The former chief rabbi of Vienna, Moritz Guedemann (1835-1918), was a cousin of his mother. At the age of 15 Weis became a member of WAF, an athletic club in Vienna. He seved one year in the Austrian Army before Anschluss. He immigrated to the United States in 1939 via the Netherlands.
