Intracellular distribution and stability of a luminescent rhenium(i) tricarbonyl tetrazolato complex using epifluorescence microscopy in conjunction with X-ray fluorescence imaging

Link to a related website: https://www.osti.gov/biblio/1374605, Open Access via UnpaywallOptical epifluorescence microscopy was used in conjunction with X-ray fluorescence imaging to monitor the stability and intracellular distribution of the luminescent rhenium(i) complex fac-[Re(CO)3(phen)L], where phen = 1,10-phenathroline and L = 5-(4-iodophenyl)tetrazolato, in 22Rv1 cells. The rhenium complex showed no signs of ancillary ligand dissociation, a conclusion based on data obtained via X-ray fluorescence imaging aligning iodine and rhenium distributions. A diffuse reticular localisation was detected for the complex in the nuclear/perinuclear region of cells, by either optical or X-ray fluorescence imaging techniques. X-ray fluorescence also showed that the rhenium complex disrupted the homeostasis of some biologically relevant elements, such as chlorine, potassium and zinc.J. L. Wedding, H. H. Harris, C. A. Modulation of the organelle specificity in Re(i) tetrazolato complexes leads to labeling of lipid droplets

Link to a related website: https://espace.curtin.edu.au/bitstream/20.500.11937/36208/2/198942_198942.pdf, Open Access via UnpaywallThe biological behaviour in terms of cellular incubation and organelle specificity for two complexes of the type fac-[Re(CO)₃( phen)L], where phen is 1,10-phenanthroline and L is either 3-pyridyltetrazolate or 4-cyanophenyltetrazolate, are herein investigated. The emission signal detected from the live insect Drosophila and human cell lines, generated by exploiting two-photon excitation at 830 nm to reduce cellular damage and autofluorescence, suggests photophysical properties that are analogous to those measured from dilute solutions, meaning that the complexes remain intact within the cellular environment. Moreover, the rhenium complex linked to 4-cyanophenyltetrazolate shows high specificity for the lipid droplets, whereas the complex bound to 3-pyridyltetrazolate tends to localise within the lysosomes. This differential localisation implies that in these complexes, organelle specificity can be achieved and manipulated by simple functional group transformations thus avoiding more complex bioconjugation strategies. More importantly, these results highlight the first example of phosphorescent labeling of the lipid droplets, whose important cellular functions have been recently highlighted along with the fact that their role in the metabolism of healthy and diseased cells has not been fully elucidated.Christie A. Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more

Simulation of thermal plant optimization and hydraulic aspects of thermal distribution loops for large campuses
Following an introduction, the author describes Texas A&M University and its utilities system. After that, the author presents how to construct simulation models for chilled water and heating hot water distribution systems. The simulation model was used in a $2.3 million Ross Street chilled water pipe replacement project at Texas A&M University. A second project conducted at the University of Texas at San Antonio was used as an example to demonstrate how to identify and design an optimal distribution system by using a simulation model. The author found that the minor losses of these closed loop thermal distribution systems are significantly higher than potable water distribution systems. In the second part of the report, the author presents the latest development of software called the Plant Optimization Program, which can simulate cogeneration plant operation, estimate its operation cost and provide optimized operation suggestions. The author also developed detailed simulation models for a gas turbine and heat recovery steam generator and identified significant potential savings. Finally, the author also used a steam turbine as an example to present a multi-regression method on constructing simulation models by using basic statistics and optimization algorithms. This report presents a survey of the author??s working experience at the Energy Systems Laboratory (ESL) at Texas A&M University during the period of January 2002 through March 2004. The purpose of the above work was to allow the author to become familiar with the practice of engineering. The result is that the author knows how to complete a project from start to finish and understands how both technical and nontechnical aspects of a project need to be considered in order to ensure a quality deliverable and bring a project to successful completion. This report concludes that the objectives of the internship were successfully accomplished and that the requirements for the degree of Degree of Engineering have been satisfied
Synthesis, photophysical and electrochemical investigation of dinuclear tetrazolato-bridged rhenium complexes
Starting from anionic tetrazole-based ligands, namely 5-(4’-cyanophenyl)tetrazolate and 5-(4’-pyridyl)tetrazolate, mononuclear and dinuclear complexes of fac-[Re(CO)3(phen)]+ (phen = 1,10-phenanthroline) were prepared and characterized. For the mononuclear complexes, regioselective coordination of the metal fragments on the negatively charged tetrazolato ring is exclusively obtained. Coordination to the benzonitrile and pyridine groups was achieved by previous alkylation of the tetrazole ring. Dinuclear complexes were obtained by treatment of the corresponding mononuclear tetrazole-bound complexes with fac-[Re(CO)3(phen)(THF)]+. The second rhenium fragment coordinated either to the pyridine ring or, in the case of the benzonitrile ligand, to the tetrazole ring. The electrochemical properties were probed in an imidazolium ionic liquid, highlighting reduction processes centered on the phen ligand and oxidation processes localized on the metal. The photophysical properties of the complexes are characterized by phosphorescent emission from triplet metal-to-ligand charge transfer excited states, with trends in the lifetime and quantum yield in qualitative agreement with the energy gap law. The two dinuclear complexes show almost superimposable emission profiles: in the 5-(4’-cyanophenyl) tetrazolate-bridged complex, the two metal fragments coordinated to the tetrazole are equivalent and share a positive charge of +1. On the other hand, the photophysical properties of the 5-(4’pyridyl)tetrazolate-bridged dinuclear complex suggest energy transfer between the two metal centers
