Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed

The atmospheric water vapour is one of the main variables controlling the greenhouse effect and it plays a crucial role in the global energy cycle. In this context the polar regions which act as global heat sinks are especially important. This study uses observations from the Global Positioning System (GPS) to investigate changes of the integrated atmospheric water vapour. It is based on a reprocessing of a global GPS network consisting of 195 stations. A strong emphasis was placed on the investigation of the accuracy and the homogeneity of the GPS derived water vapour time series. After correcting the inhomogeneities interannual ?uctuations in the precipitable water can be determined from GPS data with an accuracy of 0.3 mm in water column height. As a result, the interannual variations in the water vapour content are in the order of one millimetre over Europe and over large areas of North America. They are mainly related to thermodynamic effects. In the tropics and in the south east of the USA water vapour anomalies can reach 3 to 5 mm caused by dynamic processes connected to the Southern Oscillation. As one application of the estimated GPS water vapour time series a validation of water vapour from the global numerical weather prediction model of the National Center for Environmental Prediction (NCEP) was carried out. Over Europe and large parts of North America the seasonal signal and the interannual variations of the water vapour are very well reproduced by NCEP. Hence, in these regions NCEP presents a good database for area-wide investigations of long-term changes in the water vapour content. However, in Antarctica and in the Tropics the seasonal and also the interannual signals of the NCEP water vapour are strongly underestimated by 25% to 40%. A second application of the estimated GPS water vapour time series is the validation of satellite-based radiometer measurements over Antarctica. A good agreement was found between the water vapour derived from GPS and radiometer data. The water vapour time series estimated in this study provide a good basis for further weather and climate related investigations

Global terrestrial reference systems and their realizations, the so called reference frames, are fundamental for the description of the Earth's shape and its orientation in space and for referencing changes on the Earth's surface and its planetary environment. The Realization of the International Terrestrial Reference System is one of the main tasks of geodesy. It is achieved by the combination of observation data of different space geodetic techniques. The most important techniques are the Very Long Baseline Interferometry, Satellite Laser Ranging and the Global Positioning System. Each of these techniques has individual strengths with respect to the estimation of geodetic parameters and contributes significantly to the realization of the terrestrial reference system. In this thesis methods are developed, which allow for the realization of a time-dependent as well as for a time-independent reference frame from space observation data. Both methods are based on the combination of free normal equations which result from the homogeneous analysis of the different observation types. This approach is a good approximation for the direct combination of observations, which has not yet been implemented successfully. The International Earth Rotation and Reference Systems Service (IERS) computes reference frames from input data with high temporal resolution. For the most recent solution, the ITRF2005, station coordinates and Earth rotation parameters (pole coordinates and UT1-UTC) were estimated consistently for the first time. In analogy to the IERS standards, input data with daily and weekly resolution are used in this work. In addition to the above mentioned parameters, nutation and troposphere parameters are considered. The time-dependent and the time-independent reference frame are based on observation data of different time spans (two years and one day respectively). Consequently, they are characterised by a different parameterisation and show discrepancies with respect to information content, validity, and accuracy. This requires the development of individual combination models for both realizations. Usually, observations of different space geodetic techniques do not refer to a common reference point. Neighbouring reference points of different techniques are combined by introducing terrestrial difference vectors. In some cases the comparison of the terrestrial difference vectors and the coordinate differences computed from the solutions of the space geodetic techniques show large discrepancies. Thus, the selection of difference vectors which are suitable for the combination is essential. Two criteria for the selection are formulated: The consistency of the combined solution shall be maximal and the geometry of the technique specific station networks shall not be changed by the combination. The consistency is quantified on the basis of the pole coordinates. It is demonstrated, that the pole coordinates are qualified to describe the consistency, since they are global parameters that can be estimated from the observations of all techniques. For both realizations it is shown, that the combination leads to an improvement of accuracy for most of the parameters compared to the technique specific solutions. For some parameters an improvement of 10\% or more is achieved. Additionally, a method for the combination of troposphere parameters is developed and tested for the computation of the time-independent reference frame. The computation of the troposphere parameters leads to a further increase of the accuracy of the combined solution. The comparison of the time-dependent and the time-independent reference frame discloses the individual potentials of both frames. Based on the results, recommendations for the improvement of official combination products are formulated. The most important suggestions are, that the combination of space geodetic techniques shall be performed on the level of normal equations, or if possible on the level of observations. Furthermore, the individual characteristics of the parameters should be used more effectively in the combination process

    Variations on the Author

“Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature. Finally, we show by means of an example that our findings have a high practical relevance.information science;Pearson correlation;cosine;similarity measure;author cocitation analysis

The geodetic observation techniques contribute in several ways to the research of the system Earth: On the one hand they observe the recent processes and their variations in time directly, on the other hand they provide the basis for a consistent description of all effects in a consistent geometrical and gravimetrical reference. Within the project Global Geodetic Observing System (GGOS) of the International Association of Geodesy (IAG) the prerequisites for the combination of geodetic observation techniques, models and analysis strategies shall be created in order to enable a high accurate monitoring of the system Earth with consistent geodetic parameters. In this context the realization of geodetic reference systems with highest accuracy is a central task of the GGOS and subject of this thesis. At present, a common realization of the Terrestrial Reference System (TRS) consists of station positions according to a specific epoch and their linear changes with time. In this concept non-linear station motions yield to residual variations, which may be used for geoscientific interpretations. The natural origin of a global TRS, and this is also the case for the International Terrestrial Reference System (ITRS), is the center of mass of the system Earth (CM). This origin can be realized by observations of dynamic satellite techniques, such as GPS. In a consistent approach satellite orbits, stations positions and the lower degrees of harmonic surface mass load coefficients are estimated simultaneously. The ITRS is realized based on reprocessed observations of a global GPS network. In a joint effort TU Dresden, TU München and GFZ Potsdam analyzed the data of more than 200 stations of the observation time span 1994 to 2007. After an introduction to the basic principles of GPS and its major error sources the data analysis is described. This covers a homogeneous analysis over the entire period, improvements in atmosphere modeling and antenna phase center modeling as well as the usage of normal equations for the ITRS realization. The determined Terrestrial Reference Frame (TRF) is named Potsdam-Dresden-Reprocessing 2007 (PDR07). In order to assess the accuracy and stability of this TRF a variety of analyses is performed. For example, PDR07 is compared to other ITRS realizations, such as the ITRF2000, the ITRF2005 as well as the realizations of the International GNSS Service (IGS) IGb00 and IGS05. GPS campaign observations are often used to investigate geodynamic phenomena. The realization of the ITRS with highest accuracy in these regional GPS networks is essential for the geodynamic interpretation of the results. A regional GPS network in Antarctica is used to investigate the optimal way to realize the ITRS in such networks and the accuracy of linear station rates determined from campaign observations. Subsequently, the station rates are used for geodynamic interpretations: The horizontal station rates are used to determine the movement of the Antarctic Plate in the concept of global plate kinematics and to assess the inner stability of the Antarctic Plate. The vertical station rates are used to evaluate recent crustal deformations caused by glacial isostatic adjustment and recent mass changes of the Antarctic ice sheet

Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
