    Modina (Toppah-Yellowhair) Waters, Kiowa tribal elder, details her youth including her time at St. Patrick's Indian Mission, a Catholic boarding school, located in Anadarko, Oklahoma. She describes her religious background and familiarity with both Catholicism and the Baptist church. Modina discusses her husband, marriage, and familial life and how her family is a major source of pride in her life. As a Kiowa elder, she tells of the origin of the Kiowa gourd dance among her people.The Spotlighting Oklahoma Oral History Collection is a series of thematic oral history projects as well as individual-specific interviews with the common goal of documenting the cultural and intellectual history of Oklahoma.     Exposure to human pathogenic viruses in recreational waters has been shown to cause disease outbreaks. In the context of Article 14 of the revised European Bathing Waters Directive 2006/7/EC (rBWD, CEU, 2006) a Europe-wide surveillance study was carried out to determine the frequency of occurrence of two human enteric viruses in recreational waters. Adenoviruses were selected based on their near-universal shedding and environmental survival, and noroviruses (NoV) selected as being the most prevalent gastroenteritis agent worldwide. Concentration of marine and freshwater samples was done by adsorption/elution followed by molecular detection by (RT)-PCR. Out of 1410 samples, 553 (39.2%) were positive for one or more of the target viruses. Adenoviruses, detected in 36.4% of samples, were more prevalent than noroviruses (9.4%), with 3.5% GI and 6.2% GII, some samples being positive for both GI and GII. Of 513 human adenovirus-positive samples, 63 (12.3%) were also norovirus-positive, whereas 69 (7.7%) norovirus-positive samples were adenovirus-negative. More freshwater samples than marine water samples were virus-positive. Out of a small selection of samples tested for adenovirus infectivity, approximately one-quarter were positive. Sixty percent of 132 nested-PCR adenovirus-positive samples analysed by quantitative PCR gave a mean value of over 3000 genome copies per L of water. The simultaneous detection of infectious adenovirus and of adenovirus and NoV by (RT)PCR suggests that the presence of infectious viruses in recreational waters may constitute a public health risk upon exposure. These studies support the case for considering adenoviruses as an indicator of bathing water quality

    Dataset for: Sediment and Nutrient Transport Through a Reservoir Sequence Along a Large River System

    Reservoirs are highly effective at sequestering both sediments and sediment-bound nutrients, such as silts and phosphorus (P), but are also capable of depositing significant quantities of nutrients with more complex biogeochemical pathways, like nitrogen (N). Because of the growing prevalence of human altered watersheds and regulated rivers, there is a growing need to understand how reservoirs function both individually and as reservoir sequences within large rivers and their watersheds. Models have simulated the overall efficiency and drivers of reservoir nutrient deposition, but few have considered how a sequence of reservoirs alter deposition as an interconnected watershed-sediment-transport-system. In this study, we collected sediment cores from a six-reservoir sequence along a 5th – 6th order stream receiving treated waters from a large metropolitan area in the Southeast United States. Using paleolimnological techniques, we compared nutrient deposition to reservoir morphological qualities and primary producer community structure during the past ~50 years. Our findings suggest phosphorus deposition is associated with reservoir order downstream of the primary nutrient source, nitrogen deposition is linked to reservoir water retention time, and N:P is most strongly linked to reservoir surface area and watershed population density. Our results were strongly influenced by a large upstream and metropolitan nutrient source, fairly common in large rivers, but under different conditions of nutrient loading, reservoirs may express other nutrient depositional patterns

    The 4th edition of Brown and Marriott’s ADR Principles and Practice, due for publication in 2018, will be revised and updated by a new author team comprising William Wood QC, Brick Court Chambers; Ben Waters, Senior Lecturer in Law at Canterbury Christ Church University; and Shirley Shipman, Principal Lecturer in Law at Oxford Brookes University School of Law.     Average seasonal changes in chlorophyll a in Icelandic waters

    The standard algorithms used to derive sea surface chlorophyll a concentration from remotely sensed ocean colour data are based almost entirely on the measurements of surface water samples collected in open sea (case 1) waters which cover ~60% of the worlds oceans, where strong correlations between reflectance and chlorophyll concentration have been found. However, satellite chlorophyll data for waters outside the defined case 1 areas, but derived using standard calibrations, are frequently used without reference to local in situ measurements and despite well-known factors likely to lead to inaccuracy. In Icelandic waters, multiannual averages of 8-d composites of SeaWiFS chlorophyll concentration accounted for just 20% of the variance in a multiannual dataset of in situ chlorophyll a measurements. Nevertheless, applying penalized regression spline methodology to model the spatial and temporal patterns of in situ measurements, using satellite chlorophyll as one of the predictor variables, improved the correlation considerably. Day number, representing seasonal variation, accounted for substantial deviation between SeaWiFS and in situ estimates of surface chlorophyll. The final model, using bottom depth and bearing to the sampling location as well as the two variables mentioned above, explained 49% of the variance in the fitting dataset
