    In this research, a thermal analysis of the wire and arc additive manufacturing process is presented based on the F.E. method. An important quality of the F.E. model that is presented in this research is to describe the temperature field that is experienced by the deposited material in the wire and arc additive manufacturing process. In contrast to the traditional method of monitoring the substrate temperature, the F.E. model allows to describe the temperature field that is experienced by the deposited material constituting both the multilayer weld deposit and the component. Accordingly, the F.E. model is capable to describe the effect of the locally attained temperature field on the microstructure of the deposited material constituting the multilayer weld deposit in terms of the thermal characteristics including the temperature distribution, the locally attained temperature values, the cooling rates and the temperature gradients throughout the component. Two cooling methods are proposed to control the heat dissipation from the component to the environment based on the application of an interlayer waiting time and immersing the component into a cooling medium. The results show a significant effect of the cooling methods on the temperature field that is experienced by the material constituting both the multilayer weld deposit and the component. Indicating that the cooling methods that are proposed in this research are effective to control the microstructure and the temperature field that is experienced by the component in the wire and arc additive manufacturing process. The resulting microstructure is characterised in terms of the microstructural morphology and the microstructural constituents, using optical microscopy based on the average grain size and the distribution of alloying elements throughout the material constituting the multilayer weld deposit.     Introduced marine biota in Western Australian waters

    An annotated compendium is presented of 102 species of marine algae and animals that have been reported as introduced into Western Australian marine and estuarine waters, four of which arc on the Australian national list of targeted marine pest species. For each species the authority, distribution (both in Western Australia and elsewhere), voucher specimen(s) and remarks are given. Sixty species are considered to have been introduced through human activity, including three on the list of Australian declared marine pests. The most invasive groups are: bryozoans (15 species), crustaceans (13 species) and molluscs (9 species). Seven of these introduced species, including four natural introductions, have not been found recently and are not presently considered to be living in Western Australia. Twenty six species are regarded as cryptogenic or native. The records of nine species, including two declared marine pests, are questionable or rejected. The distribution of the 60 introduced species shows that most (37) are temperate species that occur from Geraldton south; only 6 are tropical species that occur from Shark Bay north; 17 introduced species occur in both the southern and northern halves of Western Australia, Because most of the introduced species are temperate species, southern marine areas have more introduced marine species than northern areas. The greatest concentration is in the southwest corner: 46 in Fremantle, Cockburn Sound and the lower Swan River; 25 in Albany and 24 in Bunbury. We conclude with a strong recommedation that continuing baseline taxonomic research and surveys of the Western Australian marine waters be regarded as an essential component of protecting and managing the State's valuable marine environment

    Independent magnetotransport in parallel InGaAs double quantum wells with strongly different properties

    S.242-246A double quantum well system consisting of two asymmetric In 0.53 Ga 0.47 As quantum wells, of 9 nm and 7 nm width. Respectively, separated by a 4.5 nm In 0.52 Al 0.48 As barrier, has been studied using magnetotransport measurements over a wide range of different total electron densities as well as different ratios of the electron densities in the two quantum wells ns1:ns2. The Hall measurements reveal planteaus for even and odd integer filling factors v. depending on the electron density. SdH and Hall measurements for an electron density ratio ns1:ns2 = 1:2 show integer filling factors V = 3i (i integer). This can be understood by treating transport in both quantum wells as independent. Therefore filling factors v = v1 + v2, with v1 and v2 filling factors of the two quantum wells respectively, are observed. From SdH measurements other basic quantities, such as electron densities, transport and quantum lifetimes and g-factor, were obtained for both quantum wells separately. This leads to the conclusion that the upper quantum well is always less than half as populated as the lower one. it also exhibits a longer quantum lifetime and therfore shows a very pronounced g-factor enhancement, more than four times as large as for the lower quantum well. The pronounced appearance of odd filling factors is therefore understood by means of this very strong g-factor enhancement for the less populated upper quantum well for magnetic fields larger than 4 T.15Nr.

    The quality and reputation of an academic journal can depend on several factors, but high-quality peer reviews are always a core requirement. Unfortunately, reviews are not always up to the standard that they should be. Poor reviews can result in a number of problems including sub-standard articles being accepted and good manuscripts being rejected. Good reviews are comparable to good papers; they require attention and dedication to write well. Although journals are different, it is important that reviewers approach their task with goodwill, i.e. that they approach a manuscript with an open mind, read it with care and attention and make comments that are constructive and show self-reflection.     A low number of invasive marine species in the tropics: a case study from Pilbara (Western Australia)

    Invasive marine species (IMS) are thought to be one of the most serious anthropogenic threats to global marine biodiversity. There are numerous reports of IMS being introduced into new areas throughout the world, but relatively few are in tropical locations. It has been suggested that this is an artefact of our lack of knowledge species present in the megadiverse tropics and a lack of IMS surveys. The Pilbara in northern Western Australia (WA) is used as a case study to examine these questions. The area is at high risk of IMS because of extensive international shipping. A detailed literature search of marine biodiversity studies developed a database of 5,532 species recorded in the Pilbara. There have been numerous surveys for species on the Australian national and WA IMS lists but only one, the ascidian Didemnum perlucidum Monniot, 1983, has been found
