Discourse, resistance and identity formation
The fifth and final book in the Discourse, Power, Resistance series, which has provided stringent and timely critique of current education, examines identity formation. It argues that teachers and learners are pressed to conform their professional identity to a model imposed by distant policy makers who have wholly different concerns. The result is oppressive so learners and teachers adopt various strategies of resistance.
The contributors are Anne-Marie Bathmaker, Yota Dimitriadi, Eileen Honan, Cheryl Hunt, Mhairi Mackie, Maggie MacLure, Christina Schwabenland and David Selby. Jerome Satterthwaite and Lorna Roberts are based at Manchester Metropolitan University and Wendy Martin at the University of Plymouth.
This is a book for academics and students working at all levels of education and for policy-makers and managers
[Letter from E. Kirlin to Junia Roberts Osterhout, September 3, 1877]
Letter from E. Kirlin to their sister, Junia Roberts Osterhout. Kirlin wrote her about what was happening with their family and hoped Junia would be able to visit soon. The author mentioned in the letter that the "colored girl" that worked for the family might be leaving. Kirlin finished the letter with information from another letter that had been received
The global knowledge economy in question
Purpose – The aim of this paper is to bring into question the idea of the global knowledge economy. Design/methodology/approach – The paper explores the characteristics of the knowledge economy, as elaborated by academics and policy makers concerned with knowledge in the contemporary global business environment. A range of available data is reviewed concerning the global distribution of investments in knowledge, information and communications technologies (ICTs), international transactions in knowledge-intensive services and royalty and licensing fees, employment by sector and literacy rates. Such data provide a basis for an initial critical evaluation of the notion of the global knowledge economy.
Findings – The use of the term “global knowledge economy” fails to acknowledge the uneven distribution of knowledge-based economic activity. Moreover, as currently constituted, the idea of a global knowledge economy, which focuses on knowledge as conceptualised in the commercial activities of advanced countries, overlooks the diversity of knowledges present in the world today.
Originality/value – This paper provides the first attempt to question and critically explore the global knowledge economy

The Psychgeist of Pop Culture – Stranger Things
Recent times have witnessed an explosion in forms of media that fall under the umbrella of "pop culture". However, no series represents this phenomenon more clearly than Netflix's own Stranger Things. It is a veritable cornucopia of nostalgic cultural references, an offering of the bygone era of the 1980s suburban America. This book brings together scholars from a diverse set of backgrounds to explore why this show engenders such an intense fandom and lasting impact on the human psyche.
"A fascinating dive into the psychology of Stranger Things - this book is a must for anyone looking to more deeply get to know the why behind their favourite characters." Caitlin Schneiderhan, Author of 'Stranger Things: Flight of Icarus' and Writer for Stranger Things (Netflix

Genus Astroloba Uitewaal (Liliaceae)
Includes bibliographical references. The present work was undertaken to provide a much needed taxonomic revision of the genus Astroloba Uitew. Type material of all previously described species appears to be completely lacking. This revision was based almost entirely on living material collected by the author. Studies were made of morphological variation, geographical distribution, cytology and ecology. The morphological studies were based on field population samples. As a result of these studies, seven species and three subspecies were established, of which three species and one subspecies are new : A. rugosa Roberts, A. hallii Roberts, A. smutsiana Roberts and A. foliolosa subsp. robusta Roberts. One new combination is made: A. foliolosa subsp. congesta (Salm-Dyk) Roberts. A new key to the species is given. Because this genus is so little known, a large number of plates are included. A new hybrid genus, X Astroworthia Roberts, was established for hybrids between the genera Astroloba and Haworthia Duval. This consists at present of one species, X Astroworthia bicarinata (Haworth) Roberts comb. nov
Characteristics of Self-Citation in Journal of Natural Rubber Research 1988-1997: a Ten-Year Bibliometric Study
Analyses the extent of journal self-citation and author self-citation in the research articles and short communications published in Journal of Natural Rubber Research during 1988 to 1997. Results show that 53% of articles contained journal self-citations; the rate of journal self-citations per article ranges between 1 to 12; a high percentage of authors (61.4%) contributing articles to the journal cited themselves; a tendency is noticed for authors affiliated to the institution publishing the journal to cite the journal; the highest self-citing author is A. D. Roberts
Mixed Bruce-Roberts numbers
[EN] We extend the notions of mu*- sequences and Tjurina numbers of functions to the framework of Bruce-Roberts numbers, that is, to pairs formed by the germ at 0 of a complex analytic variety X. Cn and a finitely R( X)-determined analytic function germ f : (Cn, 0). (C, 0). We analyze some fundamental properties of these numbers.Part of this work was developed during the stay of the first author at the Departamento de Matematica of ICMC, Sao Carlos, Universidade de Sao Paulo (Brazil), in February and July 2018.
