    Optimal multicarrier faster-than-Nyquist signaling under symbol-by-symbol detection

    We consider the multicarrier faster-than-Nyquist (MFTN) signaling under low complexity symbol-by-symbol detection, where the lattice structure and time-frequency spacing play key roles in determining the system performance. Specifically, the energy of intersymbol interference (ISI) and intercarrier interference (ICI) introduced by time-frequency packing is taken as a figure of merit. In this regard, we firstly prove the asymptotical equivalence of the hexagonal MFTN and conventional rectangular MFTN signaling systems when the time packing factor is small enough, and we also reveal the potential benefit of hexagonal MFTN with respect to conventional rectangular MFTN for moderate time-frequency spacing. Then, an optimal MFTN signaling scheme under the given signaling efficiency is proposed. By jointly optimizing the lattice structure and time-frequency spacing to minimize the interference energy, we show that the optimal time-frequency spacing can be accurately obtained with substantially reduced complexity than conventional exhaustive search scheme. Finally, we demonstrate that there is a good match between minimizing the interference energy and maximizing the achievable spectral efficiency, which is also considered to be an important figure for MFTN signaling system. Our theoretical analysis and numerical results validate that the proposed scheme outperforms conventional MFTN signaling system

    Microleon simingensis, Liang, Wang & Solovyev sp. nov. (Figs 4–5, 9–11, 13) Diagnosis. The new species is very similar to the congeners, but can be distinguished from other species of the genus Microleon by the following combination of characters: wider saccular processes, juxta without a pair of spines dorsally, aedeagus simple, without a sclerotized band apically. Description. Adult (Figs 4, 13). Male and female. Forewing length 5–7 mm. Antennae filiform, with brownbeige scales. Vertex covered densely with cream-brown hairs. Labial palpus pale yellow, about 2–3 times as long as diameter of eyes, upward curved. Thorax with an intermixture of orange-brown scales. Ground colour of thorax orange brown. Forewing pattern not distinct, the species can be recognized by the presence of pale, orange fields near apex, tornus and base. Wing venation: forewing with R 2, R 3 and R 4 stalked, R 3 +R 4 branching from near the base of R 2, R 5 arising from apical angle of discal cell, M 1 originate from middle of outer margin of discal cell. Hindwing grayish brown, Rs and M 1 stalked basally branching from Sc+R 1, veins M 3 and CuA 1 rising from lower angle of the cell. Male genitalia (Figs 9, 10). Uncus long tongue-shaped, with long hairs. Gnathos well-developed, T-shaped apically. Valvae elongated, costal margin strongly sclerotized, outer margin oblique. Saccular processes long and wide, each with two apically acute arms, the right dorsal arm distinctly longer than the left one. Juxta sclerotized. Aedeagus simple, slightly curved at base. Female genitalia (Fig. 11). Ovipositor lobes flattened, nearly oval. Apophysis anterioris approximately three times longer than apophysis posterioris. Ductus bursae extremely long, slender, somewhat coiled, sclerotized basally. Corpus bursae with a gourd-shaped signum. Type materials. Holotype (in SCAU): &male;, Siming Mountain, Ningbo City, Zhengjiang Province, China, N27°27′33.61″ E121°08′55.95″, 02-VII-2016, leg. Houshuai Wang.     Extended Sleeve Lobectomy is an Alternative For Centrally Located Lung Cancer With Superior Short- and Long- Term Outcomes

    Objectives Extended sleeve lobectomy (ESL) is a feasible alternative to pneumonectomy; however, the survival benefit is unclear and preoperative selection of potential candidates for ESL remains a problem. Methods ESL was performed on selected candidates with double sleeve lobectomy for more than one lobe (e.g. Left upper lobe and S6 segment resection). Three-dimensional (3-D) reconstruction was routinely validated. Patients were candidates for ESL if the predicted distal stump length was &gt;6 mm and the pulmonary vein of the remaining segments was not invaded. Results Of the 1809 patients with centrally located lung cancer for surgical resection, 86 patients with tumors invading more than one lobe were enrolled in the study. After evaluation by 3-D reconstruction, 22 of 23 (95.7%) selected candidates underwent ESL, and 63 patients were deemed unsuitable for ESL and underwent pneumonectomy (43 cases) or thoracic exploration (20 cases). Surgical outcomes between the ESL and pneumonectomy groups were similar in terms of complications, blood loss and surgical duration, but the 6-minute walking distance was significantly improved in the ESL group (371±111m, 191±55 m, p&lt;0.001). The mean FEV1 was 1.6±0.3L at the 1-year follow up examination in the ESL group. In the survival analysis, no difference was observed between the ESL and pneumonectomy groups in terms of 3-year overall survival (85% vs. 89%, respectively; p= 0.626) and 3-year disease-free survival (75% vs. 76%, respectively; p=0.625). Conclusions ESL is a feasible and superior surgical procedure in terms of its short-term and long-term outcomes, and we suggest 3-D reconstruction to identify candidates for ESL
