The bulk of the materials in this collection are drafts of articles by psychologist Dorit Whiteman on the experience of Holocaust survivors, including a full draft of the longer work "The Uprooted." Additional materials include some photocopies of personal papers belonging to her mother, Lillian Stern Bader. The manuscript "The Uprooted" was published as "The uprooted: a Hitler legacy. Voices of those who escaped before the 'final solution'" (New York: Plenum Press, 1993). Increasing Student Engagement With iPads

Increasing Student Engagement With IPADS Stanley B. Whiteman III, Ed.D. University of Pittsburgh, 2018 This is a study of one teacher’s technology integration journey. This case study will characterize the state of one teacher’s understanding and practice before and after receiving coaching that was designed to help the participant learn to use technology integration to increase student engagement. The results of this research led to three findings. The three findings from this research are: 1. The teacher demonstrated an improved understanding of engagement and technology integration. 2. The teacher demonstrated an improved practice of engagement and technology integration. 3. The findings help to determine the impact that coaching had on the understanding of student engagement and how to use iPads for instruction in the classroom. This study has shown, through professional development and coaching with incorporating technology, we can increase a teacher’s skill set for engaging students in the classrooms. By increasing student engagement, we increase the opportunity for students to learn and succeed. Our responsibility as leaders is to find ways to support our teachers and to get educational technologies into the hands of our students

Aisopos: Fables Told in Type and Ornament

    No full text
Here is a lovely book done under the direction of Gloria Kondrup and Heidrun Mumper-Drumm. The preface by Bruce Whiteman of the William Andrews Clark Memorial Library. Hand-bound by Alice Vaughan. Unpaginated. There are thirty-three pairs of pages, the first a nearly transparent page with the name of the student who did the design of the fable itself, which is on the second, underlying page. Many of the fable texts are straightforward. Several are not. Among those apart from the tradition is the third selection by Sarah Cathcart: I am Aesop, Gabriel, a Liar. I'll build my wings with paper, glue, and wire. I'll catch an updraft in the city tonight. I gotta be ready. You don't fuck around with flight. So there! D. Reagan Marshall gets the swirls of the 2 in the title 2 Crabs to represent the sideways walking of the two crabs. Soyoung Leah Kim's title The Fox with the Cropped Tail is itself cropped on the edge of the page. Clever! Dyna Kau does lovely work with designs and colors in a version of GA called Summertime. Emily Liu works with several highly expressive designs for her version of WC. A standard feature of the pages is a rectangular section in the upper left that usually contains the text of the story. Other things like the title and moral often fall outside this rectangle. Another favorite of mine is The Scorpion and the Frog by Christine Marie Montgomery. Ellen Wong's fable is new to me and very strong. I quote it without attending to its poetic form. Cartier a richman bought his wife a Cartier necklace every month. (Just for being beautiful) he said. One day, she observed a wrinkle above her right eye and decided to go under the knife. (For sure he will reward me wth an extra diamond) she thought. But with 1 cut of inexperience her face now sits lop-sided. And her husband now sits with another. Beauty is in the eye of the beholder (of the knife). I am so delighted to have found a copy of this book! This is a hardbound book (hard cover)Limited edition of 75 copiesArt Center College of Desig

MeSH term explosion and author rank improve expert recommendations

    No full text
Information overload is an often-cited phenomenon that reduces the productivity, efficiency and efficacy of scientists. One challenge for scientists is to find appropriate collaborators in their research. The literature describes various solutions to the problem of expertise location, but most current approaches do not appear to be very suitable for expert recommendations in biomedical research. In this study, we present the development and initial evaluation of a vector space model-based algorithm to calculate researcher similarity using four inputs: 1) MeSH terms of publications; 2) MeSH terms and author rank; 3) exploded MeSH terms; and 4) exploded MeSH terms and author rank. We developed and evaluated the algorithm using a data set of 17,525 authors and their 22,542 papers. On average, our algorithms correctly predicted 2.5 of the top 5/10 coauthors of individual scientists. Exploded MeSH and author rank outperformed all other algorithms in accuracy, followed closely by MeSH and author rank. Our results show that the accuracy of MeSH term-based matching can be enhanced with other metadata such as author rank

Model simulations of melting hydrometeors: a new lidar bright band from melting frozen drops

    No full text
This study provides a model simulation of lidar and radar echoes from melting frozen drops. Results are based on a concentric-sphere Mie scattering code, together with a melting layer model. Simulations reveal the appearance of a lidar bright band in the melting layer, as well as a fainter radar bright band. Both maxima are located approximately 300 m below the freezing level for a core/shell radius of 0.7. In order to achieve a more realistic representation of the melting process, preliminary simulations have also been obtained from an eccentric sphere Mie scattering code that are in general agreement with results obtained with the concentric sphere code. The sensitivity of the algorithms to changes in initial conditions is investigated

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    No full text
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

"Closing the R&D Gap, Evaluating the Sources of R&D Spending"

    No full text
Both spending and tax policies have been implemented in the United States with the goal of stimulating private sector research and development (R&D). Karier questions whether current R&D policy, especially the research and experimentation tax credit, can contribute to closing the gap between nondefense expenditures on R&D in the United States and such expenditures in other countries, such as Japan and Germany. He also explores possible changes to our current R&D policy to make it more effective.
