Planning factors in municipal bikesharing network design: A qualitative study
No full textUrban mobility planning is increasingly characterized by the pressure to establish low-emission, space-efficient, and socially inclusive transport services. One such planning task for decision-makers in public institutions is the efficient design of bicycle-sharing networks. This study examines the factors that influence decision-making in this process, both among practitioners and within the research literature on decision support systems (DSS). Employing a dual approach of academic literature review and 16 qualitative interviews with public sector planners, we identify and compare different dimensions of key factors affecting location choice. The results reveal significant contrasts, for instance, between the emphasis placed by academic researchers on ensemble optimization of quantifiable factors and the more target-complex, intuitive approaches pursued by public planning practitioners. We blend core characteristics from both perspectives in a synthesis analysis. We argue that future efforts should aim for more vertical planning assistance, citizen involvement for diversified demand indications, integration of local factors into DSS, and standardized data formats to enable better DSS integration. Our study offers a rare qualitative insight into a complex choice problem faced by public decision-makers, linked with predominantly quantitative research
Mobility Need-Adaptive Housing Platforms: The Benefit of a Commute Time Search Feature
No full textThe growing influx of people to urban areas has resulted in a tense housing market in many places, making the search for a suitable residence an increased challenge. Dedicated online platforms facilitate this process and offer two distinct approaches to find suitable accommodations concerning its location. Traditionally, users can search for a general area like a city to narrow down the results displayed. Additionally, some platforms offer searches based on the maximum commute time between apartments and points of interest. This paper investigates the benefit such approaches yield concerning technology acceptance and the fit of the task and information representation. Thus, a prototypically implemented online platform with and without a commute time search feature was evaluated in an online experiment. The treatment specification achieved significantly better results in terms of information quality and technology acceptance, implicating that such a design should be preferred for websites that facilitate the search for apartments. These insights can contribute to an enhanced understanding of visual system design to reduce the negative sustainability impacts of traffic induced by a divergence of residential and workplaces
Towards an Understanding of Hydrogen Supply Chains: A Structured Literature Review Regarding Sustainability Evaluation
No full textHydrogen technologies have received increased attention in research and development to foster the shift towards carbon-neutral energy systems. Depending on the specific production techniques, transportation concepts, and application areas, hydrogen supply chains (HSCs) can be anything from part of the energy transition problem to part of the solution: Even more than battery-driven electric mobility, hydrogen is a polyvalent technology and can be used in very different contexts with specific positive or negative sustainability impacts. Thus, a detailed sustainability evaluation is crucial for decision making in the context of hydrogen technology and its diverse application fields. This article provides a comprehensive, structured literature review in the context of HSCs along the triple bottom line dimensions of environmental, economic, and social sustainability, analyzing a total of 288 research papers. As a result, we identify research gaps mostly regarding social sustainability and the supply chain stages of hydrogen distribution and usage. We suggest further research to concentrate on these gaps, thus strengthening our understanding of comprehensive sustainability evaluations for HSCs, especially in social sustainability evaluation. In addition, we provide an additional approach for discussion by adding literature review results from neighboring fields, highlighting the joint challenges and insights regarding sustainability evaluation

The reality of fiction: the ECO by Mathias Goeritz

This article covers the full biography of a building, the Experimental Museum El Eco, designed by Germanborn and Mexican émigré artist and architect Mathias Goeritz. It provides an approach intersecting the biography of the author, the history of the building, and prominent individuals of the two cultural traditions, German and Mexican, who participated in the creation of a very special and unique building: El Eco. On the one hand, the ethics of Expressionism, the interest in non-European art, the cult of primitivism and the aesthetic system of the pair of concepts abstraction-empathy, all stemming from German culture. On the other, the pantheistic religiosity of landscape, zoomorphism and anthropomorphism, the interest in masks, and the aesthetics of monumental scale, stemming from pre-Cortesian Mexican culture. Taking the stance of intertwining Mathias Goeritz parcours with those of individuals and issues from his German past and his Mexican future – highlighting the figures of Wilhelm Worringer, Paul Westheim, Luis Barragán, Edmundo O'Gorman, and Ida Rodríguez Prampolini – this article proposes a return trip from fiction to reality, following in the footsteps of the author and comparing them with the pathway of the very building El Eco
Oswald Mathias Ungers and Sol LeWitt: Variations
No full textOne of the fundamentals of Oswald Mathias Ungers work is the definition of a new unity between art and architecture. What this investigation is focused on is the identification of the intersection point between art and architecture, considering the project for the Entrance to the Kaiserthermen in Trier (20032007) as case study, revealing the system of theoretical, methodological and compositional correspondences. Plastic art is Ungers' main interlocutor: one of the author's most important references is Sol LeWitt (1928-2007), an artist he admired and collected. Setting the work of Oswald Mathias Unger and Sol LeWitt side by side, offers the opportunity to underline the shared interpretation that the two authors have of the world of forms postulated by Henri Focillon (1881-1943) in Life of Forms, according to which form, autonomous with respect to time and place, has its own universe, governed by its own laws, space and matter. According to these premises, we propose to read Trier's building through the instruments of art, following the hypothesis that in this project art embodies a creative and positive component in the definition of architecture, a cultural stimulus that guides the author in the design process
