The Town Mouse and the Country Mouse: An Aesop Fable Retold & Illustrated

    No full text
Helen Ward is giving herself generously to fables! Unwitting Wisdom, King of the Birds, The Rooster and the Fox, and The Hare and the Tortoise precede this book. Ward sets the story at Christmas time in New York in the 1930's. She develops the story nicely, first by dwelling on the country mouse's love of the seasons in the country. Next she lets the city mouse demonstrate what she aptly suggests: he is a mouse with a lot to say. The illustrations are lavish two-page spreads replete with detail. My favorite shows a fenced elevator in the city going up beyond our eye level with the mouse on it behind the person transporting a Christmas tree. What happens in the city is not altogether clear to me. Eventually a pug dog appears. Even as he is running, the country mouse thinks back to his beloved home. He ends up just a country mouse dreaming of spring. A final image shows a mouse cleverly both inside and outside a round of blue cheese. Originally published in England in 2011. This is a rare book in present days that has a dust-jacket distinct from the book's cover. The latter is red cloth, the former a gold-background image of two mice among leaves and flowers. An oval sticker on the front cover proclaims We believe in picture books! This book aptly rewards that belief. This is a hardbound book (hard cover)This book has a dust jacket (book cover)First printingRetold & Illustrated by Helen War

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Assessment of final year medical students in a simulated ward::developing content validity for an assessment instrument

    No full text
Performance assessment is becoming increasingly important in both undergraduate and postgraduate assessment. At present, the tools used to assess a medical student’s performance evaluate only their care for one patient at a time. The development of the simulated ward has provided an opportunity to assess how a final year medical student would perform caring for a variety of patients simultaneously in a realistic ward environment, without risk to patients. This paper describes the development of valid assessment criteria using a modified Delphi method

A literature review exploring student midwives' experiences of continuity of mentorship on the labour ward

    No full text
Background: Continuity of mentorship is central to students' clinical placement experience. Despite a plethora of studies investigating student-mentor relationships and how it affects grading, limited attention has been paid to the extent to which a lack of continuity of mentorship affects placement experience. Aims: To explore the importance of mentor continuity on labour ward for pre-registration midwifery students. Methods: A database search was conducted using the terms: ‘student midwives’, ‘continuity’, ‘mentor’, ‘preceptor’, ‘mentorship’, ‘labour ward’, ‘delivery suite’ and ‘experiences.’ Findings: Continuity of mentorship enhances learning and improves clinical practice experience. Conclusions: A lack of continuity affects all aspects of student midwives’ experiences of the labour ward. Good mentor practice should focus on continuity and the introduction of co-mentoring, where a student is mentored by at least 2 midwives, in order to reduce the strain on mentors while retaining the feeling of belonging that student midwives value

Exploring Emptiness: An Investigation of MA and MU in My Sonic Composition Practice

    No full text
The commentary investigates Japanese aesthetics of space, silence and emptiness - ma and mu - that informed my compositional practice during the research period 2012 - 2015. The portfolio comprises text compositions and sound installations in which forms of micro events and sustained events are employed. Throughout, the emphasis is on my personal engagement with, and manifestation of emptiness that concerns a particular model of listening and perception. Chapter 1 discusses six primary research areas: ma and mu, material, text, form, listening and perception. Firstly, I introduce ma and mu by examining noh culture and Zeami's teaching of senu hima (where there is no-action) in the context of my personal approaches to music. The following subjects are then used to contextualise my PhD practice by means of examples from various composers and visual artists. Here, these particular and enigmatic concepts are explored through Japanese art as well as Western contemporary works by Alvin Lucier, Eliane Radigue and those of the Wandelweiser collective. Part 2 provides contextual commentaries on selected compositions from the portfolio that mostly articulate my aesthetics in relation to the topics covered in Chapter 1. koso koso addresses my methodologies to investigate the essence of senu hima, followed by treow that discusses my approach to materials and the importance of space. I move on to grade two and grade two extended in order to examine text scores, and then, look into Espèces d'espaces 03 and 04 as examples of musical forms that I employ. Finally, listening and perception are investigated through the compositions gnome and con.de.structuring. Throughout, I describe how my works explore emptiness as a result of my particular emphasis on listening over composing

An evaluation of a virtual COVID-19 ward to accelerate the supported discharge of patients from an acute hospital setting

open access articleBackground/Aims In response to high numbers of hospital admissions as a result of COVID-19, a virtual ward was implemented to achieve accelerated discharge from hospital without compromising patient safety. This study assessed the impact of this virtual ward for patients admitted to the acute hospital setting with COVID-19. Methods A community-based intervention using digital technology and a multi‑disciplinary team of specialist clinicians to monitor patients at home was established. An analysis was carried out within the service investigating the safety, health outcomes and resource use of the first 65 patients discharged from hospital into the virtual respiratory ward. Results Red days, where an urgent response was required, decreased from 33.8% of patients in their first 3 days at the virtual ward to 10.8% in their final 3 days (P=0.002). Four patients were readmitted to hospital, all for clotting disorders. There was one death, which was deemed unrelated to COVID-19. Length of stay was also reduced by 40.3% (P<0.001) and estimated overall savings were £68 052 (£1047 per patient). Conclusions The virtual ward appeared to assist with earlier discharges, had a low rate of clinically necessary re-admissions, and seemed to reduce costs without compromising patient safety. The authors believe that this intervention could be applied across other NHS trusts facing similar capacity issues as a result of COVID-19

The Rational Method in Reading: Introductory Second Reader.

    No full text
Formerly the property of the Omaha School System, this reader is in poor shape, with lots of tears and marks. See 1899 for the third reader in this series. This volume contains four fables. FS (86), embellished with three nice illustrations, plays on gender and class differences as Lady Fox sends her servant to Mr. Stork. At the end, she trips away sadder and wiser. The Fox and the Cat and The Greedy Wolf follow. Later (137), two fables are put together. The dog who lost his meat in the river is the petulant dog who stays in the manger when called to dinner. Rational reading includes letters crossed out, sounds marked, and syllables separated. This is a hardbound book (hard cover)Edward G. Ward and Mary A. War
