wilde, wilder muot, wildekeit: Bildgebende Verfahren und wilde-Metaphorik im Minnesang

Abstract: The aim of this article is to investigate some of the uses of the term wilde in medieval German love lyric (Minnesang). While it is not a poetological term per se, the oscillating meanings of this word attract metaphorical and allegorical tropes: Employed in metaphorical or allegorical expressions of the paradoxes of minne (love), it also occurs when falconry symbolism is used to illustrate erotic attraction and the interplay of nature and culture in the Minnesang's love concepts. In the case of Ulrich von Gutenburg, wilde refers to a free and unrestrained state the self leaves behind because of the overwhelming effect of love. In a song by the Schulmeister von Esslingen, the many nuances of wilde's meaning are used for word play and rhetorical effects. The main part of the paper focuses on Burkhard von Hohenfels and Reinmar: While Reinmar casts the disconcerting self-alienation of the loving self in images of falconry and the falcon's wish to soar, Burkhard uses the oscillating meanings of wilde for imaginative and creative reformulations of minne against the backdrop of dynamic falconry scenarios. Both authors use this imagery to talk about the dissociation of the (male) self, finding itself in a state of (unrequited) minne fixation; thus, this poetic imagery serves as a means of imaging, making visible inner processes of the loving self
