Jared Ailstock: Oil Paint Quality and Material
The paint quality
Portrait painter Jared Ailstock shares that the paint is composed of finely ground mineral or organic pigments, mixed with oil which hardens as it dries. There are different color qualities which correspond to the fineness of the pigments and their concentration. Jared Ailstock shares these qualities:
* The study quality is intended for painters who practice a lot. The colors are packaged in large tubes and the prices are more affordable.
* Extra fine grade is the oil with the highest pigment content. There is usually only one pigment ground with no chemical additives. The range of colors available is immense, it is the oil par excellence.
* Fine quality is quite simply between the previous two.
Jared Ailstock claims that in order to choose the quality that meets your needs, you should study the fine qualities that are strong enough for thick work while the extra-fine quality is recommended for fine applications where you will need a strong coloring power.
You can very well start with the extra fine quality and restrict yourself to a range of primary colors that will allow you to create all the others.
Jared Ailstock shares a choice of colors to obtain a complete color chart:
- a lemon yellow
- two reds: vermilion and dark madder
- an ultramarine blue + a Prussian blue
- two extra browns: ocher and burnt sienna
- a titanium white
- an ivory black
Black can be obtained by mixing: dark blue + dark red + yellow). Subsequently, depending on your needs, you can purchase more vivid colors.
The palette
Jared Ailstock shares there are classic wooden or plastic pallets.
You can also use:
* a white melamine board
* a sample of tiles
* disposable pallets to avoid the drudgery of cleaning
Jared Ailstock indicates that the advantage of oil painting is that you can leave your palette aside for several hours without the colors drying out.
If you are new to oil painting, practice good habits. On your palette, the order of colors will respect the chromatic circle: warm colors together and cool colors like blue or magenta on the other hand. For more information, visit Jared Ailstock’s profile on Speakerhub

[Letter] 1846 February 22, Cambridge (Mass.) [to] Geo. W. Greene / Jared Sparks.
Sparks confirms receipt of Greene\u27s letter and the manuscript from the Boston post office by the last steamer. Sparks requests that Greene make out a list of the contents of each chapter. Sparks recommends that Greene refrain from sending a duplicate of the manuscript until confirming the safe delivery of the original. American historian Jared Sparks wrote about the Early Republic period in American history, publishing on Benjamin Franklin, George Washington, and the American Revolution. He also wrote a _Life of Gouverneur Morris_ (1832), and was a professor at Harvard at the time this letter was written (1839-49); he would later assume the duties of President of Harvard (1849-53). The work alluded to here is _The Life of Nathanael Greene, Major-General in the Army of the Revolution_ (1867-71). George Washington Greene (1811-1883) was an author, educator and historian

The Privatization of Racial Responsibility: A Materialist Analysis of Contemporary White Antiracism Under Neoliberal Capitalism
Despite the myriad legislative accomplishments of the Modern Civil RightsMovement, structural racial inequality has remained an enduring feature of American
life. Tomes have been written attempting to explain why it is that racial inequality in the
so-called “post-Civil Rights Era” remains so intractable. Key explanations have centered
on the notion that although many white Americans have, since the 1960s, come to
express more liberal racial attitudes, they have often failed to support key politics that
would ostensibly create a more racially egalitarian society—a phenomenon referred to
as the principle-policy gap. This dissertation offers a historical materialist framework for
understanding the persistence of the principle-policy gap among white Americans—and
contemporary white antiracism more generally—which I term the privatization of racial
responsibility. Using historical narrative to show how political elites were instrumental in
setting the terms upon which contemporary antiracism rests, and experimental methods
to test the hypotheses generated by my theoretical framework, I elucidate the kinds of
antiracist behaviors white Americans who are sympathetic to racially egalitarian ideals
(in this case, white liberals) will engage in when they must either take responsibility for
themselves and their families or take responsibility for racial equality—an arrangement
which, I argue, is the primary source of the principle-policy gap among white liberal
Americans.</p
The limits of white liberal antiracism mean that combatting structural racial inequality must be about building power, not sympathy
In the wake of the police murder of George Floyd in May of 2020, many Americans took to the streets under the banner of “Black Lives Matter” to protest deep-seated racial injustices that, unfortunately, are commonplace in American society. Notably, an overwhelming number of white Americans also participated in the protests – but did this mean that they were finally ready to match their antiracist rhetoric with action? Jared Clemons, a scholar of Black political thought, provides a theoretical account of white antiracism, and argues that despite their antiracist sentiments, so long as white liberals are unwilling to sacrifice their own familial capital, meaningful antiracist strategies must seek to change the political-economic conditions in society that produce racial inequality

White Identity, Political Elites and Political Behaviour in Canada
SSHRC IDG awarded 2022: This research will identify (1) how white identity activation affects people’s political attitudes and behaviours; (2) which actors activate white identity, and how this can be mitigated; and (3) the mechanisms through which white identity activation takes place. We will conduct a mixedmethod study involving survey experiments and focus groups in Canada. Combining these two methods will allow for a deeper understanding of white identity activation at both the individual and group levels. The survey component of the project will use online experiments to identify (A) how white identity activation affects people’s attitudes towards policies that promote diversity, such as official multiculturalism and immigration; (B) whether politicians or interest groups most strongly activate white identity, and whether social desirability norms can mitigate this; and (C) how emotions and other attitudes mediate white identity activation. The focus groups will expose participants to similar tests as the surveys, but in a communal environment
