Wang Shuo and the commercialisation of contemporary Chinese culture

    No full text
This thesis examines the commercialisation of Chinese culture that has taken place over the past twenty years in mainland China. It explores the contribution of Wang Shuo, a cultural figure who straddles different fields of culture, moving from literature to the ultimate mass culture medium of television, this study plots Wang Shuo' s development from educational failure, to business failure, to fiction writer, film & TV editor, film director and cultural critic and analyst. His stories, films, TV series and articles have caused shock-waves throughout national cultural circles as he has transformed the terms of the debate from academic discourse to a validation of the role of the market in the culture field. Although Wang Shuo has not been labelled as a dissident, his approach to the culture market has had a more subversive effect on official ideology that those overt dissidents who have had to live in exile or have been imprisoned. He has utilised the language of official ideology to satirise the authorities, turning the ideology and its supporters into figures of fun. Yet his own goals have been strictly personal and economic ones. The authorities recognize the value of Wang Shuo's work in the cultural market but at the same time distrust his works and place him under strict censorship. Examining the way Wang Shuo and people surround him have succeeded in different fields of cultural achievement is a mirror to understanding the process of the transformation of contemporary Chinese culture from a socialist state-controlled culture to a market-oriented mass culture industry

Real-time Hybrid Locomotion Mode Recognition for Lower-limb Wearable Robots

    No full text
Real-time recognition of locomotion-related activities is a fundamental skill that the controller of lower-limb wearable robots should possess. Subject-specific training and reliance on electromyographic interfaces are the main limitations of existing approaches. This study presents a novel methodology for real-time locomotion mode recognition of locomotion-related activities in lower-limb wearable robotics. A hybrid classifier can distinguish among seven locomotion-related activities. First, a time-based approach classifies between static and dynamical states based on gait kinematics data. Second, an event-based fuzzy logic method triggered by foot pressure sensors operates in a subject-independent fashion on a minimal set of relevant biomechanical features to classify among dynamical modes. The locomotion mode recognition algorithm is implemented on the controller of a portable powered orthosis for hip assistance. An experimental protocol is designed to evaluate the controller performance in an out-of-lab scenario without the need for a subject-specific training. Experiments are conducted on six healthy volunteers performing locomotion-related activities at slow, normal, and fast speeds under the zero-torque and assistive mode of the orthosis. The overall accuracy rate of the controller is 99.4% over more than 10,000 steps, including seamless transitions between different modes. The experimental results show a successful subject-independent performance of the controller for wearable robots assisting locomotion-related activities

The Promise of Beijing: Evaluating the Impact of the 2008 Olympic Games on Air Quality

    No full text
To prepare for the 2008 Olympic Games, China adopted a number of radical measures to improve air quality. Using officially reported air pollution index (API) from 2000 to 2009, we show that these measures improved the API of Beijing during and after the Games, but 60% of the effect faded away by the end of October 2009. Since the credibility of API data has been questioned, an objective and indirect measure of air quality at a high spatial resolution – aerosol optimal depth (AOD), derived using the data from the NASA satellites – was analyzed and compared with the API trend. The analysis confirms that the improvement was real but temporary and most improvement was attributable to plant closure and traffic control. Our results suggest that it is possible to achieve real environmental improvement in an authoritarian regime but the magnitude of the effect and how long it lasts depend on the political motivation behind the policy interventions.

A realtime locomotion mode recognition method for an active pelvis orthosis

    No full text
This paper presents a realtime locomotion mode recognition method for an active pelvis orthosis. Five locomotion modes, including sitting, standing still, level-ground walking, ascending stairs, and descending stairs, are taken into consideration. The recognition is performed with locomotion information measured by the onboard hip angle sensors and the pressure insoles. These five modes are firstly divided into static modes and dynamic modes, and the two kinds are classified by monitoring the variation of the relative hip angles of the two legs within a pre-defined period. Static states are further classified into sitting and standing still based on the absolute hip angle. As for dynamic modes, a fuzzy-logic based method is proposed for the recognition. Two event-based locomotion features, including the hip joint angle at the first foot-strike and the center of foot pressure at the first foot-strike are used to calculate the membership of different modes based on the membership function, and the mode with the maximal membership is selected as the target mode. Experimental results with three subjects achieve an average recognition accuracy of 99.87% and average recognition delay of 18.12% of one gait cycle

