    No full text
The aim of this paper is to present archival discoveries made, among others, by the author in the Archives of the Metropolitan Curia in Cracow. The discoveries concern the manuscript of Karol Wojtyła, and are connected to his work on the postdoctoral thesis. This discovery was also presented in the context of its possible influence on the study of Wojtyła’s philosophy, based on Etienne Gilson’s conception of the method of studying the history of philosophy (the necessity of considering the whole of thought in the context of its individual elements, the context of impersonal necessity, etc.)

Standing face to face with a civil war and a danger of destabilisation of the country, King Jan Kazimierz decided that a change in his official iconography was so important that almost immediately after succeeding to the throne (1648) he reorganised his artistic court. In 1649 the outstanding portrait painter Daniel Schultz was employed and he was charged with the task of creating the image of the monarch that would be suitable for the requirements of the new authorities' propaganda and at the same time would meet the society's expectations. (It was for the same reasons that the great Roman sculptor Francesco Rossi was brought to Poland in 1651.) Of the former group of artists among others Willem Hondius was kept – as it turns out not a very able draughtsman, but a good copper engraver, who proved useful in his earlier works for the royal court, and now was indispensable for putting into effect Jan Kazimierz's propaganda aims. Analysing the portrait study of the King's brother, Karol Ferdynand Vasa (1650) from the collection of the National Museum in Gdańsk (Fig. 1), Gajewski finds in it both new principles of the art of portrait introduced into the official image by Daniel Schultz, and the artistic qualities characteristic of Schultz's painting (Fig. 2, 3). Gajewski challenges the proposition put forward in the literature of the subject saying that it is Hondius who is the author of the portrait study of Karol Ferdynand, and he claims that the author of the study is Schultz. He also thinks that the study is Schultz's drawing for the graphic portrait of Karol Ferdynand Vasa that was not used. The portrait was made (1650) by Hondius after another pattern by Daniel Schultz (Fig. 4)

The article is a critical edition of the memoirs of Karol Monné, a figure of great merit for Przemyśl, city councilor, railway inspector, a participant of the January Uprising, member of many associations and institutions, finally father of Wanda Monné – poet, translator and sculptor, fiancée of artist Artur Grottger. This document, never published before, is a valuable source of information about Karol Monné’s youth, the circumstances in which he got his education, his social and professional activities before he settled permanently in Przemyśl, and above all, his failed marriage to Wanda’s mother – Kordula Wentz. The author pays particular attention to Joanna Przybysławska, with whom Karol became involved after parting with Kordula, as well as to his children from that relationship. The published source can be treated as an important contribution to the biography of Karol Monné, which has not yet been developed

In his chief work Person and act concerning the transcendent virtue of natural ethical norms, the author, Cardinal Karol Wojtyła, stresses the autonomous decision of the single person and thereby his own responsibility. This results in a deepened comprehension of what freedom of the human being really means. Only the conception of a balance between rights and duties of man will protect our own freedom and dignity. In Cardinal Wojtyła´s philosophy we can implicitly find the current answer to the problem of equality, which can´t be solved without the transcendent outlook. The article is limited to three parts: 1. Sources of Karol Wojtyła´s philosophy; 2. The role of conscience as legislator for the person; 3. Equality of rights and duties as moral imperative of human acts. We can describe Karol Wojtyła´s thinking as an emphasizing on the transcendent perspective as well as an equal estimation of responsibility compared to rights and liberties. Karol Wojtyła´s philosophy gives us a current answer to present challenges also concerning the problem of equality, which can´t be solved without transcendent outlook. In his chief work Person and act concerning the transcendent virtue of natural ethical norms, the author, Cardinal Karol Wojtyła, stresses the autonomous decision of the single person and thereby his own responsibility. Publikacijos tikslas yra atskleisti vieną XIX a. Lietuvos muzikinio gyvenimo puslapių. Jis susijęs su pasaulinės šlovės smuiko virtuozo Karolio Józefo Lipińskio (1790-1861) vardu. Straipsnyje patikslinamas žymiojo lenko apsilankymų Vliniuje laikas, koreguojamos ir pateikiamos naujos jo koncertų datos, programos, piešiama šių viešnagių kultūrinė aplinka ir jos atstovų vertinimai. Pristatoma istorinė medžiaga yra aktuali Lietuvos muzikinio gyvenimo istorijai, ji papildo Lenkijos, Ukrainos, Rusijos, Vokietijos muzikologų tyrinėjimus, skirtus lenkų smuiko virtuozui. Reikšminiai žodžiai: 19 amžius; Vilnius; Karolis Jozefas Lipinskis; Smuiko menas; Koncertinis gyvenimas; 19th century; Vilnius; Karol Jozef Lipinski; Art of violin; Cultural (concert) lifeThis study opens one more page in the history of nineteenth-century Lithuanian music, which is related to the world-famous Polish violinist Karol Józef Lipiński (b. 1790 - d. 1861). The author revises the dates and the repertoire of his concerts held in Vilnius (1822, 1838) and presents the opinions of Vilnius citizens, thus filling the gap in the research on this violinist carried out by Polish, Ukrainian, Russian and German researchers. The facts are revealed in the context of the Lithuanian cultural life of the first half of the 19th century. Althogh the sources giving evidence of these events are confusing, the author holds the view that they are sufficient to testify the importance of the connections of the outstanding violin virtuoso with Lithuania
