No full textThis oral history of T. Franklin Williams, M.D. (1921-2011) was conducted by William H. Barker, M.D. in April 1997. Dr. Williams discusses his early training in organic chemistry (B.S. 1942, M.S. 1943); his decision to pursue a medical degree after serving in the U.S. Navy; his training at Harvard Medical School (M.D., 1950); the early influence of his wife Carter Catlett Williams, a social worker, on his attitude toward health care; his residency at the Johns Hopkins Hospital; his early interest in metabolic disease on the staff of the North Carolina Memorial Hospital; the Williams' involvement in the civil rights movement in Chapel Hill; the decision to accept a position as medical director at Monroe Community Hospital, Rochester, N.Y.; the influence of Kodak executive Marion Folsom on health care planning in Rochester; his growing interest in geriatric medicine; his career as director of the National Institute on Aging (1983-1991); and the decision to return to Monroe Community Hospital and the University of Rochester Medical Center. The interview concludes with Dr. Williams' reflections on the unusual culture at Monroe Community Hospital and the prospects of health care for the elderly at the millenium
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
Get PDFThe present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
