    Death in the poetry of Dylan Thomas

    Dissertação (mestrado) - Universidade Federal de Santa Catarina, Centro de Comunicação e ExpressãoO propósito desta dissertação é analisar as atitudes de Dylan Thomas perante a morte, expressas em dezoito de seus poemas, e compará-las com a tradição cristã protestante, buscando pontos de similaridade e pontos de divergência. O tema da morte é importante e central na poesia de Dylan Thomas. Em minha análise eu concluo que os poemas de Dylan Thomas apresentam uma atitude ambígua diante da morte, algumas vezes sugerindo uma certa resistência, às vezes sugerindo uma calma aceitação, sempre expressa em termos de metáforas e alusões à tradição cristã. A visão de Dylan Thomas da morte pode ser basicamente entendida em termos de uma reabsorção do indivíduo nos elementos da natureza, contrastando assim com a noção cristã de ressurreicão da carne. No primeiro capítulo eu apresento a visão cristã da morte conforme é descrita na Bíblia, na teologia de Martinho Lutero, em João Calvino, e na filosofia de Soren Kierkegaard, mostrando que a visão cristã da morte é resultado de um longo desenvolvimanto histórico. No segundo capítulo apresento a análise dos poamas de Dylan Thomas, tentando focalizar suas atitudes diante da morte do outro, da morte do eu, e da morte da raca humana. E na conclusão apresento uma comparação entre as atitudes de Dylan Thomas e os valores da tradição cristã, mostrando que o poeta usa símbolos e conceitos cristãos mas que os reinterpreta de acordo com sua visão da vida e da morte, e de acordo também com seus propósitos estéticos

    Quadratic Time-Space Lower Bounds for Computing Natural Functions with a Random Oracle

    We define a model of size-S R-way branching programs with oracles that can make up to S distinct oracle queries over all of their possible inputs, and generalize a lower bound proof strategy of Beame [SICOMP 1991] to apply in the case of random oracles. Through a series of succinct reductions, we prove that the following problems require randomized algorithms where the product of running time and space usage must be Omega(n^2/poly(log n)) to obtain correct answers with constant nonzero probability, even for algorithms with constant-time access to a uniform random oracle (i.e., a uniform random hash function): - Given an unordered list L of n elements from [n] (possibly with repeated elements), output [n]-L. - Counting satisfying assignments to a given 2CNF, and printing any satisfying assignment to a given 3CNF. Note it is a major open problem to prove a time-space product lower bound of n^{2-o(1)} for the decision version of SAT, or even for the decision problem Majority-SAT. - Printing the truth table of a given CNF formula F with k inputs and n=O(2^k) clauses, with values printed in lexicographical order (i.e., F(0^k), F(0^{k-1}1), ..., F(1^k)). Thus we have a 4^k/poly(k) lower bound in this case. - Evaluating a circuit with n inputs and O(n) outputs. As our lower bounds are based on R-way branching programs, they hold for any reasonable model of computation (e.g. log-word RAMs and multitape Turing machines)

    ‘This is what Salvation must be like after a While’: Bob Dylan’s Critical Utopia

    Bob Dylan’s work has frequently been the object of discussion, debate and scholarly research. It has been commented on in terms of interpretation of the lyrics of his songs, of their musical treatment, and of the distinctiveness of Dylan’s performance style, while Dylan himself has been treated both as an important figure in the world of popular music, and also as an artist, as a significant poet. In his prolific output Dylan deals with a number of recurring themes, which he constantly revisits and develops. One of these themes is the perpetual search for salvation, which runs throughout his entire work, while at the same time taking significantly different forms. I argue in this dissertation that Dylan’s search for salvation takes place within a distinct range of different contexts, which include the longing for social salvation, the striving towards individual fulfilment, the desire for salvation through romantic relationships, and the constant journey towards an idealized place that will bring about a sense of salvation and redemption, while at the same time the idea of religious salvation in a more general sense can also be seen as hovering over all of these more specific contexts. I aim to demonstrate that Dylan’s search for salvation has a strongly utopian character, a search for something characterized by hope, but which, however close it might seem to be, is nevertheless not achieved in reality. Drawing on approaches derived in part from the critical theorist Ernst Bloch and also on more recent writers on the concept of Utopia, I argue that it is through this utopian dimension that Dylan’s work also functions as critique. Dylan, in showing the world’s situation as it should be shows us simultaneously the way it actually is, and it is the gulf between these two that functions as critique

