Design of a scalable nano university satellite bus (IlliniSat-2 bus) command and data handling system and power system
IlliniSat-2 bus is the second generation of a general model on which multiple-production of CubeSats are based upon. The IlliniSat-2 bus consists of Command and Data Handling system, Power Generation and Distribution system, Attitude Determination and Control system and Radio system. The IlliniSat-2 is required to be capable of operating a nanosatellite from size 1.5U (10x10x17cm) to 6U (10x22.6x36.6cm) and carrying up to three science payloads. The challenge with IlliniSat-2 bus is the requirement for the wide-range scalability. The major contribution of this work includes the requirements, design, testing, and validation of two parts of the IlliniSat-2 bus systems: Command and Data Handling system and Power Generation and Distribution system. This work also contributes the lessons learned throughout the implementation of the flight hardware. So far, five missions are using IlliniSat-2 bus to carry their science payloads: LAICE, CubeSail, SpaceICE, SASSI^2 and CAPSat. CubeSail satellite was fully constructed and delivery to the launcher on April 12th, 2018. The tentative launch date as of this publication is August 31st, 2018. SpaceICE, SASSI^2 and CAPSat are three missions developed as parts of the NASA Science Mission Directorate’s (SMD) Undergraduate Student Instrument Program (USIP). Those three satellites are being constructed as of this publication and will be delivered to perspective launchers by the end of August. LAICE satellite was constructed and is awaiting to be delivered to the launch in November 1st, 2018.Submission original under an indefinite embargo labeled 'Open Access'. Towards Robust Object Detection in Unseen Catheterization Laboratories
Deep-learning-based object detectors, while offering exceptional performance, are data-dependent and can suffer from generalization issues. In this thesis, we investigated deep neural networks for detecting people and medical instruments in the vision-based workflow analysis system inside Catheterization Laboratories (Cath Labs). The central problem explored in this thesis is the fact that the performance of the detector can degrade drastically if it is trained and tested on data from different Cath Labs. Our research aimed to investigate the underlying causes of this specific performance degradation and find solutions to mitigate this issue. We employed the YOLOv8 object detector and created datasets from clinical procedures recorded at Reinier de Graaf Hospital (RdGG) and Philips Best Campus, supplemented with publicly accessible images. An aggregated version of object detection metrics was created for multi-camera system evaluation. Through a series of experiments complemented by data visualization, we discovered that the performance degradation primarily stems from data distribution shifts in the feature space. Notably, the object detector trained on non-sensitive online images can generalize to unseen Cath Labs, outperforming the model trained on a procedure recording from a different Cath Lab. The detector trained on the online images achieved an [email protected] of 0.517 on the RdGG dataset. Furthermore, by switching to the most suitable camera for each object, the multi-camera system can further improve detection performance significantly. An aggregated 1-camera [email protected] of 0.679 is achieved for single-object classes on the RdGG dataset.Electrical Engineerin
Effects of Epichloë festucae fungal endophyte infection in strong creeping red fescue on abiotic and biotic stresses
Epichloë spp. are common naturally occurring fungal endophyte symbionts of many cool season grasses. Some endophyte-infected grasses have been confirmed to have enhanced abiotic and biotic stress resistance. Strong creeping red fescue (Festuca rubra ssp. rubra), an important cool-season turfgrass species, is often infected with E. festucae. The drought stress resistance of some endophyte-infected turfgrass species has been well studied, but no research has shown the effects of E. festucae on Festuca rubra ssp. rubra under drought stress or any turfgrass species under heat stress. It has been confirmed that endophyte-infected Festuca rubra ssp. rubra has increased disease resistance to dollar spot and red thread with unknown mechanism. A previous study compared the gene transcriptomes between endophyte-infected and endophyte-free Festuca rubra ssp. rubra and discovered a highly expressed fungal transcript encoding a small, basic, cysteine-rich protein that may be involved. This protein is similar to a Penicillium chrysogenum Thom antifungal protein (PAF) and an Aspergillus giganteus Wehmer antifungal protein (AFP). The goals of this thesis were to determine if endophyte infection had any effects on responses of Festuca rubra ssp. rubra to heat stress and/or drought stress and if the E. festucae antifungal protein had activity against the fungal pathogen Sclerotinia homoeocarpa F.T. cepip: context-dependent epigenomic weighting for prioritization of regulatory variants and disease-associated genes
abstract: It remains challenging to predict regulatory variants in particular tissues or cell types due to highly context-specific gene regulation. By connecting large-scale epigenomic profiles to expression quantitative trait loci (eQTLs) in a wide range of human tissues/cell types, we identify critical chromatin features that predict variant regulatory potential. We present cepip, a joint likelihood framework, for estimating a variant’s regulatory probability in a context-dependent manner. Our method exhibits significant GWAS signal enrichment and is superior to existing cell type-specific methods. Furthermore, using phenotypically relevant epigenomes to weight the GWAS single-nucleotide polymorphisms, we improve the statistical power of the gene-based association test. The electronic version of this article is the complete one and can be found online at: https://genomebiology.biomedcentral.com/articles/10.1186/s13059-017-1177-
Singular integrals of non-convolution type on product spaces
We study a new class of pseudo differential operators whose symbols satisfy
the differential inequality with a mixture of homogeneities. On the other hand,
by taking singular integral realization, it can be equivalently defined by
kernels carrying certain characteristic properties on product spaces. We prove
that these operators are bounded on L^p-spaces for 1<p<infinity. Moreover, they
form an algebra.Comment: We have corrected a number of errors and typos from the previous
versio
Regularity of multi-parameter Fourier integral operator
We study a family of Fourier integral operators, by allowing their symbols to
satisfy a multi-parameter differential inequality. We extend the sharp
L^p-result obtained by Seeger, Sogge and Stein to product spaces.Comment: some typos and errors are corrected from the previous versio
Fractional integration with singularity on the light-cone
We study a family of convolution operators whose symbols and kernels have
singularity on the light-cone in . First, we prove a desired
norm inequality which has been left open. Moreover, we
obtain certain sharp regularity results for the cone multiplier problem of
negative order.Comment: There is a gap found in the proof of Theorem One from the previous
version. We correct it in this new updat
