Hot playgrounds and children's health: a multiscale analysis of surface temperatures in Arizona, USA
No full textabstract: Objectives: To provide novel quantification and advanced measurements of surface temperatures (Ts) in playgrounds, employing multiple scales of data, and provide insight into hot-hazard mitigation techniques and designs for improved environmental and public health. Methods: We conduct an analysis of Ts in two Metro-Phoenix playgrounds at three scales: neighborhood (1 km resolution), microscale (6.8 m resolution), and touch-scale (1 cm resolution). Data were derived from two sources: airborne remote sensing (neighborhood and microscale) and in situ (playground site) infrared Ts (touch-scale). Metrics of surface-to-air temperature deltas (Ts–a) and scale offsets (errors) are introduced. Results: Select in situ Ts in direct sunlight are shown to approach or surpass values likely to result in burns to children at touch-scales much finer than Ts resolved by airborne remote sensing. Scale offsets based on neighbourhood and microscale ground observations are 3.8 ◦C and 7.3 ◦C less than the Ts–a at the 1 cm touch-scale, respectively, and 6.6 ◦C and 10.1 ◦C lower than touch-scale playground equipment Ts, respectively. Hence, the coarser scales underestimate high Ts within playgrounds. Both natural (tree) and artificial (shade sail) shade types are associated with significant reductions in Ts. Conclusions: A scale mismatch exists based on differing methods of urban Ts measurement. The sub-meter touch-scale is the spatial scale at which data must be collected and policies of urban landscape design and health must be executed in order to mitigate high Ts in high-contact environments such as playgrounds. Shade implementation is the most promising mitigation technique to reduce child burns, increase park usability, and mitigate urban heating.Corresponding Author:

Hello Rebels Family!
It's easy to believe that the rich and famous are born well...rich and famous. Not so! On the
way to being famous...Gwen Stefani worked at Dairy Queen, Madonna was fired from Dunkin'
Donuts, Brad Pitt handed out flyers wearing a chicken suit for El Polio Loco, Rachel McAdams
was a server at McDonald's and Beyonce was swept up hair in her mother's salon. There are
jobs you will have before you 'make it' too. Some you will enjoy. And some - not so much.
On my way to becoming a teacher I was a waiter, a landscaper, a tree planter, and a
bartender. Some of these jobs I liked and some I hated. But ALL of these jobs brought me to
the profession I love and shaped who I have become.
At W.R. Myers High School we are proud of being a school where every student can find an
avenue for success and in being part of a community where everyone in the Rebel family
strives to find the best in themselves and others. As Christian Larson said, "Believe in yourself
and all that you are. Know that there is something inside you that is greater than any obstacle."
Remember that you are the star of your own life and that, with hard work, your dreams will become reality!

Wow! What a year! I chose "REBEL RESILIENCE" as the yearbook theme this year as I thought it was rather fitting given our
current 'COVID-1 9' situation. Some of you are already VERY RESILIENT, while others may feel like you are not. One thing is
for sure - you can always WORK on becoming MORE resilient.
Here are 10 ways you can work on becoming more resilient:
Have the courage to be imperfect
Take time for yourself
Sign up for that course, join that club
Be active every day in as many ways as you can
Spend time with people who make you feel good
Laugh out loud each day
Invite your neighbor (friend) over for a cup of tea (chat)
Do one thing now that you've been putting off
Focus more on things you can control

Thank you to all those who gave me a big smile (or at least didn't run away) when I put the camera in front of your face! I
apologize to those teams I missed getting photos of (that actually had the opportunity to play). Because this year is unlike any
other, I also decided to change up the color scheme from the traditional red/black/yellow! I would love some feedback on
this decision (love it/dislike it etc).
A huge shout-out to a stellar group of grade 9's who helped me with the yearbook in June (Madisen and Bryden O'Connor,
Kiernan Gyepesi, Will Evanson, Madison Reid, Heston Bevans and Allen Clements). Thank you specifically to Bryden O'Connor
for creating the color graphic used throughout the yearbook.
Some of the quotes found through out the yearbook were from the survey you filled out in the spring, which in, most cases,
does not have the author information and therefore simply states the grade level the quote came from. All other quotes with
Author Unknown" were found online and in most cases didn't have any author information either. In any case, my hope is
that they will either put a smile on your face, make you go 'hmm' or possibly even take time to pause and reflect on the