    Evaluation of Uncertainty in Temporal Waveforms of Microwave Transistors

    We evaluate the uncertainty in on-wafer vector-calibrated nonlinear measurements with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) Microwave Uncertainty Framework. We include in our analysis uncertainties in the passive calibration standards, power meter, NIST-traceable phase calibration reference, cable bending, and probe alignment. These uncertainties are propagated first to the electrical quantities across the terminals of the device-under-test, which was an on-wafer microwave transistor. Next, we propagate uncertainties to the transistor current-generator plane, whose temporal voltage/current waveforms and impedances are of interest for the design of power amplifiers

    Unexpected Phenotype Reversion and Survival in a Zebrafish Model of Multiple Sulfatase Deficiency.

    Multiple sulfatase deficiency (MSD) is a rare recessively inherited Mendelian disorder that manifests with developmental delay, neurodegeneration, skeletal deformities, facial dysmorphism, congenital growth retardation, and other clinical signs. The disorder is caused by mutations in the SUMF1 gene, which encodes the formylglycine-generating enzyme (FGE), and responsible for the activation of sulfatases. Mutations in SUMF1 result in reduced or absent FGE function with consequent compromised activities of its client sulfatases. This leads to an accumulation of enzyme substrates, such as glycosaminoglycans and sulfolipids, within lysosomes and subsequently impaired lysosome function and cellular pathology. Currently, there are no disease modifying therapeutic options for MSD patients, hence the need for more suitable animal models to investigate the disorder. Here, we describe the characterisation of a sumf1 null zebrafish model, which has negligible sulfatase activity. Our sumf1 -/- zebrafish model successfully recapitulates the pathology of MSD such as cranial malformation, altered bone development, an enlarged population of microglia, and growth retardation during early development but lacks early lethality of mouse Sumf1 -/- models. Notably, we provide evidence of recovery in MSD pathology during later developmental stages, resulting in homozygous mutants that are viable. Hence, our data suggest the possibility of a unique compensatory mechanism that allows the sumf1 -/- null zebrafish to survive better than human MSD patients and mouse Sumf1 -/- models

    Unmaking the remake: Lacanian psychoanalysis, Deleuzian logic, and the problem of repetition in Hollywood cinema

    Repetition is inherent to cinema. From the complex interweaving of genre cycles andHollywood stars to the elementary mechanism of film projection (twenty-four times persecond): cinema is repetition. It is perhaps little wonder then that psychoanalysis is oftenthought of as one of the discourses with which to write about film in the 20th century.However, this thesis problematises both cinematic repetition and psychoanalytic film theory,stressing that each is haunted by a spectre: the remake, and the film-philosophy of GillesDeleuze, respectively. Despite its critical opprobrium, I explore the remake not only as aviable object of cinematic scholarship, but one necessary in moving past the impasse of filmstudies identified by Timothy Corrigan (1991) as ‘historical hysteria’. My research turns toDeleuzian film theory as a counterpart, rather than replacement, of the predominant Lacanianmodel. This is, however, neither a defence of the remake nor of psychoanalysis, but, rather, anattempt to submit both to a radical reassessment that, as Lacan says, aims at giving you a‘kick up the arse’ (1998:49).Eschewing the ‘example’ as a remnant of film theory’s current collapse in form, I suggest two‘case studies’ for consideration, augmented by a cache of film references: (1) Gus Van Sant’sshot-for-shot remake (1998) of Alfred Hitchcock’s original Psycho (1960) as a ‘symptom’ ofHollywood’s self-cannibalisation; and (2) George Sluizer’s The Vanishing (1993), aHollywood ‘auto-remake’ of his own Dutch original, Spoorloos (1988), as a ‘fetish’ ofHollywood’s desire in the European ‘Other’. Rather than expose Deleuze to a Lacanianframework I subject the one to a reading of the other in a möbius relation, turning theminside-out, so to speak. Mediating these two thinkers is Slavoj Žižek, a cultural theorist whoseown ‘filmosophy’ is revealed from amongst his often frenetic writings. In so doing, I expose adark underside to Hollywood repetition, one which provides some new tools forunderstanding the popularity of cinema’s most critically neglected discourse

