    Public Opinion Evolution Based on the Two-Dimensional Theory of Emotion and Top2Vec-RoBERTa

    This paper applies the concept of symmetry to the design of a research methodology for public opinion evolution, emphasizing that both the construction and analysis processes of the method embody symmetrical principles. In today’s information age, dominated by social media, online platforms have become crucial venues for information dissemination. While the free flow of information promotes public participation, it also introduces certain challenges. Therefore, analyzing the evolution of public opinion and extracting public sentiment holds significant practical value for managing online public sentiment. This study takes the Zibo barbecue incident as a case study, utilizing the two-dimensional theory of emotion and Top2Vec for thematic analysis of public opinion comments. By combining sentiment dictionary methods with the RoBERTa model, we conduct a sentiment polarity analysis of public opinion comments. The results show that the RoBERTa model achieved an accuracy of 98.46% on the test set. The proposed method effectively uncovers public sentiment biases and the influencing factors on public emotions during the evolution of public opinion events, providing a more comprehensive understanding of the emotional dynamics throughout the development of public sentiment. This deeper insight aids in addressing issues related to public opinion more effectively

    Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     Auto-tuned optimized parallel I/O for GIScience and spatial applications

    Reading and writing big data is increasingly becoming a major bottleneck of using high-performance computing systems as we are heading towards the Exascale era. An unprecedented amount of data is being produced everyday by different sources. On the other hand, the computation power of HPC systems is getting scaled to hundreds of thousands cores. However, for an application to be able to utilize this much data and computation power, using I/O effectively is a must. One of the fields dealing with huge amount of data is geographic information science. In this thesis, we have implemented a parallel I/O library specialized for spatial data analysis in GIScience, capable of treating different I/O patterns such as Row-Wise, Column-Wise and Block-Wise I/O. We then establish an auto-tuning framework for finding optimal parallel I/O configurations. This auto-tuning framework is based on genetic algorithm and works on a range of configurations from the parallel file system all the way up to spatial data-analysis applications.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     A CyberGIS environment for spatiotemporal analysis: a case study of China mortality data

    This thesis describes an online CyberGIS (cyberinfrastructure-based geographic information system) environment for a public health application. This CyberGIS application represents a new GIS application modality for protected access to public health data and related CyberGIS analytical and visualization services based on service-oriented architecture. A novel CyberGIS Open Service Application Programming Interface is employed to allow a number of users to execute multiple spatial analyses simultaneously on the backend powerful cyberinfrastructure. The user-centric interface of the CyberGIS application provides transparent access to cyberinfrastructure resources, which helps make the application scalable to the potential growth of the application users and pertinent public health researchers and users. A case study is designed to examine spatial distribution characteristics of mortality rates in the mainland of China for the period of 1991 – 2000, using a suite of spatial data analysis methods integrated within the CyberGIS application that supports interactive exploratory analysis. The application demonstrates the novelty and utility of CyberGIS in this public health case study in the following four aspects. 1. Spatial pattern analyses combined with a set of visualization tools built on a CyberGIS infrastructure allow users to interactively explore the spatiotemporal distributions of heterogeneous data. 2. A highly interactive and easy-to-access user interface supporting temporal analysis allows users without in-depth GIS technical skills to experience an easy, efficient, and secure way to gain insights into the data. 3. Multiple users can access the application based on cloud computing support. 4.     Spatial provenance: A case study on geological carbon sequestration

    The collection, preservation, and accessibility of detailed lineage information derived from the handling of spatial data—spatial provenance—requires effective management of transformational workflows and associated metadata for workflow components. The spatial provenance model presented in this thesis captures important information for understanding spatial data lineage and related data transformation tasks that are chained together in operational workflows. This research has led to the development of an integrated solution for capturing and managing spatial provenance by interfacing with, and building upon, existing geographic information systems (GIS) software. The challenge of organizing, storing, and ultimately accessing spatial provenance information is tackled by exploiting semantic representations and database technologies to enable the comparison of alternative and/or historical iterations of spatial data processing workflows. Using a case study based on geological carbon sequestration research, this thesis examines source data revisions and updates to a spatial analysis over time. Experiments in tracking the spatial propagation of potential errors and comparing temporal attributes of alternative workflows of processing spatial data verify the effectiveness of the spatial provenance model and its implementation based on semantic representation and query. The case study and experiments serve as a proof-of-concept scenario to demonstrate the benefits of a provenance-enhanced spatial analytical workflow framework.     Credibility assessment of volunteered geographic information for emergency management: a Bayesian network modeling approach

    An emerging paradigm of volunteered geographic information (VGI) in the field of Geography was resulted from recent advances of GPS equipped mobile devices such as the iPhone, and the amount of geographic information and its promptness has been dramatically increased with the participation of volunteers. Although there are many fields that can utilize the capabilities of VGI, conventional quality control processes are often not applicable to VGI. Therefore, it is essential to balance the prompt availability of VGI with the unverified character of its contents. For this purpose, a credibility model approach measuring the credibility of VGI is presented in this thesis to promote the democratization of geographic information from a traditional top-down process, to a revolutionary bottom-up process. For a plausible inference of credibility, a computational credibility model was constructed based on a Bayesian network (BN), providing a convenient way to tackle diverse problems in which conclusions are not warranted logically but rather predicted probabilistically. This research also has led to the development of an integrated framework to acquire, infer, store, and visualize detailed credibility information. Using a case study designed to simulate the process of credibility assessments of the volunteered geographic data from the Haiti earthquake, this thesis examines the behavioral characteristics and the benefits of the developed credibility model. In a set of experiments, damage assessments with and without the credibility assessments are conducted and compared with an official assessments by the Haitian government and international organizations. The experiments have not only demonstrated microscopic effects on the individual data, but also showed the macroscopic variation of the overall damage patterns by the credibility model. The case study and experiments serve as a proof-of-concept to validate the benefits of the credibility assessment framework.     Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