It was a sad reality that we all had to face this year with little to no athletic
competitions across the Province for High School Sport. But very thankfully, and
in true Rebel Spirit, we made the most of the situation and were able to organize
and provide our student-athletes with a few opportunities to participate in sport.
The Rebels made teams and practiced as much as they possibly could in football,
volleyball, cross-country, golf, basketball, and curling. Unfortunately, a few of our
traditional sports were not able to get off the ground in the Spring, but hopefully
that will only fuel the fire of the up and coming athletes for next season! We want
to give a big thanks to all those student-athletes and coaches who committed to
one or more of our teams during these tough, unprecedented circumstances, and
a special shout out to all the Grade 1 2 student-athletes for all of their years of
dedication to High School Sport!

The W.R. Myers Concert and
Stage Bands were unable to
perform this year due to COVID,
but we were lucky enough to still
be able to play our instruments.
Vince Gassi, a composer from
Toronto, was commissioned by
the W.R. Myers Band Parent
Association to write a piece for
the Concert Band. The band
students met with Mr. Gassi via
Zoom in October to talk to him
about the piece and the writing
process. He completed the piece
for us in January and we began
working on it. Again the band
students met with Mr. Gassi on
Zoom for him to listen to us play
and give feedback. But
unfortunately due to the COVID
restrictions, we were unable to
premier the piece. Hopefully,
next year we will be able to play
Tomorrow Shines Soon.

..had the opportunity to be a part of the "Minister's Youth Council." The Minister's Youth Council consists of 40 junior and senior high school students (in
Alberta) all of which have many diverse interests, perspectives, and backgrounds. Students get the opportunity to share their perspectives on many different
topics in education. Over the last couple of years students on this council have worked with the Alberta Government Education Department, MLA's,
industry professionals, teachers and school boards to help better education in out province. Specifically, these students helped inform a vaping policy from
Edmonton Public Schools, assisted in the creation of Bill 1 9 which aims to reduce vaping use in Alberta and helped shape the Ministerial Order on Student
Learning.

Sayge Turcato was in the Alberta
High School Rodeo Provincials
Finals at the beginning of June
she went into the finals as the
season leader in the Barrel
Racing and she was 8th in
District 1 for the Breakaway
Roping with a few go round wins
she ended up winning the
Alberta Finals in the Barrel
Racing and placing 4th in the
Breakaway. That qualified Sayge
to go to the National High School
Rodeo Finals 2021 in Lincoln,
Nebraska.

