Atmospheric oxidation: Formation and aging of biogenic and traffic-related secondary aerosols
Atmospheric aerosol particles affect the quality of life by influencing climate and by being a significant component of air pollution. Once a particle is released into or formed in the atmosphere, several processes begin to transform its physical and chemical properties. A considerable fraction of the particulate matter is secondary material i.e. formed from gas-to-particle conversion in the atmosphere. This secondary particle formation is an important process in the evolution of atmospheric aerosols. The aim of this thesis is to study the formation and aging of secondary aerosols by experimentally simulating atmospheric oxidation of emissions from biogenic and traffic-related sources. In this work the focus is on particle size, mass and number concentration, as well as on the thermal properties of the particles formed. These measures give insight into properties relevant for understanding the evolution of particles in the ambient atmosphere.
The thermal properties of secondary organic aerosols (SOA) formed from oxidation of monoterpenes in two oxidation flow reactors, G-FROST and PAM, and the atmospheric simulation chamber SAPHIR, was studied using a Volatility Tandem DMA (VTDMA). The detailed laboratory studies show that the formation of monoterpene SOA and its thermal properties depend on chemical structure of the precursor and oxidizing conditions. Furthermore, freshly formed monoterpene SOA comprise of compounds with a wide distribution of volatilities ranging from extremely low volatile to semi volatile compounds. Photochemical aging of SOA was studied in SAPHIR by oxidation induced by natural sun light and in PAM by exposing SOA precursors to high concentration of OH over a short time. The results reveal two opposing processes which drive the evolution of SOA volatility in the two systems.
During the course of this work an oxidation flow reactor, Go:PAM, has been developed. Go:PAM enables studies of secondary particle formation from rapidly changing emission sources, and was used to derive fuel-specific secondary particle emission factors from in-use transit buses under real-world driving conditions. Both primary emissions and the secondary particle formation of 29 buses running on conventional or on more sustainable fuels were investigated. The results emphasize the importance of taking the reduction in OH exposure into consideration when interpreting the secondary particle formation from plumes. However, independent of fuel and technology of the buses, the formation of secondary particulate mass was significantly higher than the primary particle mass. Furthermore, the results indicate there are emissions of non-fuel related compounds that are important for secondary particle formation.
This work provides insight in the formation and aging of secondary particles from biogenic and traffic-related sources. The results highlight the importance of including secondary particle formation when predicting the climate forcing of SOA and designing of air quality strategies
Commissioned By: Skånes Luftvårdsförbund.</p

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
Variations on the Author
“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship
Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis
We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis
Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts
We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued
use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation
counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more
sophisticated methods
Sustainable coastal zone planning and management
Coastal marine ecosystems all over the world are under threat due to human activities and climate change. The Maritime Spatial Planning Framework Directive (2014/89/EU) states that maritime spatial planning should support and facilitate the sustainable growth of offshore activities such as fishing, shipping, and aquaculture, while preserving, protecting, and enhancing our marine environments. To succeed, data, good knowledge and careful planning of our complex marine ecosystems are required. Models can be effective tools for coastal zone planning and management, as they enable scenario simulations and non-invasive experiments. Access to good quality data both as input to models and for model validation is essential to ensure high quality model results. However, it is often a challenge to find good data. The goal of this synthesis was to evaluate opportunities and shortcomings in how data, models and planning tools are used today and how they could be used in the future. As part of this, we have compiled, described, and evaluated different models, planning tools and data sources. We have also investigated whether there are new technologies that could help fill the gaps and shortcomings identified. For example, can data and models be combined and used to facilitate coastal zone planning and management? The results from this synthesis show that the current inventory and mapping of species and flora in the coastal zone is insufficient, to serve as a basis for reliable planning. There are many available models and planning tools adapted for the coastal zone, but in most cases basic input data are missing, such as spatial data on where different species and biotopes are located as well as bathymetry. If the underlying data for the models or planning tools is deficient, there is a high risk that the results will be misinterpreted or overinterpreted. In addition to traditional inventory, new techniques and methods should be explored. This may involve combining, for example, environmental DNA, machine learning techniques, modelling, and measurements with new low-cost sensors to acquire the data of spatial distribution of species and biotopes that are missing. Furthermore, the results from this study show that there are great opportunities in sharing and reusing data in coastal zone planning and management. There are today several data portals where data is shared, however, it can be difficult to find the right data due to insufficient metadata. A system for data management and sharing is needed. In particular, we want to highlight the value of working with linked data and persistent identifiers. In order to preserve our coastal ecosystems and enable sustainable growth of offshore activities, we must gather expertise on for example environment and digitization from both authorities, researchers and business practitioners. This will require an overarching long-term investment that includes the development of new methods and techniques as well as data management.
