    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     ESTIMATING THE IMPACT OF CULTURAL VARIATION ON EPIDEMIC BEHAVIOR

    Ebola was discovered in 1976 (WHO, 2015). It has killed many people throughout history, but the 2014 West Africa epidemic was an apocalypse-sized outbreak. This epidemic would have harvested lives five times more than the lives that all known Ebola epidemic has harvested combined (BBC, 2015). At a basic level, the success of interventions depends on behavioral responses to disease conditions, as well as risk perception and cultural norms that might conflict with interventions. Such sociological conditions can be very fluid, influenced by circumstances on the ground as well as the evolution of opinions within the community. Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea have a unique combination of geographic, sociocultural and political factors (Walker & Whitty, 2015). Those factors combined together in one region formed an ideal environment for the epidemic to explode. The absence of accurate critical data did not help to understand the dynamics of the epidemic and created a hazed and unclear picture of the situation and the conditions that helped the Ebola outbreak to evolve. Unfortunately, most models of emerging epidemics do not account for cultural variation which impacts the case incidence within and across affected countries. This thesis begins to the fill the gap in understanding how sociocultural characteristics can affect the dynamics of an emerging infectious disease. To accomplish this, we focused on Liberia as a case study.     A Bayesian Hierarchical Poisson Approach to Estimate County Level Suicide Risks in Idaho

    Suicide is defined as the act of causing harm to oneself with the goal of dying is a growing public health concern. It tends to claim the lives of both the old and young. According to the World Health Organization, an estimated number of 800,000800,000 people have been reported to die each year by suicide. Most published literature are concerned with the rate of suicide but not much work has been done in determining how certain populations or interest groups are at risk of suicide beyond the broad classification of rural and urban. As a result, this work aimed at estimating suicide relative risk levels in all counties in Idaho using a statistical model. Each county's risk obtained is relative to the entire population. Specifically, a Bayesian hierarchical Poisson was used to get these estimates. Custer and Madison counties were found to have the highest and lowest relative risks respectively when age was unadjusted. After age adjustment, Clark county had the highest relative risk and Ada had the lowest relative risk. Average unemployment rates were compared with the relative risks the answer the question of possible causation. From the results, unemployment rates cannot be concluded as the sole cause of high/low suicide relative risks as some high risk areas had average or low unemployment rates.masters, M.S., Statistical Sciences -- University of Idaho - College of Graduate Studies, 2019-0

    An Exploration into the Delicate Balance of Soil Microbial Community Interactions

    Fiber reinforced polymer (FRP) is a lightweight building material which provides a low weight-to-strength ratio. Applications in civil engineering include providing a lightweight alternative to steel reinforcement in concrete, as well as to stiffen wood, etc. However, there has been no study to determine methods to alter FRP so that it satisfies the International Building Code's (IBC) standards for fire-resistance. Therefore, this thesis' goal is to determine a method of altering the resin in FRP to achieve the fire resistance standards of the IBC. In order to do this, different additives were tested for flame-spread, time to ignition and time to self-extinguish, and then the optimal additive was selected and tested for its effects on the mechanical properties of the composite. From this, it was found that adding 25% Alumina-Tri-Hydrate by weight satisfies the fire-resistive standards while only slightly reducing the mechanical properties of the composite.Thesis (M.S., Statistical Sciences) -- University of Idaho, 201

    Application of Hierarchical Bayes to Estimate Relative Risk of Suicide in Idaho Counties

    Suicide is the intention of harming oneself to cause death. Idaho is amongst the states with growing rates of suicide deaths and suicide is a major public health issue. Most studies conducted on suicide have investigated suicide rates at state levels but not small areas such as counties or demographic groups. This study was conducted to develop a reliable model to characterize suicide at the county level. \par Relative risk of suicide for all counties in Idaho were obtained using Poisson hierarchical Bayes model and the performance was compared to standardized mortality ratio estimates. Relative risk estimates obtained using Poisson hierarchical Bayes had low standard errors compared to the relative risk estimates obtained using standardized mortality ratio. These estimates allowed us to observe that age adjusted relative risk of suicide was consistently above that of the state of Idaho in Custer, Lemhi, Shoshone and Nez Perce. Also, Madison was the only county with age adjusted relative risk of suicide consistently below the state of Idaho over the time period. \par County level suicide risk factors such as unemployment, education and social connectivity could be incorporated into the model to predict relative risk of suicide. Unfortunately, after the data collection is complete, data often is not made available to other researchers. In order to promote reproducible research as well as re-use of existing data, there is growing trend of data sharing. Documentation is one of the important aspects of data sharing which is used to aid in the understanding and reuse of shared data. The importance of what type of documentation to include for secondary analysis is vital especially documentation about the design of the study.