    CONFORMAL PERTURBATIONS AND LOCAL SMOOTHING

    The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of conformal perturbations on the local smoothing effect for the Schrödinger equation on surfaces of revolution. The paper [CW13] studied the Schrödinger equation on surfaces of revolution with one trapped orbit. The dynamics near this trapping were unstable, but degenerately so. Beginning from the metric g from these papers, we consider the perturbed metric g_s = e^sf g, where f is a smooth, compactly supported function. If s is small enough and finitely many derivatives of f satisfy an appropriate bound, then we show that a local smoothing estimate still holds.Doctor of Philosoph

    An outdoor educator’s self-study of enacting a pedagogical model for outdoor adventure education to facilitate affective learning experiences

    Background: Outdoor Adventure Education (OAE) has a long history of being associated with the facilitation of affective learning experiences. This research explores this relationship between OAE and the facilitation of affective learning experiences by enacting a pedagogical model. This inquiry was prompted by the publication of two papers in Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy–‘A new pedagogical model for adventure in curriculum’ [Williams, A., and N. Wainwright. 2016a. “A New Pedagogical Model for Adventure in the Curriculum: Part One–Advocating for the Model.” Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy 21 (5): 481–500. doi:10.1080/17408989.2015.1048211; Williams, A., and N. Wainwright. 2016b. “A New Pedagogical Model for Adventure in the Curriculum: Part Two–Outlining the Model.” Physical Education and Sport Pedagogy 21 (6): 589–602. doi:10.1080/17408989.2015.1048212]. Purpose: Two research questions were developed for this exploration: (i) What are the realities of enacting a pedagogical model for OAE?; and (ii) When facilitating a programme for OAE, what affective learning experiences emerge and what are the processes involved in their facilitation? Method: A self-study methodology was used for this research and was guided by LaBoskey’s [2004. “The Methodology of Self-Study and Its Theoretical Underpinnings.” In International Handbook of Self-Study, of Teaching and Teacher Education Practices, edited by J. Loughran, M. L. Hamilton, V. K. LaBoskey, and T. Russell, 817–869. Dordrecht: Springer] approach to self-study. Ciaran (first author)–a facilitator of OAE programmes–conducted a self-study of their enactment of the pedagogical model for OAE in facilitating affective learning outcomes/experiences. Data sources included reflective journal entries and micro (a co-instructor of OAE) and macro (Dylan [second author]) critical friend meetings. Data was analysed following Charmaz’s [2014. Constructing Grounded Theory. Sage] approach to data analysis. Findings: The findings are captured in three categories: (i) Handing over the control to the students: realities of enacting a pedagogical model for OAE; (ii) The importance of creating an environment where affective learning can occur; and (iii) The potential of the pedagogical model for the creation of an environment where affective learning can be facilitated. Discussion: Throughout the findings, examples and considerations are given where the ‘non-negotiables’ of the pedagogical model for OAE can support and/or enhance and/ or facilitate affective learning outcomes/experiences of motivation, emotional responses, self-concept, and resilience [Teraoka, E., H.
