1-D Loading of charred particles
The countries who have signed the Malta convention in 1992 are committed to preserve in situ archeological sites instead of excavating them and wasting them for future generations. Unfortunately there are no tools available to predict the impact of civil engineering constructions on buried archeological sites. This report is focused on the mechanical behavior of charred organic matter. Small charred organic particles (seeds, nut shells or wood fragments) are among the most vulnerable archeological remains that are often investigated in archeological studies. Their study reveals, for example, information on the way of subsidence of former generations or help to determine the degree of conservation of an archeological site. Assemblies of charred particles were subjected, mixed on not with sand to 1D compression tests to understand the influence of void ratio, particle size distribution and the protective function of surrounding soil (sand) on particle damage. To characterize the integrity of the particles during scanning, we scanned a sample at several stages of loading in a micro-CT scanner. We assumed that particles fragmented in small pieces have lost their archeological value since they cannot be recovered during traditional archeological survey by sieving. As we had a limited source of real archeological charred particles, we investigated the possibility of using analogs (processed cereals) in trial mechanical tests. We assessed the resemblance between both materials by comparing their responses to individual crushing tests. We also investigated the possibility to reconstitute mixtures of clay and charcoal with a geotechnical centrifuge. The following conclusions have been drawn. When loading a sample of charcoal particles to 320 kPa in steps of 80 kPa, first rearrangement of the particles takes place. The particles will compact until failure occurs. The deformations of the particles vary from tensile failure, indenting neighboring particles, splitting and crushing of the individual particles. The maximum force which an individual particle can bear is about 0.012N. The analog material tested during this project is weaker than the material of interest so we can conclude that if the analog material can bear a certain force the charcoal will definitely stay intact under such conditions. The Dynamic and Static Behaviour of Foam in a Model Porous Media
Foam has many useful features as an injection fluid for EOR. One of the most important aspects, is to reduce the gas mobility in a porous media. The manners in which the mobility of gas is reduced, is both by the increase of the gas apparent viscosity and by the trapping of the gas within the porous media, which reduces the relative permeability of gas. However, the dynamics and stability of foam in a porous network are not fully understood due to the complexity of foam behaviour in a porous media. A visual understanding of the dynamic processes is therefore of great value. In this project a better understanding of the aging mechanism of foam namely coarsening, and the gas entrapment (together with its effects) in an ideal micromodel with uniform permeability is pursued. Previously, all methods to identify the quantity of trapped gas in a 3D porous media required injection of a tracer gas. Similarly, direct measurements of the dynamics of coarsening in a porous media are scarce in contrast to the coursing studies of foam in bulk. The shortcomings can be addressed by using a 2D porous media to directly measure the trapped gas fraction of foam flow at steady state conditions and also give an insight into how the quantity of trapped gas depends on the Darcy velocity, the foam quality and the position in the micromodel. Furthermore, the coarsening time scale for microfoam in a confined porous media was investigated with the deviation from Von Neumanns law. Foam flood experiments were conducted in a 2D idealized micromodel with an average pore size of 60 μm and total dimensions of 60mm x 0.8mm x 5um. Firstly the mechanism of foam generation and flow in a porous media was observed. Secondly, the different stages of coarsening was investigated, by analysis of the increased average bubble size and the quantification of the characteristic times for the evolution of the numbers of bubbles. Thirdly, coarsening experiments were conducted in a core, to test the hypothesis that a additional pressure would be required to reactivate flow after coarsening. Fourtly, foam quality scans were made at steady state conditions to measure the pressure drop and the apparent viscosities for different solution concentrations of Alpha Olefin Sulfonate (AOS 14-16). The characteristic time for a foam to coarsen is found to be approximately 4 minutes, while bubbles with a size around 40 um disappear in under 1 minute. Coarsening in a porous media is limited to the pore size, the bubbles and lamellae gain a stable, minimum energy position in the pore throats. Coarsening observed during foam flow caused a conversion of plug foam flow into preferential flow paths. Results show trapped gas fractions ranging from 64% to 11% for velocities from 0.05 m/s to 0.4 m/s and the fraction of trapped gas as function of increasing foam quality ranged from 21% down to 6%. Apparent viscosities found were low but in line with the apparent viscosities obtained in core flood experiments. Fg* seperating two foam regimes of 0.65, 0.44 and 0.4 were observed for three different AOS concentrations of 0.1wt%, 0.05wt% and 0.01wt% respectively in the micromodel. Newbigging Pottery Musselburgh, Scotland c 1800 - c 1930 Ceramic Resource Disc 1
The Newbigging ceramic material, listed and photographed on the enclosed disk has been assigned to the National Museums of Scotland and was catalogued using accession numbers (FD 2004.1.1 to 507. This small and fairly commonplace ceramic assemblage derives from a pottery of 19th and early 20th century date. The shards have been divided by fabric type, form and decoration into 6 folders and 58 files. The majority of the pottery was recovered during a small rescue excavation and salvage operation funded by Historic Scotland. Most of the on site work was carried out by Alison McIntyre, Alan Radley and the author over a three week period at the end of December 1987 and beginning of January 198
Dynamic magnetic properties of amorphous Fe80B20 thin films and their relation to interfaces
