Holograph letter from P.J. Walsh, Archbishop's House, Dublin, to Hagan. Like the vice-rector [Curran] he has been suffering from influenza; a financial matter. Morrissey sustained an injury jumping over a ditch. Then sketching the Murray- White marriage case. The Congregation of the Sacraments suggested recourse to the civil courts for her to obtain perpetual separation; commenting this was odd; they have not given satisfaction for the last year and a half

Holograph letter from P.J. Walsh, Holy Cross College, Clonliffe, Dublin, to Hagan, acknowledging receipt of letter and document. Concerning the O'Donoghue case before the Congregation of Sacraments, naming the fee that they can afford to pay for the petitioner, 'a poor clerk'; expecting decision yet. Then settling payment of fees and of Mass intentions. Dempsey, Blanchardstown will not stay quiet for long; further comments. Promising confirmation concerning the archbishops' support for the new College site. Mentioning a pending matrimonial case, Murray versus White. Adding that the new American cardinals will be buzzing about for the next couple of weeks

An Algorithmic Approach to the Optimal Extraction of Signals from Intelligent Sensors

    No full text
This paper describes the development of an intelligent sensor architecture, where signal conditioning is performed onboard the sensor itself, in software. Our proposed architecture uses data-based models of the sensor for signal conditioning and fault detection, so that the sensor is robust to degradation and its processed output includes an estimate of uncertainty with each measurement value for higher level sensor management processes such as data fusion. We use a data-based kernel representation for the signal conditioning system, which avoids deriving physical models of the sensor from first principles. A sparse realisation of the kernel model provides fast predictions and opportunities for efficient updating of the sensor model to enable reconfiguration of the sensor model based on incoming data. We show that these techniques have the ability to detect degradation in a MEMS sensor, using elevated temperatures in laboratory conditions

Faultlines irish design research conference 2015: book of abstracts

Welcome to the Irish Design Research Conference 2015, an initiative of designCORE at the Dargan Centre, Institute of Technology Carlow. This all island and event has been cosponsored by ID2015 as part of Year of Irish Design. It aims to provide a national forum for current design researchers to disseminate emergent design research taking place within the discipline. Ireland is showing clear indications of economic recovery, and a policy objective for ID2015 is to achieve growth within the Irish design sector. This timely forum seeks to draw leading academic researchers, from across the disciplinary bandwidth, into a stimulating, challenging and rewarding interdisciplinary discourse. This can provide the growing Irish design research community, a means to engage with each other, exchange experiences and share insight. The conference theme, FAULTLINES-Bridging Knowledge Spaces seeks to explore the interstices between knowledge and practice. For cross-disciplinary relevance, the sessions address the more global themes of how design research can inform policy, impact society and find intervention in industry. The importance of design research and innovation to the health and commercial development of the Irish SME sector is clear. FAULTLINES also seeks to bridge the spaces between academia and industry partners. Through the various associated events and networking opportunities organised, it is hoped you may identify further potential collaborative action; for mutual benefit. I would like to thank keynote speakers and delegates for their contribution and all who have assisted in organising this event. I also wish to thank our sponsors for their generous support. While your time in Carlow and your contribution is critically important to the success of the conference, I hope you will also have a chance to visit VISUAL Arts Centre and experience the engaging international exhibition in augmented reality being held there. There are also many events occurring around Carlow as part of EIGSE Arts Festival which will be of interest. More importantly, during the conference, I hope you have an opportunity to grow your networks and that you are inspired to extend beyond the conference itself to develop further meaningful dialogues together.ye

Trends in Florida Citrus with Emphasis on Indian River, St. Lucie, Martin, and Palm Beach Counties

FE636, a 9-page fact sheet by Jackie K White and P.J. van Blokland, examines how hurricanes, freezes, citrus diseases and pests, competition with Brazil, and a booming population growth are affecting the citrus industry of Florida's Treasure Coast. It also examines the efforts of governments, organizations, and individuals to respond quickly and efficiently to these threats to the area's agricultural lands. Non-destructive detection of machining-induced white layers in ferromagnetic alloys

Machining-induced white layers are an undesirable surface integrity feature which, due to their physical properties, can have a direct effect on the in-service performance of aero-engine components. Typically, destructive methods such as cross-sectional microscopy are used during inspection to identify white layers. This is costly, both in terms of parts sacrificed and time-consumed. A non-destructive evaluation method could speed-up inspection and allow all parts to be inspected before entering service as well as throughout the component life cycle. The present work covers the quantitative characterization of machining-induced white layers in super chrome molybdenum vanadium steel through destructive methods in addition to Barkhausen noise non-destructive testing of the same surfaces. White layers formed by machining with severely worn inserts were measured to be up to 50% harder than the bulk material, possess nano-scale grains and can have an associated compressive residual stress state of up to -1800 MPa. Barkhausen noise testing was used to show that surfaces with a white layer formed by SPD could be detected by measuring shifts in the peak frequency of the Barkhausen noise signal, caused by the compressive near-surface residual stress state associated with the formation of white layers of this type
