Health Care Utilization and Costs Among Transition-Age Young Adult Medicare Beneficiaries With Autism Spectrum Disorder
Abstract
Date Presented 3/30/2017
Our study of Medicare claims found that young adults with autism spectrum disorder (N > 5,500) experienced low rates of preventive and occupational therapy (OT) and physical therapy service use and high rates of emergency department use. There is a need for wellness and preventive services, creating opportunities for OT to develop interventions to improve care.

Examining the Risk and Rewards for the Anthropogenic Spread of Wild Hogs
Moderator: Billy Higginbotham.Presented at the 8th international congress for wildlife and livelihoods on private and communal lands: livestock, tourism, and spirit, that was held on September 7-12, 2014 in Estes Park, Colorado.Video presenter: Joe Caudell.Wild hogs (Sus scrofa) are an invasive, exotic species that have spread through much of the US through anthropogenic means. Many states have laws and regulations with the intent of reducing the illegal importation, introduction, and establishment of wild swine populations. However, in many cases, these laws have been ineffectual for stopping the anthropogenic spread of wild swine. To assess the risk for moving wild hogs, we examined various wild hog-related laws throughout the US and assessed the potential reward for their illegal movement. We found that fines ranged from 0 to > 497 a mean maximum fine of 500; however, this varied widely among states. In many cases, the potential rewards for releasing wild hogs far outweighed the monetary risk from getting caught. States with few or no wild hogs and weak laws and/or fine are at a substantial risk for the illegal importation of wild hogs. In many cases, the risk of getting caught and having to pay a low fine is far outweighed by the money and opportunity costs saved by being able to hunt hogs in their own state. To reduce the potential for the spread of wild hogs, agencies should concentrate on increasing monetary fines or increasing the perceptions that this illegal activity will be successfully prosecuted

OPERATION BEAUTIFICATION
One Person Can Make A Difference
Susan Zobell, relatively new in Magrath has
shown that quiet community service can really
pay off. Spurred on by the great new look of
our recently completed sidewalks, she felt lots
of businesses could use some paint to add to
our new look. Deciding that a couple of coats
of paint on the old bottle depot, formerly the
Park Theatre, could spruce up Main Street she
quietly got permission and set about to do it. A
Store News invitation for volunteers brought in
several citizens (all mostly newcomers as well).
She was ably aided by her husband, two sons
and her mother from Cardston. Basic work
started out Saturday morning and was
completed in record time with lots of fun in the
bargain. Check out the results as you drive by.
Susan works in the mornings, but will paint the
trim herself, redo the original sign and add
some window Theatre Posters. It’s not all paid
for yet, but hopefully others will decide that a
small donation will be a big investment
community improvement.
Those involved agreed that they would be
willing to paint trim or store fronts for any
businesses on Main Street that wished to
contribute the paint. What a great offer.
Wouldn’t it be great to see that happen?
Thanks, Susan.
