    The New Jersey Climate Adaptation Alliance Advisory Committee requested that Rutgers University convene a Science and Technical Advisory Panel (STAP) to synthesize for practitioners the most recent climate science needed to inform efforts to increase the resilience of New Jersey’s people, places, and assets (including infrastructure, communities and natural resources) to regional sea-level rise (SLR), changing coastal storms and the resulting flood risk. This companion report to the STAP report provides context for New Jersey citizens, practitioners, and decision makers to better understand how New Jersey municipal decision makers and municipal professionals consider the use of coastal hazard data; how climate change impacts from sea-level rise and changes in coastal storms are being addressed in some other areas of the Northeast; and the degree to which coastal climate change impacts are currently being addressed in New Jersey.Please cite this report as: Kaplan, M., M.     Electromagnetic Characterization of the LISA Verification Binary ZTF J0526+5934

Published by the American Astronomical Society. cc-byWe present an analysis of new and archival data to the 20.506 minute LISA verification binary J052610.42+593445.32 (J0526+5934). Our joint spectroscopic and photometric analysis finds that the binary contains an unseen M 1 = 0.89 ± 0.11 M ⊙ CO-core white dwarf primary with an M 2 = 0.38 ± 0.07 M ⊙ post-core-burning subdwarf, or low-mass white dwarf, companion. Given the short orbital period and relatively large total binary mass, we find that LISA will detect this binary with signal-to-noise ratio 44 after 4 yr of observations. J0526+5934 is expected to merge within 1.8 ± 0.3 Myr and likely result in a D6 scenario Type Ia supernova or form a He-rich star that will evolve into a massive single white dwarf

    Approximate Personal Name-Matching Through Finite-State Graphs

    This article shows how finite-state methods can be employed in a new and different task: the conflation of personal name variants in standard forms. In bibliographic databases and citation index systems, variant forms create problems of inaccuracy that affect information retrieval, the quality of information from databases, and the citation statistics used for the evaluation of scientists' work. A number of approximate string matching techniques have been developed to validate variant forms, based on similarity and equivalence relations. We classify the personal name variants as nonvalid and valid forms. In establishing an equivalence relation between valid variants and the standard form of its equivalence class, we defend the application of finite-state transducers. The process of variant identification requires the elaboration of: (a) binary matrices and (b) finite-state graphs. This procedure was tested on samples of author names from bibliographic records, selected from the Library and Information Science Abstracts (LISA) and Science Citation Index Expanded (SCI-E) databases. The evaluation involved calculating the measures of precision and recall, based on completeness and accuracy. The results demonstrate the usefulness of this approach, although it should be complemented with methods based on similarity relations for the recognition of spelling variants and misspellings

    Analysis of distance and time perceptions for walking trips: New Jersey statewide pedestrian survey

    In 2017, the Alan M. Voorhees Transportation Center (VTC) undertook a study to understand the factors that influence a person’s decision to walk, bicycle, drive, or take public transportation for a given trip. The study was particularly interested in understanding how often residents are driving for seemingly walkable trips and what factors can be attributed to this decision. The study relies primarily on data gathered through intercept surveys conducted throughout the summer of 2017. Survey data was supplemented with environmental data collected from each location. The report aims to provide an understanding of influences on mode choice and seeks to identify opportunities to promote more walking for shorter trips. The last pedestrian behavior study conducted by VTC was undertaken in 2009. While the survey methodology has evolved, several survey questions were repeated in order to identify changes in walking behavior over the last eight years. The report is broken down into three sections. First, a summary of findings across all survey locations provides a general overview of the attitudes and behaviors witnessed across the state. The second section analyzes the data collected for each location and includes maps of the locations utilized on each survey. Lastly, conclusions are drawn from the data to inform policies related to changing transportation habits and encouraging walking for short trips in communities around the state
