Dr. Armando Alonzo will speak to UTRGV students in Dr. Jamie Starling’s HIST 6325: Seminar in Borderlands History course as well as students from HIST 3300, HIST 3333, and HIST 4399. Interested faculty are also invited to attend. Dr. Alonzo’s presentation will focus on researching the South Texas Borderlands in Spanish, Mexican, and Texas archives as well as the challenges of studying the region’s earlier Spanish colonial era and Native American history. A native of the Rio Grande Valley, Dr. Alonzo received his M.A. degree in history in 1983 from what was then the University of Texas – Pan American, where he wrote his thesis on “A History of the Mexicans in the Lower Rio Grande Valley of Texas: Their Role in Land Development and Commercial Agriculture, 1900-1930.” Dr. Alonzo earned a Ph.D. in History from Indiana University in 1991 with a dissertation that focused on “Tejano Rancheros and Changes in Land Tenure, Hidalgo County, Texas, 1850-1900.” His book, Tejano Legacy: Rancheros and Settlers in South Texas, 1734-1900 was published by University of New Mexico Press in 1998. The author of numerous peer-reviewed articles and scholarly conference presentations, Dr. Alonzo is currently researching a transnational history of Texas and Northern Mexico between 1700 and 1865.https://scholarworks.utrgv.edu/rdavidson/1010/thumbnail.jp
Generally read as an ironic or playful exception, "Bando", instead, perfectly places itself in Corazzini’s poetical production, and can be considered an ideal achievement of it, also considering its relevant position in conclusion of "Libro per la sera della domenica", the last collection published by the author still alive. The human corruption of the auction milieu, the tensions to bestiality and self-loosing are the most remarkable aspects of this continuity with the rest of Corazzini’s poems, of which is purposed a fast but extended excursus, developed by a dialogue with crepuscular directions of Brazilian modernism, especially expressed by Manuel Bandeira. The agitation of the auction reverses itself in an useless prayer addressed to uninterested people; death, suicide, prostitution seem resurface from more than one verse, recalling the central experiences of Corazzini’s "Desolazione", "Dolcezze" and prose works. Only distin guishing, despite of the difficulty of lyric contest, an "I-auctioneer" and an "I lyricist", it is possible to define a double tone: on the one hand, the oratory plea of the desperate auctioneer; on the other hand, the lyric denunciation of a crisis which attacks, more than the dealing of ideas, their interest for an only potential public of bidders, that is mankind
Giovan Battista Oddoni fra idillio, lirica, tragedia e pastorale
Through archival sources and repertories this paper offers a biographical and bibliographical outline of Giovan Battista Oddoni, born in Varese and employed in Milan, Mantua and Turin from 1618 to 1630. The paper enlightens in particular on his academic and courtesan relations, especially with the Houses of Gonzaga and Visconti Borromeo from Lainate, then, after a forced transfer in Turin due to legal problems, with the House of Savoy. The paper also discusses the history of composition, structures and contents of "Idillii" (1618), the tragedy "Edemondo" (1621) and "Rime" (1623), published in Milan; of them, the paper shows the aspects encoded in the respective genres (with a raid on the history of seventeenth century’s idyll in Lombardy). Finally, the paper discusses the tragicomedy "Arione" (1628), published and performed in Turin, which is ascribed for the first time to the author (previously limited to the symbol "G.B.O." that appears in the frontispiece). The paper considers this ‘maritime fable’ for its courtesan, allegorical and didactic purposes, as well as for the reuse of expressive formulas and plot schemas taken from Oddoni’s previous literary experience
The Suq of Genoa is a large theater where every visitor is part of the audience of a collective, choral creation, and at the same time the author and protagonist of his/her own performance. The setting is a temporary bazaar in the Old Port, housing ethnic shops and restaurants, 53 in the latest “in-person” edition, managed by traders with a migratory background active in the city. The central square and some surrounding spaces host shows, concerts, debates, lessons, partly organized by migrant associations, partly selected by the artistic direction. For the visitor, the festival becomes a journey towards his/her own identity recognition, through the comparison with the Other. The visitor of the Suq, as an individual, is part of the aggregating community that he is building with his/her own presence, in the openness and recognition of the new: the feeling of belonging lasts the time of the festival, which unfortunately has never found the economic support necessary for an organic organizational growth, with a greater venue and/or a longer duration. Despite this limitation, the Suq has been recognized as a European Best Practice since 2014 and continues to be a successful experiment in creating community welfare
Using Infrared Technology to Examine Arousal in Brown Tufted Capuchin Monkeys (Sapajus [Cebus] apella)
From a well-being standpoint, having a reliable measure of emotion is important for species in captivity for the purpose of determining animal welfare. This holds especially true as habitat destruction is increasing, and there are more animals being held in captivity as a result. From a research standpoint, having a reliable measure of arousal can be particularly useful when performing certain experiments that require subjective experiences and quantifiable behaviors. Infrared Thermography (IRT) is a technology that could possibly aid scientists interested in studying emotions and arousal in animals mainly due to its advantage of non-invasiveness, and there is a growing amount of evidence supporting its validity.
Although multiple monkey taxa have been studied using IRT technology, there has been little to no research on brown tufted capuchins, Sapajus [Cebus] apella, thus far. Examining capuchin monkeys with IRT could help to further demonstrate the technology’s validity among all non-human primate (NHP) species. For Sapajus [Cebus] apella research specifically, having a reliable means of quantifying emotional states non-invasively could be valuable for future studies. Many experiments performed in this field currently depend on subjective behavioral cues to measure emotion and well-being. Having a valid and possibly automated tool like IRT to measure emotion could eliminate these potential errors and biases. In addition, IRT may be a useful tool when examining Sapajus [Cebus] apella welfare in captivity, and demonstrating this technology’s validity would allow for an improved measure of well-being for this species.
In this study, a procedure was created and performed in order to investigate the relationship between arousal and nasal temperature in capuchin monkeys.Undergraduat
