic glasses

Novel method for realistically simulating the deposition of thin films from the gas phase and its application to study the growth of thin gold film on crystalline silicon

We present a novel approach for simulating thin film (TF) deposition from the gas phase at the atomistic scale, combining molecular dynamics (MD) and time-stamped force-bias Monte Carlo (tfMC). In this approach, MD, with its fine temporal resolution, captures fast events, such as incident atom-substrate collisions, while tfMC simulates slow relaxation processes, enhancing temporal scale coverage. The proposed approach also adequately models deposition conditions, for example, by accounting for realistic energy and angle distributions in the description of the incident flux. To demonstrate its efficacy, we apply it to simulate the physical vapor deposition of a 3 nm Au TF on crystalline Si. We find that the entire deposition process consisted of four distinct stages: (i) the initial degradation of the Si substrate, (ii) formation of a mixed Au-Si interface layer, (iii) nucleation and growth of a polycrystalline Au layer, proceeding in a fashion close to the Frank-van der Merwe mode (layer-by-layer growth), and (iv) postdeposition relaxation of microstructure. The produced TF was comprehensively characterized, revealing that the deposited polycrystalline Au layer contained a considerable number of defects, including dislocations, stacking faults, grain boundaries, and Si impurities. The analysis also showed that in the simulated high-energy deposition the Si substrate was considerably degraded and that the disordered Au-Si layer which formed at the interface resembled the melt-quenched Au82Si18 eutectic. A comparison with an analogous MD simulation revealed that the MD + tfMC approach extended the accessible time scale 5-fold, allowing us to reach the microsecond scale, and yielding a TF with higher crystallinity and better-developed microstructure. The deposition rate used in the MD + tfMC simulation was two to 3 orders of magnitude lower than in other recent, but purely MD, simulations, being significantly closer to experiment.</p

Properties of oxygen vacancy and hydrogen interstitial defects in strontium titanate: DFT + Ud,p calculations

This work presents extensive theoretical studies focused on the mixed ion-electron transport in cubic strontium titanate (STO). A new approach to the description of this difficult system was developed within the framework of linear-scaling Kohn-Sham density functional theory, as realized in the ONETEP program. The description we present is free of any empirical parameters and relies on the Hubbard U and Hund's J corrections applied to both Ti and O atoms. The proposed methodology was validated by considering perfect STO. Its calculated properties were found to be in close agreement with experiments and calculations at higher levels of theory. The validated approach was subsequently employed to study the oxygen vacancy (VO) and the hydrogen interstitial (IH), using very large supercells (625 ± 1 atoms). The relaxed configurations of defects were obtained through fastidious energy minimization and later analyzed from a number of perspectives. The calculated defect formation energies and charge transition levels (CTLs) were found to be in close agreement with the experiment. With the exception of the charge-neutral VO, all considered defects were found to introduce shallow states, located down to 0.2 eV below the conduction band. Our calculations revealed a large 1 eV difference in the thermodynamic and optical CTLs of the neutral VO, explaining the inconsistencies observed-till now-between conduction and spectroscopic measurements. The influence of defects on the bonding characteristics and the crystalline structure of STO was quantified, revealing that both VOand IHdefects lead to a significant polarization and strong tilting of the TiO6octahedra.</p

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Influence of addition of carbon nanotubes on rheological properties of selected liquid lubricants - a computer simulation study

    No full text
This work is motivated by the improvement of anti-friction properties of lubricants by addition of CNTs proved experimentally in literature. In particular, a methodology is developed to compute the shear viscosity of liquid lubricants (Propylene Glycol) based on Molecular Dynamics simulation. Non-Equilibrium molecular dynamics (NEMD) approach is used with a reactive force field ReaxFF implemented in LAMMPS. The simulations are performed using the canonical (NVT) ensemble with the so-called SLLOD algorithm. Couette flow is imposed on the system by using Lees-Edwards periodic boundary conditions. Suitable parameters such as simulation time and imposed shear velocity are obtained. Using these parameters, the influence of addition of 27 wt% CNTs to Propylene Glycol on its viscosity is analyzed. Results show that 3.2 million time-steps with a 0.1 fs time-step size is not sufficient for the system to reach equilibrium state for such calculations. With the available computational resources, a shear velocity of 5 × 10−5 Å/fs was observed to give viscosity value with approximately 43% error as compared to the experimental value. Moreover, the lubricant exhibited a shear thinning behaviour with increasing shear rates. CNTs enhanced the lubricant's viscosity by 100-190% depending upon the averaging method used for calculation
