    Seaward migrating subyearling Chinook salmon avoid overhead cover

    Approximately threequarters of migrating autumn (fall) chinook salmon Oncorhynchus tshawytscha smolts avoided a covered channel and selected an uncovered channel when presented with a choice in an experimental flume. Rejection of overhead cover occurred prior to, but was rare postchannel entrance. Smolts may selectively reject riparian cover as an adaptive behavioural response to minimize predation risk and enhance rates of migration. The findings have implications for fish bypass design and riparian habitat and culvert restoration

    Afin de mieux comprendre les adaptations cellulaires induites suite à une prise chronique de morphine, une stratégie de type protéomique différentielle combinant les techniques d'électrophorèse et de spectrométrie de masse a été entreprise dans des cellules de neuroblastome humain sh-sy5y surexprimant le récepteur mop. l'étude globale des modifications induites par la morphine sur le protéome total a permis d'identifier environ 50 protéines impliquées dans des processus tels que l'organisation du cytosquelette, le trafic vésiculaire, la dégradation des protéines et la signalisation cellulaire. de plus, nous avons montré qu'un traitement chronique à la morphine entraînait la dégradation par le protéasome de sous-unités de protéines g; la dégradation deg étant étroitement corrélée à la sensibilisation de l'adénylyl cyclase, un phénomène impliqué dans la dépendance à la morphine. nos travaux suggèrent ainsi que le protéasome est impliqué dans les effets à long terme de la morphine

    Input-output characterization of fiber composites by SH waves

    Input-output characterization of fiber composites is studied theoretically by tracing SH waves in the media. A fiberglass epoxy composite is modeled as a homogeneous transversely isotropic continuum plate. The reflection of an SH wave at a stress-free plane boundary in a semi-infinite transversely isotropic medium is considered first. It is found that an incident SH wave reflects only a similar SH wave back into the medium. It is also established that the angle of reflection of the reflected wave is equal to the angle of incidence of the incident wave. The phase velocity of the SH waves and the delay time of the SH waves in reaching the receiving transducer are computed as functions of a reflection index, defined as the number of reflections of the SH waves from the bottom face of the continuum plate. The directivity function corresponding to the shear stress associated with the SH waves in the continuum plate is also derived as a function of the reflection index. A theoretical output voltage from the receiving transducer is calculated for a tone burst (a periodic input voltage of finite duration). The output voltage is shown for tone bursts of duration 60 microseconds and center frequencies of 0.75, 1.00, and 1.25 MHz. The study enhances the quantitative and qualitative understanding of the nondestructive evaluation (NDE) of fiber composites which can be modeled as transversely isotropic media

    CNV and nervous system diseases - what's new?

    Several new genomic disorders caused by copy number variation (CNV) of genes whose dosage is critical for the physiological function of the nervous system have been recently identified. Dup(7)(q11.23) patients carry duplications of the genomic region deleted in Williams-Beuren syndrome, they are characterized by prominent speech delay. The phenotypes of Potocki-Lupski syndrome and MECP2 duplication syndrome were neuropsychologically examined in detail, which revealed autism as an endophenotype and a prominent behavioral feature of these disorders. Tandem duplication of LMNB1 was reported to cause adult-onset autosomal dominant leukodystrophy. PAFAH1B1/LIS1 and YWHAE, which were deleted in isolated lissencephaly (PAFAH1B1/LIS1 alone) and Miller-Dieker syndrome (both genes), were found to be duplicated in patients with developmental delay. Finally, two novel microdeletion syndromes affecting 17q21.31 and 15q13.3, as well as their reciprocal duplications, were also identified.     Development and evaluation of a hand held computer based on-call pack for health protection out of hours duty: a pilot study

    Background: The on call service for health protection in most parts of the UK is provided by general public health consultants, registrars and nurses as the first tier of response backed up by medical consultants in health protection. The first tier responder usually carries a large bag of papers containing both local and national guidance on the management of common cases/incidents. An electronic on call pack may provide a suitable practical alternative to large paper based systems and help professionals deliver out of hours health protection advice and response to incidents. Methods: We developed and piloted an electronic on call pack in Hertfordshire for use at the health protection unit level containing key local and national guidelines, contact information and useful references. The on-call pack was initially piloted using a laptop and more recently using a personal digital assistant (PDA). The use of the on-call pack was evaluated. Results: Key advantages of the electronic system include reduced size, faster access to information that is clearly indexed and the relative ease of updating information. As part of the pilot, the electronic on call pack was presented to a local and regional training meeting with good response from participants using qualitative and quantitative methods. Conclusion: It is anticipated that with suitable evaluation this system can be adapted and utilised by other health protection practitioners. This system provides a fast, reliable and easily maintained source of information for the public health on-call team

    We undertook a systematic literature and database review for reports of nosocomial exposures of infants less than 24 months of age to tuberculosis. We found 7 instances of transmission among 4867 babies in 26 reports (19 published, 7 from a national database for reporting such events)

    Extensive transmission of Mycobacterium tuberculosis amongst children on a school bus

    We report a tuberculosis outbreak in school children caused by exposure to a sputum-smear positive school bus driver. Exposed children were assessed using 2 versions of interferon-gamma release assays. Fifty-five percent (18/34) had a positive interferon-gamma release assays and 4 children developed tuberculosis. This suggests that transmission may be very efficient in this setting and highlights the need for early diagnosis

    SMA-SH: Modified styrene maleic acid copolymer for functionalization of lipid nanodiscs

    Challenges in purification and subsequent functionalization of membrane proteins often complicate their biochemical and biophysical characterization. Purification of membrane proteins generally involves replacing the lipids surrounding the protein with detergent molecules, which can affect protein structure and function. Recently, it was shown that styrene–maleic acid copolymers (SMA) can dissolve integral membrane proteins from biological membranes into nanosized discs. Within these nanoparticles, proteins are embedded in a patch of their native lipid bilayer that is stabilized in solution by the amphipathic polymer that wraps the disc like a bracelet. This approach for detergent-free purification of membrane proteins has the potential to greatly simplify purification but does not facilitate conjugation of functional compounds to the membrane proteins. Often, such functionalization involves laborious preparation of protein variants and optimization of labeling procedures to ensure only minimal perturbation of the protein. Here, we present a strategy that circumvents several of these complications through modifying SMA by grafting the polymer with cysteamine. The reaction results in SMA that has solvent-exposed sulfhydrils (SMA-SH) and allows tuning of the coverage with SH groups. Size exclusion chromatography, dynamic light scattering, and transmission electron microscopy demonstrate that SMA-SH dissolves lipid bilayer membranes into lipid nanodiscs, just like SMA. In addition, we demonstrate that, just like SMA, SMA-SH solubilizes proteoliposomes into protein-loaded nanodiscs. We covalently modify SMA-SH-lipid nanodiscs using thiol-reactive derivatives of Alexa Fluor 488 and biotin.