A New Collaborative Filtering Recommendation Approach Based on Naive Bayesian Method

    No full text
Recommendation is a popular and hot problem in e-commerce. Recommendation systems are realized in many ways such as content-based recommendation, collaborative filtering recommendation, and hybrid approach recommendation. In this article, a new collaborative filtering recommendation algorithm based on naive Bayesian method is proposed. Unlike original naive Bayesian method, the new algorithm can be applied to instances where conditional independence assumption is not obeyed strictly. According to our experiment, the new recommendation algorithm has a better performance than many existing algorithms including the popular k-NN algorithm used by Amazon.com especially at long length recommendation.Computer Science, Artificial IntelligenceComputer Science, Theory & MethodsEICPCI-S(ISTP)

Fuzzy-logic-based hybrid locomotion mode classification for an active pelvis orthosis: Preliminary results

    No full text
In this paper, we present a fuzzy-logic-based hybrid locomotion mode classification method for an active pelvis orthosis. Locomotion information measured by the onboard hip joint angle sensors and the pressure insoles is used to classify five locomotion modes, including two static modes (sitting, standing still), and three dynamic modes (level-ground walking, ascending stairs, and descending stairs). The proposed method classifies these two kinds of modes first by monitoring the variation of the relative hip joint angle between the two legs within a specific period. Static states are then classified by the time-based absolute hip joint angle. As for dynamic modes, a fuzzy-logic based method is proposed for the classification. Preliminary experimental results with three able-bodied subjects achieve an off-line classification accuracy higher than 99.49%

Development of a 2D Mechanical Resonant Push-Pull Scanning Endoscope

    No full text
Thesis (Ph.D.)--University of Washington, 2015In recent years, miniature scanner technologies, including micro-electro-mechanical system (MEMS) scanners, have started to appear on the market. Most miniature scanner technologies utilize MEMS scanner mirrors. However, this approach has many limitations. In the meanwhile, a competing technology called fiber optic resonant scanner (FORS) has also been developed in order to obtain forward image. An off-the-shelf piezoelectric actuator at the base to create transverse vibrations of a resonating optical fiber has shown to be an effective method for generating 1D and 2D laser line scans. We previously developed a 2D micro image display device that utilized MEMS-based waveguide to replace the optical fiber, which can potentially overcome the size limitations of mirror-based display. In this research, an improved waveguide scanner system using a fully integrated MEMS-based push-pull actuator is presented. This prototype features monolithic integration of the waveguide, actuator, and light source, and removes the dependence on external actuators used by the previous design. The transmission efficiency is low and cantilever is slightly under tensile stress due to inherent imperfection in the process imperfection and tooling in fabrication. Nevertheless, 2D light scanning pattern is successfully demonstrated using 1D push-pull actuation

Energy-Efficient Braking Torque Control of Robotic Transtibial Prosthesis

    No full text
The ankle joint usually rotates passively during early and middle stance due to the locomotion of human body. Based on this passive dynamics of human locomotion, we develop an energy-efficient braking torque controller for a robotic transtibial prosthesis. The controller first generates motor current/torque from human locomotion instead of the battery energy, and then controls the current/torque with alternating current sensing and voltage-controlled-resistor. On the basis of the low-level motor torque controller, we then propose the impedance model that determines the desired joint torque according to the joint angle and joint velocity, the prosthesis model that converts the desired ankle joint torque to desired motor torque, and the friction model that estimates the friction torque and compensates the joint torque. Step response and frequency response show that the low-level controller can reach the desired torque value within 0.07 s, and has a -3 dB bandwidth of 25.2 Hz. Experiments of level-ground treadmill walking with three amputees show that the prosthesis with the proposed controller can effectively mimic the normal ankle performance and bring the amputees a natural gait pattern with low power consumption.National Program for Support of Top-notch Young Professionals; National Natural Science Foundation of China [61005082, 61020106005, 61533001]; Beijing Disabled Persons' Federation; Beijing Nova Program [Z141101001814001]; Beijing Municipal Science and Technology Project [Z151100003715001, Z151100000915073]SCI(E)ARTICLE1149-1602
