    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

    Differences in survival of heat stress adapted cells of Listeria monocytogenes EGD (Bug600) in disinfectants and essential oils

    The objective of this study was to investigate the differences in survival of L. monocytogenes EGD (Bug600) (serotype 1/2a) in various disinfectants and essential oils after sublethal heat stress at 48°C for 60 min. The survival of heat stressed L. monocytogenes cells was decreased in lethal acid (HCl or H3PO4 pH 2.5), lethal oxidative stress (H2O2 1000 ppm) and lethal quaternary ammonium compounds (QAC 2.5-3.5 ppm) compared to non-stressed control cells. By contrast, the survival of heat stressed L. monocytogenes cells was higher in lethal alkali (NaOH or KOH pH 12) than the control cells. Also, the survival of heat stressed L. monocytogenes cells was higher in lethal carvacrol (428 ppm) and bay oil (1100 ppm) but was decreased in lethal red thyme oil (300 pm) compared to control. These findings indicate that the heat stressed cells of L. monocytogenes are not easily killed by alkali-based disinfectants and essential oils containing carvacrol and bay oil. Therefore, disinfectants and essential treatments should be carefully considered when heat stressed cells of L. monocytogenes may be present

    A correlation study on soil selenium content and Diabetes Mellitus in contiguous United States

    Selenium, the essential trace element, is well known as its antioxidant function, antiviral properties, and its anti-inflammatory function to human health. The relationships between selenium status and diabetes mellitus have been widely studied, but the consistency of results is lacking. This study used diagnosed diabetes incidence from year 2004 to 2012 and soil selenium content by counties within 48 contiguous states in the U.S. with Generalized Linear Mixed Model- R-Side as the major statistical method to determine whether there is a significant correlation or not. Results showed that the diagnosed diabetes population had been increased from 2004 to 2012 for all 48 states. The South region showed the highest increased rate whereas the Northeast region showed the least. Also, Kentucky, Louisiana, Maryland, and Massachusetts are the four states showed the significant correlation between soil selenium content and diabetes incidence. However, improved analytical methods and data are needed for further research

    Antioxidative efficacy and relative accessible hydrophobicity of aromatic residue rich peptides in alfa-chymotryptic digests of acid casein

    Four casein-derived peptides fractions of varying hydrophobicity were obtained from á-chymotryptic digest of acid casein using hydrophobic interaction chromatography, termed fractions one through four (abbreviated, F1, F2, F3, and F4). Four standard methods involving alkoxyl, peroxyl, 2, 2-diphenyl-1-picrylhydrazl (DPPH), and 2, 2\u27-azino-bis (3-ethylbenzothiazoline-6-sulphonic acid) ABTS•+ radicals, were used to measure antioxidative properties. While significantly superior efficacy was exhibited by F2 for all tests except against DPPH, no correlation between antioxidant efficacy and surface hydrophobicity was found. By using capillary electrophoresis and high performance liquid chromatography, the detection of aromatic chromophores by ultraviolet at 280 nm in the fractions revealed that F2 contained the highest concentration of aromatic amino acids and a unique peptide. Result from circular dichroism exhibited remaining residual structure in F2 compared with undigested casein. The F2 possesses a high potential to be used in food industry as a natural source of antioxidant with pronounced antioxidant capacity

    Assessing the relationship between a single nucleotide polymorphism in PKD2L1, body composition, and dietary intake in young adults in Mississippi

    Single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in various taste receptor genes have previously been linked to outcomes such as differences in taste thresholds, food liking, and body mass index, but no studies of this sort have examined sour taste. This study genotyped 501 young adults for PKD2L1 rs603424 and administered a Food Frequency Questionnaire and Tanita body composition testing to look for associations between the noted SNP, dietary intake, and body composition. Intake of citrus fruit, vitamin C, caffeine, and alcohol were significantly associated with genotype in two-way ANOVA analyses looking at the effect of genotype and race or sex on dietary intake. Regarding body composition, genotype was significantly associated with BMI, but not body fat percentage or fat free mass. These findings suggest that rs603424 may influence intake of certain sour and bitter dietary components; however, further research will be needed to confirm these findings
