    Comparative Fishing Between the R/V Wilfred Templeman and the C/V Playa De Menduiña in the NAFO Divisions 3NO in May 2001

    Following the recommendations of the 2000 Scientific Council Meeting, this year was conducted for second time a comparative fishing (Paz et al. 2000) between Canadian and Spanish Survey vessels in the Grand Bank (NAFO Div. 3NO) during 21 to 23 of May 2001. Although this year three ships were involved in the comparative experience, this paper presents only the results of the comparison between C/V Playa de Menduiña and R/V Wilfred Templeman. This paper presents the results of this 2001 comparative fishing from the Spanish vessel and the catches by set for the Canadian vessel. In addition, are presented the catches in weight and in number for the main species corresponding to both Spanish and Canadian vessels in the 2000-01 comparative fishing exercises

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

    A Review of the Morid Fish Genus <i>Lepidion</i> of the North Atlantic With First Records of <i>Lepidion eques</i> from the Western North Atlantic

    Seventeen specimens of Lepidion eques (Günther) taken by the Fisheries Research Board of Canada St. John's, Nfld., Biological Station are apparently the first records of the species from the western Atlantic west of West Greenland. Comparison with specimens from the northeast Atlantic shows some differences in averages of meristic and morphometric characters, but with overlapping ranges in these characters.Comparison of these North Atlantic L. eques with the Mediterranean Lepidion lepidion (Risso) revealed that although closely related, these species are separable on the bases of the smaller orbit diameter in relation to the head length and especially by the relatively larger postorbital length in L. lepidion. Lepidion guentheri (Giglioli) is distinctly different from these two species in some meristic and many morphometric characters. Lectotypes of L. eques and L. guentheri are designated. Various incorrect or doubtful records of Lepidion are discussed. Two giant lepidions reported recently from the northeast Atlantic as L. guentheri are tentatively assigned to Lepidion schmidti Svetovidov, a species hitherto known only from Japan.The distributions of the North Atlantic species of Lepidion are discussed and information is provided on sexual maturity. </jats:p

    First Records of the Gymnoblastic Hydroid, <i>Ichthyocodium sarcotretis</i>, on the Copepod, <i>Sphyrion lumpi</i>, from Redfish of the Northwest Atlantic

    The gymnoblastic colonial hydroid Ichthyocodium sarcotretis was found on the copepod Sphyrion lumpi on redfish from three areas of the northwest Atlantic: on copepods (three of ten) on deepwater redfish (Sebastes mentella) from about 200–500 m over great depths at the mouth of the Labrador Sea and, in bottom otter trawling, on copepods on S. mentella or possibly S. fasciatus from the Labrador Shelf (6 of 686) and the northeast Newfoundland Shelf (1 of 364). None were found on 492 S. lumpi from redfish taken on the continental shelf south and west of the northeast Newfoundland Shelf.The characteristics of the hydroid colonies and of their feeding polyps and reproductive hydranths and medusae are compared with published information on this hydroid found on the same hosts in the Irminger Sea and on the copepod, Sarcotretes scopeli, on the lantern fish, Benthosema glaciale, in the North Atlantic. The incidence of the hydroid on S. lumpi on redfish may possibly help in distinguishing Sebastes species in the northwest Atlantic. </jats:p

    Tagging of 279 spiny dogfish (Squalus acanthias) near St. John's, Newfoundland, July 9 to 23, 1942, gave 5 per cent recaptures: 4 returns in 1942, 5 in 1943 and, apart from 1946, one in each successive year until 1949. Eight recaptures were from Newfoundland, 3 from the Maritime Provinces, 2 from Gloucester, Massachusetts, and one from Virginia. </jats:p

    A female specimen of Lagocephalus lagocephalus (L.), 60 cm long, was collected alive on Aug. 26, 1961 on the beach at Point Verde, Placentia Bay, Newfoundland, 47°14′N, 54°01′W. This is apparently the first record of this species in the western Atlantic. </jats:p

    Nine specimens of the rare fish Lipogenys gilli Goode and Bean, 1895, previously known from a single specimen taken off Maryland in 1887, were taken between 1957 and 1970 along the continental slope of the Nova Scotian Shelf to southwestern Grand Bank, at depths of about 400–800 m. These specimens, 238–375 mm in standard length, have a remarkably low variation in vertebral number (228–234). From the additional specimens the description of the species is considerably extended. </jats:p

    In relation to total length of body, the longer carapace and the accessory copulatory appendage of the male and the longer fourth swimmeret of the female are seen in the immature but develop further during and after sexual maturity. The small sternal spines and long second swimmeret of the female and the wider carapace of the male develop with sexual maturity and become more pronounced with increase in body size. </jats:p
