Wang Meng and contemporary Chinese literature: the vicissitudes of a committed writer

    No full text
This thesis examines the way Wang Meng has developed as a writer from the 1950s to the 1990s in the context of New China's political and literary background. It looks at the compromises he was forced to make between his political beliefs in the Communist Party and his chosen role as a professional writer. After his disastrous early foray into what was deemed to be unacceptable political criticism with The Young Newcomer in the Organisation Department in the 1950s, when the opportunity came to start publishing again in the late 1970s he was boldly innovative in style, helping to transform New Period literature, but conservative in content, sticking to politically acceptable topics. It was only with Hard Porridge in 1989 that he ventured again, and very successfully, into political comment. There is no outstanding leading writer in contemporary China, but Wang Meng is a leading contender for the title

Ktētōr and Synthesis: Epigrams, Miniatures, and Authorship in the Leo Bible

Thesis (Master's)--University of Washington, 2014The Leo Bible (Rome, Vat. Reg. Gr. 1) is an illuminated Old Testament produced in Byzantium during the mid-tenth century. Presented as a gift to a monastery of St. Nicholas by Leo Sakellarios, a court eunuch and palace treasurer, the Bible is the only surviving manuscript of its kind from Byzantium. Known for its luxurious epigrams and miniatures, the Leo Bible's classicizing miniatures are frequently cited as exemplars of tenth-century Byzantine art, although the manuscript is rarely considered as whole. This study takes a new approach to the Leo Bible, focusing on the manuscript as a work of visual and poetic exegesis, in which word and image work together to frame the Old Testament in a Christian context. Beyond its exegetical nature, the Leo Bible also demonstrates a marked interest in the theme of authorship. By considering Byzantine notions of authorship in conjunction with the Bible's visual and epigrammatic program, this study offers new insights into the concept of patronage in Byzantium and the means by which patrons constructed their image and legacy through their commissions. In the case of the Leo Bible, this study will address how Leo Sakellarios is understood to be the author of the manuscript and its exegetical commentary, and how this act of authorship is reflected in the Bible's visual and poetic programs

Leo Katz as an author of children’s books. A failed attempt?

    No full text

Integrated Communication and Navigation Based on LEO Satellite Networks: A Survey

    No full text
Advancements in communication, manufacturing, and launch technologies have significantly accelerated the development of Low-Earth orbit (LEO) satellite communication constellations. Simultaneously, the rapid expansion of LEO satellite platforms presents new opportunities for navigation enhancements and substantial benefits for internet of things (IoT) applications. This survey highlights the latest advancements in the integrated communication and navigation (ICAN) technologies, emphasizing key research issues. Specifically, we discuss the motivation and feasibility of integrating communication and navigation on LEO satellite platforms, analyzing various LEO-based navigation paradigms while assessing their respective advantages and limitations. We further explore the mutual promotion of navigation and communication under the ICAN paradigm and discuss waveform design, analyzing the characteristics of different waveform design approaches. Finally, we highlight the unique challenges and identify open research topics within the ICAN framework for future exploration
