    Surgical Considerations of Intractable Mesial Temporal Lobe Epilepsy

    Surgery of temporal lobe epilepsy is the best opportunity for seizure freedom in medically intractable patients. The surgical approach has evolved to recognize the paramount importance of the mesial temporal structures in the majority of patients with temporal lobe epilepsy who have a seizure origin in the mesial temporal structures. For those individuals with medically intractable mesial temporal lobe epilepsy, a selective amygdalohippocampectomy surgery can be done that provides an excellent opportunity for seizure freedom and limits the resection to temporal lobe structures primarily involved in seizure genesis

    Diagnosis and Surgical Treatment of Epilepsy

    Epilepsy is a common neurological disease that can affect all ages. Although the majority of people with epilepsy can have excellent seizure control with medication, about 30% will fail anti-epileptic drugs. For those with medically intractable epilepsy, recurrent seizures lead to elevated mortality and injury risks, and the seizures themselves are socially disabling. Fortunately, for many people with intractable epilepsy, epilepsy can be cured or seizures better controlled with surgery. Localization of the seizure focus followed by surgical resection provide the best opportunities to cure epilepsy. Having a better understanding of the neuro-anatomy and physiology of epilepsy improves our ability to define the epileptic network and effectively treat epilepsy. Minimal access surgical approaches result in more rapid recovery from surgery, less pain, and more satisfied patients. For individuals without an opportunity to cure their epilepsy, new and emerging technologies can improve their quality of life by preventing injuries and reducing seizure frequency and severity. This Special Issue will highlight advances in the diagnosis and surgical treatment of epilepsy, including imaging and electroencephalography (EEG) approaches to defining the epileptic focus, understanding the epileptic network, and characterizing the anatomical substrate of epilepsy

    COMMUNICATING THE LANGUAGE OF BUSINESS TO NON-BUSINESS LEARNERS

    Thesis (Ph.D.) - Indiana University, School of Education, 2020This study is situated in a course taught by the author who takes the position that non-business majors approach their learning differently from business majors. Many non-business majors carry concerns regarding not having prior accounting coursework, negative experiences or lack confidence in the domain of mathematics. Through personal reflection, student feedback, reading current literature and empirical findings, I have made additional adjustments to the course design, instructional strategies employed and/or weighting and type of assessments to achieve the stated outcomes of the course. The main research question for this study is as follows: How does using surface and deep instructional strategies relate to student scores when examined by a prior knowledge group (business vs. non-business)? This study utilizes the mixed methods approach with data gathered from the statement of student goals from the first week of the course, student assessment scores, a linear regression model in STATA and the course/instructor’s evaluations at the conclusion of the course. Analysis of the responses in my course indicate that students’ goals were primarily cognition (understanding). The results also indicate that business majors continue to perform better in a statistically significant way on polling response accuracy. Although not statistically significant, non-business majors had higher average mean scores for in-class activities. As was found in prior studies, the grade point average (GPA) had a significant effect on student performance in the course overall. As a result of this study, changes to lecture delivery and student reminders of activities have been incorporated into the course

    “Making Alcatraz Amazing”: The Alcatraz Cellhouse Tour

    In 1987 the National Park Service and Golden Gate National Parks Conservancy launched the Alcatraz Cellhouse Tour as part of the interpretive program educating visitors about the island and its history. Using an existing format made possible several years previously by Sony Walkman™ technology, the designers framed this individual, and innovative, audio tour as a means for visitors to experience the cellhouse through the voices of people incarcerated there, or living and working there, during the years when it served as an active federal prison. Such a design called for different decisions about content, scripting and moving people through space than had been required for ranger-led tours or the lecture-type audio tours prevalent at the time. The original tour has been updated continuously since its launch, and experienced by millions of visitors in multiple languages. The author of this case experienced the tour in 1988 and interviewed key designers in 2014.</jats:p
