    A new strain fracture criterion for bulk metallic glasses under complex compressive loading

    The existing fracture criteria for bulk metallic glasses (BMGs) are described by the stress state on fracture plane. However, they are incapable to predict the fracture behavior of BMGs under compression loading because the nominal stress of most BMGs remains unchanged once materials yield. In this study, a new strain fracture criterion for bulk metallic glasses under complex compressive loading is proposed. The yield and plastic deformation before fracture under compression loading are described by the Drucker-Prager (D-P) criterion and plastic normality rule. Furthermore, due to the elastic perfect-plastic behavior of nominal stress for BMGs, we choose the nominal stress to describe the D-P yield criterion, which is well coincident with the experimental results. The two typical BMGs of Zr52.5Cu17.9Ni14.6Al10Ti5 (Vit105) and Zr41.2Ti13.8Cu12.5Ni10.0Be22.5 (Vit1) are used as examples to analyze the fracture behavior of BMGs under complex compressive loading. In this case, the plastic behavior of BMGs depends on the deformation modes, and the results can well describe the increasing tendency of plastic deformation to the higher pressure.     Going Beyond Counting First Authors in Author Co-citation Analysis

    The present study examines one of the fundamental aspects of author co-citation analysis (ACA) - the way co-citation counts are defined. Co-citation counting provides the data on which all subsequent statistical analyses and mappings are based, and we compare ACA results based on two different types of co-citation counting - the traditional type that only counts the first one among a cited work's authors on the one hand and a non-traditional type that takes into account the first 5 authors of a cited work on the other hand. Results indicate that the picture produced through this non-traditional author co-citation counting contains more coherent author groups and is therefore considerably clearer. However, this picture represents fewer specialties in the research field being studied than that produced through the traditional first-author co-citation counting when the same number of top-ranked authors is selected and analyzed.     “Variations on the Author” discusses two of Eduardo Coutinho’s recent films (Um Dia na Vida, from 2010, and Últimas Conversas, posthumously released in 2015) and their contribution to the general question of documentary authorship. The director’s filmography is characterized by a consistent yet self-effacing form of authorial self-inscription: Coutinho often features as an interviewer that rather than express opinions propels discourses; an interviewer that is good at listening. This mode of self-inscription characterizes him as an author who is not expressive but who is nonetheless markedly present on the screen. In Um Dia na Vida, however, Coutinho is completely absent form the image, while Últimas Conversas, on the contrary, includes a confessional prologue that moves the director from the margins to the center of his films. This article examines the ways in which these works stand out in the filmography of a director who offers new insights into the notion of cinematic authorship

    Appropriate Similarity Measures for Author Cocitation Analysis

    We provide a number of new insights into the methodological discussion about author cocitation analysis. We first argue that the use of the Pearson correlation for measuring the similarity between authors’ cocitation profiles is not very satisfactory. We then discuss what kind of similarity measures may be used as an alternative to the Pearson correlation. We consider three similarity measures in particular. One is the well-known cosine. The other two similarity measures have not been used before in the bibliometric literature.     Dislocation theory of the fracture criterion for anisotropic solids

    A dislocation theory of fracture criterion for the mixed dislocation emission and cleavage process in an anisotropic solid is developed in this paper. The complicated cases involving mixed-mode loading are considered here. The explicit formula for dislocations interaction with a semi-infinite crack is obtained. The governing equation for the critical condition of crack cleavage in an anisotropic solid after a number dislocation emissions is established. The effects of elastic anisotropy, crack geometry and load phase angle on the critical energy release rate and the total number of the emitted dislocations at the onset of cleavage are analysed in detail. The analyses revealed that the critical energy release rates can increase to one or two magnitudes larger than the surface energy because of the dislocation emission. It is also found elastic anisotropy and crystal orientation have significant effects on the critical energy release rates. The anisotropic values can be several times the isotropic value in one crack orientation. The values may be as much as 40% less than the isotropic value in another crack orientation and another anisotropy parameter. Then the theory is applied to a fee single crystal. An edge dislocation can emit from the crack tip along the most highly shear stressed slip plane. Crack cleavage can occur along the most highly stressed slip plane after a number of dislocation emissions. Calculation is carried out step by step. Each step we should judge by which slip system is the most highly shear stressed slip system and which slip system has the largest energy release rate. The calculation clearly shows that the crack orientation and the load phase angle have significant effects on the crystal brittle-ductile behaviours

    L-histidine decarboxylase decreases its own transcription through downregulation of ERK activity

    A poorly defined negative feedback loop decreases transcription of theL-histidine decarboxylase (HDC) gene. To help understand this regulation, we have studied the effect of HDC protein expression on HDC gene transcription in transfected AGS-B cells. Expression of the rat HDC protein inhibited HDC promoter activity in a dose-dependent fashion. The region of the HDC promoter mediating this inhibitory effect corresponded to a previously defined gastrin and extracellular signal-related kinase (ERK)-1 response element. Overexpression of the HDC protein reduced nuclear factor binding in this region. Experiments employing specific histamine receptor agonists indicated that the inhibitory effect was not dependent on histamine production, and studies with the HDC inhibitor α-fluoromethylhistidine revealed that inhibition was unrelated to enzyme activity. Instead, an enzymatically inactive region at the amino terminal of the HDC enzyme (residues 1–271) was shown to mediate inhibition. Fluorescent chimeras containing this domain were not targeted to the nucleus, arguing against specific inhibition of the HDC transcription machinery. Instead, we found that overexpression of HDC protein decreased ERK protein levels and ERK activity and that the inhibitory effect of HDC protein could be overcome by overexpression of ERK1. These data suggest a novel feedback-inhibitory role for amino terminal sequences of the HDC protei

    Dispelling the Myths Behind First-author Citation Counts

    We conducted a full-scale evaluative citation analysis study of scholars in the XML research field to explore just how different from each other author rankings resulting from different citation counting methods actually are, and to demonstrate the capability of emerging data and tools on the Web in supporting more realistic citation counting methods. Our results contest some common arguments for the continued use of first-author citation counts in the evaluation of scholars, such as high correlations between author rankings by first-author citation counts and other citation counting methods, and high costs of using more realistic citation counting methods that are not well-supported by the ISI databases. It is argued that increasingly available digital full text research papers make it possible for citation analysis studies to go beyond what the ISI databases have directly supported and to employ more sophisticated methods
