This textbook is a project under development by our Biology faculty to ultimately provide students with all the factual information they need to succeed in the BIOL 1103 and BIOL 1109 courses at Douglas College in BC, Canada. The text focuses on directly addressing the Course Objectives defined for the 2 courses covering the most important concepts and aiming to minimize distracting students with more minor details.
The development choices for this textbook were made with the guidance of hundreds of faculty who are deeply involved in teaching this course. These choices led to innovations in art, terminology, career orientation, practical applications, and multimedia-based learning, all with a goal of increasing relevance to students. We strove to make the discipline meaningful and memorable to students, so that they can draw from it a working knowledge that will enrich their future studies.
Readers should be aware that the information herein is subject to change at any time as corrections, additions, or other important modifications are made. Only the most recent version will be considered to be complete and correct.

An Economic Case for Land Reform
Land reform is concerned with intervention in the prevailing pattern of land ownership, control, and usage. In the case of land, which is freely traded in the open market, the UK Treasury supports government intervention when some form of market failure has been diagnosed, and if measures to correct for market failure can be shown to be cost-e!ective. Although market failure has been the subject of intense research e!ort in the "eld of environmental and health economics, its potential role in land markets has not been examined. With the prospect of new land reform legislation following closely on the creation of the Scottish Parliament, there is therefore, a need to explore the economic case for intervention in the land market based on market failure. The conclusions, based on the four case studies, are first that market failure is found to be present in the ownership and management of land, and second, that much could be accomplished without the need for new legislation or signi"cant public "nancing. Although this paper has focused on Scotland and the context for land reform demands di!ers throughout the world, one conclusion of global relevance is that market failure, rather than the free-market per se is a more likely cause of social unrest over land. This can perhaps be best illustrated by local
land monopolies and the barriers that they can create for poorer members of society seeking access to the land resource
Finding magic squares with Douglas—Rachford algorithm
In this expository paper, we show how to use the Douglas—Rachford algorithm as a successful heuristic for finding magic squares. The Douglas—Rachford algorithm is an iterative projection method for solving feasibility problems. Although its convergence is only guaranteed in the convex setting, the algorithm has been successfully applied to a number of similar nonconvex problems, such as solving Sudoku puzzles. We present two formulations of the nonconvex feasibility problem of finding magic squares, which are inspired by those of Sudoku, and test the Douglas—Rachford algorithm on them.The first author was supported by MINECO of Spain and ERDF of EU, as part of the Ramón y Cajal program (RYC-2013-13327) and Grants MTM2014-59179-C2-1-P and PGC2018-097960-B-C22
The influence of site conditions on <i>Senecio sylvaticus</i> seasonal abundance, soil moisture dynamics, and Douglas-fir seedling water stress
Competition for soil water resources between newly planted Douglas-fir seedlings and aggressive early-seral plants, such as Senecio sylvaticus [L.] (Senecio), can create drought conditions that impact tree seedling physiology, growth, and likelihood of mortality. However, the specific impact of Senecio on soil moisture dynamics and inducement of water stress in newly planted tree seedlings across varying site conditions has not been quantified. This study quantified these interactions at three contrasting sites across the U.S. Pacific Northwest: the Coastal Range, the Cascade foothills, and the fringe of south-central valley of Western Oregon. We tested whether competition between Senecio and Douglas-fir seedlings for soil water resources in areas of high Senecio abundance caused increased water stress in the tree seedlings. Senecio demonstrated a high degree of plasticity across sites increasing its lifespan and shoot:root in response to increased soil water resources. Senecio also had more than twice the root area of influence as Douglas-fir. Overall, greater Senecio abundance was associated with greater soil moisture depletion and this soil moisture depletion was correlated with increased Douglas-fir water stress. The magnitude of this response varied across sites; the dry site had the greatest shifts in Senecio biomass partitioning, the highest observable water depletion, and the greatest amount of Douglas-fir water stress. The presented results can be useful for determining effective forest vegetation management regimes by considering the impact of Senecio presence on Douglas-fir seedling drought stress across different site conditions.</p
The Douglas-Peucker line simplification algorithm
The aim of this paper is to introduce the reader to one theme in digital cartography, namely line simplification. The paper describes the technique developed by David Douglas and Thomas Peucker in 1973. The reader is encouraged to experiment with data of their own choice using software supplied in the appendices, and provide feedback on the performance of this algorithm. -Author

Author's personal copy Can Douglas fir (Pseudotsuga menziesii (MIRB.) FRANCO) sustainably grow in complex forest structures?

The sustainability of shade-intermediate tree species such as Douglas fir in complex forest structures (with more than two distinct storeys) has been controversially discussed for a long time and traditionally shade-tolerant tree species have been preferred in plenter forest management. The most critical question in this context is whether recruitment trees of a particular species can survive in the shady conditions of the understorey and whether they can contribute to a demographic continuity. Using data from the unique, replicated monitoring site Artist's Wood in North Wales (UK) we investigated the recruitment dynamics of Douglas fir to address the question whether this species can grow in complex forest structures on a long-term basis. Then we compared the results with those from Norway spruce and silver fir plenter forests in the Swiss Jura. Demographic continuity in complex structures is ensured if all forest development stages are represented in appropriate demographic proportions. We quantified these development stages in terms of stem diameter classes and analysed the corresponding diameter growth, competition and the loss of trees due to mortality and forest management. Based on this analysis we determined demographic equilibrium conditions for Artist's Wood. The results confirmed that Douglas fir at Artist's Wood can indeed grow sustainably in complex forest structures at a stand density of 27.4 m 2 ha À1 basal area which corresponds to a standing volume of 342 m 3 ha À1 . However, equilibrium conditions for Douglas fir can only be achieved at the expense of a lower overall stand density of approximately 85% of that of Norway spruce. Despite this the corresponding Douglas fir stand volume increment of 15.3 m 3 ha À1 year À1 is greater than that of Norway spruce. Thus Douglas fir plenter forests are not only possible but are also appealing considering the broad site amplitude of the species in conjunction with ongoing climate change and the potential of the species for CO 2 retention
The cyclic Douglas–Rachford algorithm with r-sets-Douglas–Rachford operators
The Douglas–Rachford (DR) algorithm is an iterative procedure that uses sequential reflections onto convex sets and which has become popular for convex feasibility problems. In this paper we propose a structural generalization that allows to use r-sets-DR operators in a cyclic fashion.