This paper was presented at the 64th Annual Conference on Magnetism and Magnetic Materials.We present a ferromagnetic resonance study of the dynamic properties of a set of amorphous Fe-B films deposited on Corning Glass® and MgO (001) substrates, either with or without capping. We show that the in plane anisotropy of the MgO grown films contains both uniaxial and biaxial components whereas it is just uniaxial for those grown on glass. The angular dependence of the linewidth strongly differs in terms of symmetry and magnitude depending on the substrate and capping. We discuss the role of the interfaces on the magnetization damping and the generation of the anisotropy. We obtained values of the intrinsic damping parameters comparable to the lowest ones reported for amorphous films of similar compositions. © 2020 Author(s).We thank the financial support by Spanish MINECO,

The Campbells: lordship, literature and liminality
The Campbells have the potential to offer much to the theme of literature and borders, given that the kindred’s astonishing political success in the late medieval and early modern period depended heavily upon the ability to negotiate multiple frontiers: between Highlands and Lowlands; between Gaelic Scotland and Ireland, and, especially after the Reformation, with England and the matter of Britain. This paper will explore the literary dimension to Campbell expansionism, from the Book of the Dean of Lismore in the earlier sixteenth century, to poetry addressed to dukes of Argyll in the earlier eighteenth century. Particular attention will be paid to the literary proclivities of the household of the Campbells of Glenorchy on either side of what appears to be a major watershed in 1550; and to the agenda of the Campbell protégé John Carswell, first post-Reformation bishop of the Isles, and author of the first printed book in Gaelic in either Scotland or Ireland, Foirm na n-Urrnuidheadh (‘The Form of Prayers’), published at Edinburgh in 1567
The Hematopoietic Transcription Factors RUNX1 and ERG Prevent AML1-ETO Oncogene Overexpression and Onset of the Apoptosis Program in t(8;21) AMLs

163345.pdf (Publisher’s version ) (Open Access)The t(8;21) acute myeloid leukemia (AML)-associated oncoprotein AML1-ETO disrupts normal hematopoietic differentiation. Here, we have investigated its effects on the transcriptome and epigenome in t(8,21) patient cells. AML1-ETO binding was found at promoter regions of active genes with high levels of histone acetylation but also at distal elements characterized by low acetylation levels and binding of the hematopoietic transcription factors LYL1 and LMO2. In contrast, ERG, FLI1, TAL1, and RUNX1 bind at all AML1-ETO-occupied regulatory regions, including those of the AML1-ETO gene itself, suggesting their involvement in regulating AML1-ETO expression levels. While expression of AML1-ETO in myeloid differentiated induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs) induces leukemic characteristics, overexpression increases cell death. We find that expression of wild-type transcription factors RUNX1 and ERG in AML is required to prevent this oncogene overexpression. Together our results show that the interplay of the epigenome and transcription factors prevents apoptosis in t(8;21) AML cells
Trust Requirements in E-Health System: A Conceptual Framework
Resulting from the development of new technology, conventional scientific practices have migrated into computer-based infrastructures, called e-science. Specifically, escience applied in health discipline is called e-health. It is an organized system that deals to diagnose and treat patients. Considering trust is an important role and fundamental for the provision of effective healthcare service, this paper discusses trust requirement in e-health. To highlight the importance of trust in e-health system, a conceptual framework of trust requirements in e-health system is developed. Drawn from literature search framed by STARLITE, a conceptual framework that addresses trust resulting from relationships of various actors based on two perspectives: sociotechnical and technical perspectives are presented. This framework suggests that e-health system must build a trust relationship between actors and understand trust based on sociotechnical and technical perspectives. Further, security and privacy that protect the confidentiality of patient’s data, especially m-health (mobile health) also need trust in resource sharing. It can be concluded that trust requirements in e-health depend on how the media transmits a social experience, patient-system relationship, and collaboration of software engineering and healthcare professionals. The implementation of trust requirements has the potential to produce well-engineered software in a healthcare organization, resulting in the use of software for effective diagnosis and treatment of patients
Depression: Can we predict who will relapse?
This thesis addresses risk factors and proposed mechanisms to explain relapse to depression. Volume 1 comprises three parts: Part 1 is a literature review consisting of meta-reviews of systematic and non-systematic reviews of studies reporting on risk factors for relapse to depression, and a systematic-review of neuroimaging and experimental studies investigating risk factors for relapse and potential mechanisms of action of these risk factors. The reviews found that only residual symptoms of depression at the end of treatment and childhood maltreatment were sufficiently evidenced as predictors of relapse and neither have great clinical utility. A number of psychological and neuropsychological factors were suggested to play a role in conferring risk for relapse. Considering the inter-relationships between these factors the reviews were used to propose a conceptual framework which may be used to help guide future research into relapse to depression in adults. Part 2 is an empirical paper in which data were analysed from service users of a primary care mental health service to identify risk factors for relapse and for the presence of residual symptoms, and survival analysis methods were used to determine when relapses occur most often and what factors impact survival. In addition, a prospective cohort study was formed to investigate the relationship between cognitive control and depressive symptoms. The findings confirmed that cognitive control can be used to predict residual symptoms of depression post-treatment and therefore potentially to predict relapse. Part 3 is a critical appraisal focussing on the theoretical reasons as to why studying relapse in a manner as used in the prospective study is so important and discusses the logistical difficulties conducting such research in the current context of NHS services and of the D.Clin.Psy research project. Methodological decisions made that impacted upon the research process are discussed and reflective conclusions are offered