Spontaneous music : the first generation British free improvisers
No full textThe British free improvisation scene originated in London and Sheffield during the
mid 1960s. In groups such as AMM, the Spontaneous Music Ensemble and Joseph
Holbrooke, a distinctive and ambitious musicality developed that still occupies most
of its protagonists forty years later.
Marked stylistic contrasts developed within the genre, notably the `atomistic' and
`laminar' methods of interaction. Nonetheless, a consistency of principle and practice
was also apparent that defined British free improvisation as unique. In some respects
the genre resembled its German, Dutch and American counterparts, and also the jazz
and classical avant-gardes that had inspired them. Both conceptually and practically,
however, clear differences remained.
The British free improvisers refined a method and an aesthetic of musical creativity,
which suggested an intimate perspective and a detailed analysis of that which we
accept as `music'. Its techniques and results were unconventional, but remained
consistent with music's defining concepts and experiences. As such, British free
improvisation suggested a more inclusive model of musicality than is common, and
implied a broad critique of the cultural values that define `music' at all. Though the
free improvisers themselves did not explicitly state the connection, their work may be
viewed in the context of Deconstruction: the post-structuralist analytical strategy
associated with philosopher Jacques Derrida.
British free improvisation culminated from innovations within the twentieth century
avant-garde. Referencing styles such as atonality and free jazz, it challenged the
aesthetic, technical and hierarchical standards of Western tradition in a form that was
striking and extreme, but also of logical development and focus. Free improvisation
owed explicit debt to a variety of other musics; its most singular achievement
however, was the redefinition of `rhythm' by which it disguised this fact.
The music of the first generation British free improvisers is reliant upon precise
conceptual and practical execution. But though this has enabled the genre to be
musically innovative, in the long term it has also become a logical problem. With
British free improvisation as its subject, the scrutiny of Deconstruction reveals
significant discrepancies between what `free improvisation' implies and what it
actually represents
Rent - seeking trade policy : a time series approach
Get PDFUsing a time-series approach, the author analyzes the relationship between the extent of rent-seeking trade policy and both political and economic variables. For rent-seeking trade policy, the indicator he uses is the number of foreign-trade regulations passed each year for the benefit of a single firm or industry. The author uses data from Uruguay for 1925-83. Uruguay, which experienced an impressive economic decline, is an outstanding example of a rent-seeking society. After being a wealthy economy in midcentury, it suffered almost complete stagnation, which led to social and policital disintegration by the end of the 1960s. Three decades of restrictive regulations on foreign trade had created a nearly closed economy by the end of the 1960s. It was worth analyzing whether policymakers'great receptiveness to demands for protection could account for Uruguay's decline. Over the period 1925-83, the author finds almost 4,000 laws, decrees, and administrative resolutions that create, maintain, or modify a foreign-trade regulation for the benefit of a single firm or industry. About half of them explicitly identify the petitioner - usually a firm or guild. Since the size of the Uruguayan economy changed over the period studied, the author scales the annual number of regulations by output or exports to measure the extent of rent-seeking trade policy. The author shows that the extent of rent-seeking trade policy increased with discretionary policies and under dictatorship. (In the period studied, there were two stages of democracy - until 1932 and from 1943-72 - and two stages of dictatorship.) He also shows that rent-seeking trade restrictions increased under import-substitution strategies and, more unexpectedly, under active export promotion. This suggests that discretionary power leads to wasteful distribution, whether it is used to support inward- or outward-oriented policies. Finally, the author analyzes the correlation between innovations in the trade policy indicator and innovations in the growth rates of output and exports, with a lag of up to 20 years. Surprisingly, he finds a positive correlation with output growth rates after two or three years. But the correlation becomes negative some years later, particularly in the case of exports. The costs and benefits of Slovenian independence
Get PDFOne year is not enough time to draw conclusions about independent Slovenia's prospects, and it may not be easy for other countries to copy Slovenia's model. Slovenia is ethnically homogeneous, culturally and historically compatible with the West, and near (and somewhat protected from)friendly Western neighbors. And despite sharp political divisions, it has shown a political will to fight counterproductive redistribution. Still, Slovenia's experience may offer insights for other new post-Communist economies. Despite the obvious short-run costs of the brutal breakup of Yogoslavia's federal structure, Slovenia's medium- and long-run economic prospects are fairly good. Declining trade with the rest of Yugoslavia dims Slovenia's short-run prospects. But in the long run it may benefit from greater macroeconomic stability, freedom from subsidizing less-developed regions of Yugoslavia, and speedier integration with Western Europe. What has happened to Slovenia does not prove that separation necessarily improves welfare. In fact, had forces amenable to rational debate and compromise prevailed in Yogoslavia, Slovenia's secession might have decreased welfare. Slovenia's experience suggests that secession from a larger entity that is wrecked by political instability may produce economic benefits. Local autonomy gives Slovenia a chance to introduce a new currency and achieve macroeconomic stability, for example. This can work only if the local political constellation is not controlled by coalitions bent on preserving the old system of redistribution and is not hampered by major political divisions that paralyze decisionmaking. In short, secession can be beneficial if the new state is more homogeneous and functions more coherently than the old state. Not all newly independent states would face the costs Slovenia has faced. In the Czech-Slovak breakup, for example, political risk and refugee costs (or rather, the costs of migration) were much smaller than in Slovenia. found its way into the concert repertoire. The accompanied sonata was a genre meant for domestic performance; the solo keyboard sonata, on
