Animal products brought into Brazil illegally through passengers' luggage can be the source of animal diseases and epidemics that affect Brazilian fauna, the human population and the country's economy. The main consenting bodies at an airport are the Special Secretariat of the Federal Revenue of Brazil, the International Agricultural Surveillance System, the National Health Surveillance Agency and the Brazilian Institute of the Environment and Renewable Resources. VIGIAGRO is the body responsible for overseeing the entry of products of animal origin. Travelers' luggage can be classified as accompanied or unaccompanied luggage, which may be subject to physical and documentary inspection, depending on the criteria used by the Tax Auditor or Responsible Agent. Normative Instruction No. 11 of May 9, 2019, from the Ministry of Agriculture, Livestock and Supply informs a list of permitted and prohibited products to be brought in luggage. Products that are not within the requirements required by law must be seized and destroyed. In addition to electronic products or products with a high added value, products of animal and vegetable origin must also be declared as the traveler's goods. The irregular entry of non-conforming products may result in the application of a warning or fine. The objective of this work is to demonstrate and conceptualize the attributions of the consenting bodies, expose and elucidate the set of conducts that configure the act of inspection itself. In view of this scenario, the work carried out by VIGIAGRO in conjunction with the other consenting bodies, mainly the Federal Revenue Service, becomes indispensable

Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods

Laminitis associated with the equine metabolic syndrome: a systematic review of the risk factors and pathophysiological events

    No full text
Laminitis is defined as a foot disease characterized by loss in the integrity of the connection between the dermal and epidermal lamina and is the second leading cause of death in horses. The one with the highest occurrence is called endocrinopathic laminitis, which is marked by tissue insulin resistance or hyperinsulinemia and can be caused by equine metabolic syndrome (EMS) or pituitary pars intermedia dysfunction (PPID). The purpose of this review was to determine evidence on the risk factors involved in the development of laminitis associated with EMS. The search strategy was performed using the terms laminitis, metabolic syndrome, and equidae in seven databases. The main eligibility criteria were studies including evaluation of risk factors for the occurrence of EMS-associated laminitis and ruled out dysfunction of the pars intermedia of the pituitary in the evaluated animals. A total of 688 studies were found, with 383 duplicates excluded. Three hundred and five studies were reviewed for title and abstract. The first selection included 85 articles for reading in full and of these only 37 met the eligibility criteria and were included in this study. There was insufficient evidence to determine race, sex and age as risk factors for EMS laminitis. Two studies confirmed the development of laminitis from hyperinsulinemia induction. Eight studies showed strong evidence of the association between higher basal insulin concentration in laminitic animals compared to non-laminitic animals. Obesity was associated with episodes of laminitis in 6 studies, also finding evidence of hypertriglyceridemia and hypoadponectinemia in laminitic and obese animals. Hyperinsulinemia in endocrinopathic laminitis associated with EMS is the main risk factor triggering the various pathophysiological pathways that occur simultaneously causing changes in laminar tissue, confirming once again its role in the pathogenesis of the disease. Obesity is a risk factor for exacerbating insulin resistance, making weight and insulin levels control essential for prevention of endocrinopathic laminitis. The absence of a second reviewer in the selection of studies and the low number of epidemiological studies of endocrinopathic laminitis were the main limitations found by the authors. This is the first systematic review performed on the topic in question.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)CAPES: 00

    koamabayili/VECTRON-author-checklist: VECTRON author checklist

We have done our best to complete the author checklist relating to the use of animals in the hut study. Note that the objective for the hut study was to evaluate the IRS treatment applications for residual efficacy against Anopheles mosquitoes, including the local An. coluzzii mosquito population. Cows were only used to attract mosquitoes into the huts and no tests were carried out directly on the cows. The author checklist is intended for use with studies where experiments are carried out on animals, which is why we have had such difficulty in completing this for the hut study, as many of the questions do not relate to how the cows were used

Blood glucose and lactate in horses with colic

Auxiliary parameters have been investigated to define the prognosis in equine colic. The objectives were to evaluate the relation of blood and peritoneal concentrations of glucose and lactate at admission with survival, type of treatment (surgical or clinical) and type of intestinal lesion (ischemic or nonischemic). Blood and peritoneal fluid samples were collected from 89 colic horses admitted at the Veterinary Hospital (HV) of the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine and Animal Science (FMVZ) at UNESP, Botucatu. The samples were stored in microtubes and later evaluated in an analytical electro lactate and enzyme glucose analyzer. Hyperglycemia was observed in 41% of colic horses in this study. Blood glucose concentration was related to surgical treatment (P = 0.0003) and mortality (P = 0.0372) and blood glucose in the peritoneal fluid was higher in animals referred for surgery (P = 0.0114). Blood and peritoneal lactate concentrations showed a strong correlation (r = 0.6879; P <0.0001) and were related to ischemic intestinal injuries, mortality and surgical treatment. Blood glucose and lactate concentrations showed a strong correlation (r = 0.5802; P <0.0001), as well as their concentrations in the peritoneal fluid (r = 0.1959; P <0.0196). Glucose concentrations in blood and peritoneal fluid also showed a correlation (r = 0.7221; P <0.0001). Hyperglycemia was associated with an unfavorable survival prognosis and indication for surgical treatment. The results of this study reinforce the applicability of lactatemia as an indicator of survival prognosis, surgical treatment and the presence of ischemic intestinal lesions.Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES)CAPES: 00
