No full textThis report documents the computer program FUNWAVE based on the fully nonlinear Boussinesq model of Wei et al. (1995). The documentation provides a description of the governing equations and the numerical scheme used to solve it. A user's manual is provided and gives instructions on how to use various preprocessors and postprocessors to set up and read data files needed for model runs. Fortran code is provided for one and two-dimensional versions of the model, as well as for the additional data processing programs. Finally, several example calculations are documented
Measuring industry-science links through inventor-author relations: A profiling method
Full text linkIn this pilot study we examine the performance of text-based profiling in recovering a set of validated inventor-author links. In a first step we match patents and publications solely based on their similarity in content. Next, we compare inventor and author names on the highest ranked matches for the occurrence of name matches. Finally, we compare these candidate matches with the names listed in a validated set of inventor-author names. Our text-based profile methodology performs significantly better than a random matching of patents and publications, suggesting that text-based profiling is a valuable complementary tool to the name searches used in previous studies.innovation; industry-science links; text-based profiling;

No full textEen methode voor beschrijving en betekenistoekenning van de LNC-aspecten in de planvorming van de dijkversterking. De inventarisatie is de beschrijving van LNC volgens geijkte methoden. De waardering in het tweede deel van de handreiking is daarentegen grotendeels een stap in het onbekende. Per projekt moet worden bepaald welke waarde aan de bij de inventarisatie gevonden organismen en objekten moet worden toegekend. Voor een klein deel is houvast te vinden in de lijsten van bedreigde soorten, monumenten, natuurreservaten en beschermde dorps- en stadsgezichten. Die bezitten een reeds geautoriseerde waarde. Echter, aan verreweg de meeste levende wezens en dingen in het landschap is nog geen waarde toegekend volgens een officiele procedure. Voor elk traject en projekt moet dat dus nog gedaan worden. Omdat waarde een eigenschap is die wordt toegekend en die dus niet zelfstandig door een organisme of een landschapselement wordt ontwikkeld, is waarde per definitie subjectief. Dit is geen diskwalificatie maar het vergt daardoor wei de inbreng van zoveel mogelijk betrokken personen (subjecten) om voldoende maatschappelijk draagvlak te verkrijgen. De TAW doet voor deze moeilijke stap een hand reiking in de vorm van parameters waardoor de in een dijktraject aangetroffen LNC aspecten getalsmatig kunnen worden uitgedrukt. Deze parameters, zoals zeldzaamheid of kenmerkendheid zijn eigenschappen van het rivierdijken landschap en zijn uitgekozen omdat ze bruikbaar worden geacht als maat voor het bijzondere, eigene en kwetsbare. Deze parameters houden het proces doorzichtig en toetsbaar. De waardetoekenning ontkomt echter niet aan een laatste stap van subjectieve keuze.TAW/EN
Reverse engineering of industrially relevant phenotypes in yeast: An integrated approach
No full textReverse engineering is the study of discovering the structure, function and operation of a device or system with the express aim to reconstruct its key functionalities. This principle is applied to many disciplines, from military, through computer engineering, to health, but also in metabolic engineering. In this context, reverse metabolic engineering examines a particular functionality or phenotype of a cell or culture and subsequently aims to reconstruct it, with the aid of targeted genetic modification, in another cell or culture. Even with increasing knowledge on targeted metabolic engineering, microbial production platforms for fuels and chemicals are often obtained by non-targeted approaches, such as mutagenesis or evolutionary engineering. Reverse engineering of the interesting traits of these microbial platforms not only provides the potential to implement and combine them in other hosts, but also allows for the protection of the resulting intellectual property. The major challenge in reverse metabolic engineering is the elucidation of the molecular mechanisms underlying the phenotype of the strains of interest. In this thesis, various techniques were evaluated for their application in reverse metabolic engineering of a diverse range of industrially relevant phenotypes in the yeast Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Simultaneously, the different analytical methods that were used in these studies were evaluated for their individual and combined contributions.BiotechnologyApplied Science
