Postmodern epistemology and the Christian apologetics of CS Lewis
Evangelicalism at the turn of this century finds itself facing a challenge that undermines its very validity. This challenge is generally referred to as postmodernism. Within the contemporary evangelical paradigm, the context in which this term is generally used refers to epistemology the structure and limitations of human self-consciousness. The gist of the popular post-modernist argument is that human consciousness always develops inductively from the inside, outward utilising a particular linguistic and cultural frame of reference in order to construct conceptions of reality. Human self-consciousness, as understood from this context, is therefore always ultimately, something that can only be referred to as insulated. In the light of this, human self- consciousness can have no direct access to what may be commonly referred to as, an absolute truth

Edith Bolling Wilson – prezydent w spódnicy, czyli rzecz o kobiecie, która rządziła Ameryką w latach 1915–1921
Usually, American presidents’ wives enjoyed their compatriots’ affection. Some played significant roles in their spouses’ administrations, although in a formal legal sense, they had no state responsibilities. The evolution of their roles and the increasing public activity of many of them, particularly in the 20th and 21st centuries, have resulted in lasting changes to the American presidency. In the diverse pantheon of American female presidents, President Woodrow Wilson’s second wife, Edith Bolling Wilson, holds a special place because of her unprecedented role in her husband’s administration. This article aims to provide an overview of her activities as First Lady (from December 1915 to March 1921), with a particular focus on her role and enormous influence on presidential decisions and American politics from the autumn of 1919, i.e., during Wilson’s illness.Żony amerykańskich prezydentów cieszyły się zwykle sympatią rodaków. Niektóre z nich odegrały znaczącą rolę w administracjach małżonków, choć w sensie formalnoprawnym nie miały żadnych obowiązków państwowych. Ewolucja ich ról i coraz większa aktywność publiczna wielu z nich, zwłaszcza w XX i XXI w., spowodowały z czasem trwałe zmiany w amerykańskiej prezydenturze.

GenomegaMap: Within-Species Genome-Wide dN/dS Estimation from over 10,000 Genomes.
The dN/dS ratio provides evidence of adaptation or functional constraint in protein-coding genes by quantifying the relative excess or deficit of amino acid-replacing versus silent nucleotide variation. Inexpensive sequencing promises a better understanding of parameters, such as dN/dS, but analyzing very large data sets poses a major statistical challenge. Here, I introduce genomegaMap for estimating within-species genome-wide variation in dN/dS, and I apply it to 3,979 genes across 10,209 tuberculosis genomes to characterize the selection pressures shaping this global pathogen. GenomegaMap is a phylogeny-free method that addresses two major problems with existing approaches: 1) It is fast no matter how large the sample size and 2) it is robust to recombination, which causes phylogenetic methods to report artefactual signals of adaptation. GenomegaMap uses population genetics theory to approximate the distribution of allele frequencies under general, parent-dependent mutation models. Coalescent simulations show that substitution parameters are well estimated even when genomegaMap's simplifying assumption of independence among sites is violated. I demonstrate the ability of genomegaMap to detect genuine signatures of selection at antimicrobial resistance-conferring substitutions in Mycobacterium tuberculosis and describe a novel signature of selection in the cold-shock DEAD-box protein A gene deaD/csdA. The genomegaMap approach helps accelerate the exploitation of big data for gaining new insights into evolution within species

DN detection during SLSF tests
During two tests in the Sodium Loop Safety Facility (W2 and P4), two systems were operated to detect delayed neutrons from exposed fuel. One monitored directly the sodium in the in-pile loop with a transit delay from the flux region of approx.2 seconds; the other conducted a sample stream of sodium to external detectors with a transit delay which could be varied from approx.10 to approx. 40 seconds. Detectors of a wide range of sensitivity were operated in pulse and current mode; DN signals varying from <1 mm/sup 2/ recoil to many grams of molten fuel could be recorded reliably without saturation. During the W2 and P4 tests a continuous DN record was made. Massive fuel failure signals were observed during reactor transients in both tests, including events interpreted as fuel melting and exposure of large areas. The steady signal from the blockage in P4 was studied as a function of reactor power and sodium temperature
Rational conjugacy classes of maximal tori in groups of Dn
Author original manuscript (preprint)We give a concrete characterization of the rational conjugacy classes of maximal tori in groups of type Dn, with specific emphasis on the case of number fields and p-adic fields. This includes the forms associated to quadratic spaces, all of their inner and outer forms as well as the Spin groups, their simply connected covers. In particular, in this work, we handle all (simply connected) outer forms of D4.N
