    Generalization of Two-Sided Length Biased Inverse Gaussian Distributions and Applications

    The notion of length-biased distribution can be used to develop adequate models. Length-biased distribution was known as a special case of weighted distribution. In this work, a new class of length-biased distribution, namely the two-sided length-biased inverse Gaussian distribution (TS-LBIG), was introduced. The physical phenomenon of this scenario was described in a case of cracks developing from two sides. Since the probability density function of the original TS-LBIG distribution cannot be written in a closed-form expression, its generalization form was further introduced. Important properties such as the moment-generating function and survival function cannot be provided. We offered a different approach to solving this problem. Some distributional properties were investigated. The parameters were estimated by the method of the moment. Monte Carlo simulation studies were carried out to appraise the performance of the suggested estimators using bias, variance, and mean square error. An application of a real dataset was presented for illustration. The results showed that the suggested estimators performed better than the original study. The proposed distribution provided a more appropriate model than other candidate distributions for fitting based on Akaike information criterion

    Wald Intervals via Profile Likelihood for the Mean of the Inverse Gaussian Distribution

    The inverse Gaussian distribution, known for its flexible shape, is widely used across various applications. Existing confidence intervals for the mean parameter, such as profile likelihood, reparametrized profile likelihood, and Wald-type reparametrized profile likelihood with observed Fisher information intervals, are generally effective. However, our simulation study identifies scenarios where the coverage probability falls below the nominal confidence level. Wald-type intervals are widely used in statistics and have a symmetry property. We mathematically derive the Wald-type profile likelihood (WPL) interval and the Wald-type reparametrized profile likelihood with expected Fisher information (WRPLE) interval and compare their performance to existing methods. Our results indicate that the WRPLE interval outperforms others in terms of coverage probability, while the WPL typically yields the shortest interval. Additionally, we apply these proposed intervals to a real dataset, demonstrating their potential applicability to other datasets that follow the IG distribution

    Properties and Maximum Likelihood Estimation of the Novel Mixture of Fréchet Distribution

    In recent decades, there have been numerous endeavors to develop a novel category of survival distributions possessing enhanced flexibility through the extension of existing distributions. This article constructs and validates the statistical properties of a novel survival distribution in order to obtain an alternative distribution that is suitable for analyzing survival data by presenting the novel mixture of the Fréchet distribution along with statistical properties such as the probability density function (PDF), cumulative distribution function (CDF), rth ordinary moment, skewness, kurtosis, moment-generating function, mean, variance, mode, survival function, hazard function, and asymptotic behavior, as well as constructing the estimators of the unknown parameter by employing the expectation-maximization (EM) algorithm, and simulated annealing. Additionally, the performance of the proposed estimators was compared with bias, mean squared errors (MSE), and simulated variances, and given an illustrative example of the proposed distribution to the survival data set in order to show that the proposed distribution is appropriate for the right-skewed data. This will be extremely advantageous in survival analysis

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.