the other hand, was adopted in due course by concert audiences. J. C. Bach composed works within both genres during most of his productive years, and his output constitutes a corpus of remarkable consistency. J. C. Bach's removal to London in 1762 coincided with his clear adoption of a galant style, marked by the Italianate influence, and the abandonment of most Baroque traits. The British milieu provided additional factors: the rise of the pianoforte, a thriving music-publishing market, and a great interest in domestic music making among the affluent classes. These factors marked J. C. Bach's output at various levels. Keyboard works had to conform to the proficiency of the amateur performer, a
fact reflected in the accompanied output mostly. The number of movements, their length, and the inclusion of particular technical devices are readily observable differences between the two genres. The most remarkable
distinction lies perhaps in the preference for binary sonata format in the accompanied. sonatas from the mid 1760s to the 1770s, in spite of a later tendency for tripartite designs in both genres. J. C. Bach's lifelong preference for motivic phrase structure conditioned his keyboard production and partly explains the gap in quality between some of his works and sonatas composed around the same time by Haydn and Mozart, who developed more effective means to connect the melodic material
to higher structural units. J. C. Bach's influence, however, endured in Mozart's handling of melody, and his keyboard production constitutes, in spite of some flaws, a noteworthy example of elegance and craftsmanship
The cross-cultural generalizability of the psychopathy checklist: Youth version for adjudicated indigenous youth
No full textThere is a paucity of Indigenous-specific research examining the reliability and validity of assessment tools routinely utilized within the justice system. Evaluating the cross-cultural reliability and validity of such tools is important for establishing generalizability as part of ethical practices; this is particularly important to address within Canada’s Indigenous youth population because of longstanding effects of colonization, structural adversities, and overrepresentation in the youth justice system and the possible long-term impact of improper assessment on adult outcomes. A step toward this aim was undertaken in the current study by comparing scale reliability, structural validity, measurement invariance, and predictive validity of the Psychopathy Checklist: Youth Version (PCL:YV) across Indigenous (n = 137) and White (n = 312) adjudicated youth. Polychoric ordinal alpha values indicated that PCL:YV test score scale reliability was high for both Indigenous and White youth. Confirmatory factor analyses demonstrated that a 3-factor and 4-factor model provided acceptable-to-good fit for the full sample, and an examination of configural, metric, and scalar measurement invariance illustrated that both factor structures fit the subsamples equally well. PCL:YV test scores were also moderately associated with measures of different offending outcomes and performed similarly across White and Indigenous participants. Overall, support was found for the use of the PCL:YV within Indigenous youth, including its use in conjunction with other risk factors and assessment tools to guide risk assessment decisions for this group. The importance of cross-cultural research and directions for future research are discussed. The Coupling Effect: Experimental Validation of the Fusion of Fossen and Featherstone to Simulate UVMS Dynamics in Julia
Get PDFAs Underwater Vehicle Manipulator Systems (UVMSs) have gotten smaller and
lighter over the past years, it is becoming increasingly important to consider
the coupling forces between the manipulator and the vehicle when planning and
controlling the system. A number of different models have been proposed, each
using different rigid body dynamics or hydrodynamics algorithms, or purporting
to consider different dynamic effects on the system, but most go without
experimental validation of the full model, and in particular, of the coupling
effect between the two systems. In this work, we return to a model combining
Featherstone's rigid body dynamics algorithms with Fossen's equations for
underwater dynamics by using the Julia package RigidBodyDynamics.jl. We compare
the simulation's output with experimental results from pool trials with a ten
degree of freedom UVMS that integrates a Reach Alpha manipulator with a
BlueROV2. We validate the model's usefulness and identify its strengths and

Get PDFThe studies reported in this investigation involved the characterization of the nucleoside transport system at the subcellular level in cardiac tissue, in an attempt to augment the knowledge of adenosine's role in cardiovascular function. A protocol was developed that produced a substantially pure mitocondrial fraction. Kinetic and pharmacologic studies showed that [3H]NBMPR binds to and labels populations of binding sites that appear to recognize adenosine as a probable substrate. Results from this data provide analytical probes for further binding site studies. Therefore, additional investigation is warranted in order to fully understand the interactions of adenosine and assess the mechanism by which the nucleoside produces its physiologic effects in the heart
