High-frequency dynamics in the near-surface region studied by inelastic x-ray scattering: The case of liquid indium

Inelastic x-ray scattering in grazing angle geometry provides a novel tool for studying the surface and bulk lattice dynamics in a single experiment by varying the incidence angle around the critical angle of total reflection. At very small incidence angles (below the critical angle), it is possible to study the collective dynamics in a subsurface region of a few nanometres at interatomic length and time scales. An experimental study on liquid indium in the near-surface region is presented here and the results are analysed within a theoretical framework, based on classical hydrodynamics for the height-height fluctuations (capillary waves and non-propagating fluctuations) and generalized hydrodynamics for the bulk density fluctuations. The investigation reveals the presence of capillary waves in the inelastic x-ray spectra as an additional contribution at zero-energy transfer and a modification of the bulk density fluctuation contribution. A longer structural relaxation time and a larger longitudinal viscosity with respect to bulk indium are observed, similarly to related studies in confined liquids. © IOP Publishing Ltd and Deutsche Physikalische Gesellschaft

Interactive fictions e giochi immersivi. Nuove applicazioni per una teoria della risposta e(ste)tica

In light of the combination of interactive fiction and RPG (role playing game), starting from the Nineties up to the very latest evolution in ARGs (alternate reality games), this contribution aims to apply some paradigms of the Reader Response Theory and Affect Theory to the analysis of the global game industry. The purpose is to frame the migration of videogames from the digital platform to the real world through its re-evaluation as a performative event and affective process, with the conjunction between empathic and ethical reflections. It means that this medium is seen as an interrelation sistem of identity representation and social integration, starting from the analysis of the receptive phenomena to which it lends itself, which are not too different from those of the literary text

Soft phonon modes in rutile TiO2

The lattice dynamics of TiO2 in the rutile crystal structure was studied by a combination of thermal diffuse scattering, inelastic x-ray scattering, and density functional perturbation theory. We experimentally confirm the existence of a predicted anomalous soft transverse acoustic mode with energy minimum at q = (1/2 1/2 1/4). The phonon energy landscape of this particular branch is reported and compared to the calculation. The harmonic calculation underestimates the phonon energies but despite this the shape of both the energy landscape and the scattering intensities are well reproduced. We find a significant temperature dependence in the energy of this transverse acoustic mode over an extended region in reciprocal space, which point to a strong role of anharmonicity in line with a substantially anharmonic mode potential-energy surface. The reported low-energy branch is quite different from the ferroelectric mode that softens at the Brillouin zone center and may help explain anomalous convergence behavior in calculating TiO2 surface properties and is potentially relevant for real behavior in TiO2 thin films

Full Elasticity Tensor from Thermal Diffuse Scattering

We present a method for the precise determination of the full elasticity tensor from a single crystal diffraction experiment using monochromatic x rays. For the two benchmark systems calcite and magnesium oxide, we show that the measurement of thermal diffuse scattering in the proximity of Bragg reflections provides accurate values of the complete set of elastic constants. This approach allows for a reliable and model-free determination of the elastic properties and can be performed together with crystal structure investigation in the same experiment

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

High-frequency subsurface and bulk dynamics of liquid indium

We have performed bulk and surface-sensitive inelastic x-ray scattering experiments on liquid indium with 3 meV energy resolution. The experimental data are well reproduced within a generalized hydrodynamic model including structural and microscopic relaxation processes. We find a longitudinal viscosity of 22 mPa s in the near-surface region compared to 7.4 mPa s in the bulk. The origin of the increase is associated with a slowing down of the collective dynamics in a subsurface region of 4.6 nm. © 2007 The American Physical Society

In-between Bragg reflections: Thermal diffuse scattering and vibrational spectroscopy with x-rays

In the last decade diffuse scattering studies re-gained their place in the domain of lattice dynamics studies. The use of thermal diffuse scattering becomes particularly efficient when coupled with vibrational spectroscopy, where inelastic x-ray scattering can be advantageous compared to inelastic neutron scattering, and state-of-the-art ab initio calculations. We present a brief summary of the experimental and theoretical background, give an overview of the principal experimental implementations, and discuss a representative set of examples of such a combined approach

    Diffuse scattering in Ih ice

Single crystals of ice Ih, extracted from the subglacial Lake Vostok accretion ice layer (3621 m depth) were investigated by means of diffuse x-ray scattering and inelastic x-ray scattering. The diffuse scattering was identified as mainly inelastic and rationalized in the frame of ab initio calculations for the ordered ice XI approximant. Together with Monte-Carlo modelling, our data allowed reconsidering previously available neutron diffuse scattering data of heavy ice as the sum of thermal diffuse scattering and static disorder contribution. © 2014 IOP Publishing Ltd

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
