Foreign institutional investor trading in Chinese A-share markets
Purpose: This paper addresses the topic “The interaction between financial institutions and firms in the nonfinancial sectors” in the special issue of “Banking and finance in China.” The purpose of this paper is to examine the trading behavior and price effects of foreign institutions under the celebrated Qualified Foreign Institutional Investor (QFII) scheme on all non-financial firms in the Chinese A-share markets. Design/methodology/approach: Using quarterly equity-level foreign institution transactions from 2005Q1 to 2011Q4 in the Chinese A-share market, the author finds a positive and significant contemporaneous relationship between foreign flows and equity returns. For each quarter, the author sorts the stocks into ten portfolios based on the percentage of foreign flows, and employs the bivariate vector autoregression (VAR) model to examine the contemporaneous association in detail. Findings: Foreign institutions in the Chinese A-share markets do not show positive or negative feedback trading; however, their flows have a strong impact on future equity returns because of informational advantage. Additionally, different associations are found between foreign flows and equity returns. Research limitations/implications: Constraints on data availability exist, and a quarterly dimension is too coarse to provide a statistically precise result, although certain related papers use quarterly dimension data. Further research is required using higher frequency data. Originality/value: This paper provides a first look at foreign institution trading patterns and price effects on local equity returns in the Chinese A-share markets. Additionally, the equity level data allow the author to exclude the stocks that were not bought by foreign institutions and to detect the “pure effect” of foreign flows on equity return
Draposa zhanjiangensis Yin, Wang, Peng & Xie 1995, comb. nov.
Draposa zhanjiangensis (Yin, Wang, Peng & Xie, 1995) comb. nov. Pardosa zhanjiangensis Yin, Wang, Peng & Xie, 1995: 74, 77, figs 18–22 (Ƥ). Yin et al. 1997: 281, fig. 133 (Ƥ, identical with previous reference). Song et al. 1999, figs 199 Q, 200 B (Ƥ from Yin et al. 1995). Type material. Holotype Ƥ: China, Guangdong Province, Zhanjiang City (21 ° 12 'N 110 ° 24 'E) (together with 13 1 Ƥ paratypes) in Hunan Biology Research Institute, Changsha, not examined. Diagnosis. Male may be distinguished by shape of tegular apophysis, notably the somewhat squared projection in the basal half (Yin et al. 1995, fig. 22; Yin et al. 1997, fig. 133 e) [acute projection(-s) in the other known congenerics], female by shape of epigyne, notably size and form of tongue-like septum (Yin et al. 1995, fig. 19; Yin et al. 1997, fig. 133 b; Song et al. 1999, fig. 200 B). Remarks. The illustrations supplied with the original description show details typical for the genus Draposa, e. g., the shape of the tegular apophysis and the presence of a subpaleal sclerite in the male palp as well as the shape of the epigyne, with a tongue-like septum, in the female (Yin et al.: references above) Material of a congener from Malaysia [Sarawak, Bako National Park (1 ° 44 'N 110 ° 28 'E), grassy patch on sandy seashore, 17 October 1979 (K. & B.Bremer), 13 4 Ƥ (Fig. 56)] and Indonesia [Belitung (2 ° 50 'S 107 ° 55 'E), sandy seashore, 27 August 1899 (C. Aurivillius), 13 2 Ƥ] is present in NHRS. This is very close to or conspecific with Draposa zhanjiangensis. Norma-Rashid & Li (2009) reported specimens identified as D. zhanjiangensis from the island of Tioman off the east coast of Peninsular Malaysia. Comparison with Chinese specimens should be undertaken in order to confirm conspecificity. Two females of Draposa in NHRS from Indonesia [Sumatra, Medan (3 ° 35 'N 98 ° 40 'E), 1920 (E. Mjöberg)] have epigynes with a considerably shorter tongue-like septum (Fig. 57) compared with D. zhanjiangensis from China (Yin et al.: references above) and the material from Sarawak (Fig. 56); these specimens may belong to a close, presumably undescribed species. Distribution. China: Guangdong (but see Remarks above).Published as part of Kronestedt, Torbjörn, 2010, Draposa, a new wolf spider genus from South and Southeast Asia (Araneae: Lycosidae), pp. 31-54 in Zootaxa 2637 on pages 52-53, DOI: 10.5281/zenodo.19846
The data of Depression, Anxiety, Stress Scale-21 and Foreign Language Classroom Anxiety Scale from the students of a Chinese High school
Foreign language anxiety has been receiving increasing attention in the literature of psychology and second language learning. And many focus on the relationship between FL anxiety and achievement. However, few studies have researched the relationship between general emotional distress and FL anxiety. The present study recruited 600 first-year Chinese high school students aged 14 to 16 to complete the foreign language classroom anxiety scale (FLCAS, Horwitz, Horwitz & Cope, 1986) and Depression, Anxiety, and Stress Scale-21 (S. H. Lovibond & P. F. Lovibond, 1995). FL anxiety and stress and anxiety were found higher, while depression was lower among the participants than previous studies regarding different age groups. Factor analysis was also conducted on FLCAS and found five components of FL anxiety: unconfidence of English learning, anxiety from teachers and peers, fear of proactive and passive speaking, negative self-consciousness of speaking ability, and attitudes towards language classroom. Correlation and regression analysis found an inverse relationship between some components of FL anxiety and achievement. Furthermore, the present study also revealed a linkage influence of factors of general emotional distress on components of FL anxiety and a linkage influence of factors of FL anxiety on FL achievement through these methods

Pyramid IPOs on the Chinese Growth Enterprise Market
In this article, we investigate initial public offerings (IPOs) of high-tech firms on the Chinese Growth Enterprise Market (GEM). Almost half of the GEM IPOs are set up in pyramid structures. The likelihood of a pyramid structure increases with the size of the IPO firm and state control. Our results do not suggest that pyramids are set up to overcome financial constraints. However, we document that pyramid IPOs are discounted before the IPO. The subscription price-to-book ratio is significantly lower for pyramid IPOs, and this translates into higher underpricing. We conclude that IPO investors demand a higher risk premium when investing in pyramid IPOs
Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis
The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation
counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings
are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that
only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into
account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed. Reasons for these effects are discussed
